I really don't know at this point. You see, none of the players remember their pasts as angels, and they have only recently learned that they have been subconsciously following the trail of a powerful "renegade" angel. Most RPGs (In Nomine included) have a lot of background material, more than is really practical to use in a single game. Pick a particular aspect of the In Nomine universe, such as the conflict between an Archangel and his opposed demon Prince. Focus on that for your first few sessions. Once that starts to get stale, you can add other stuff. 2) Steal from the best. Don't be afraid to plagarize; your players aren't likely to complain unless you are *too* blatant. RPGs aren't exactly high art. Stories that seem trite or stereotyped in other mediums can make for exciting games. There are plenty of good adventure ideas on the various INC pages (the http address for mine is in my sigfile below). 3) Develop the PCs. Do your best to draw out information from the players about their characters. Flashbacks and dreams are a good in game methods for doing this. A simple question can help, like: "Describe your best day and your worst day" or "What would you do with a million dollars?" Do *not* expect the characters to start off completely fleshed out; rather, encourage your players to develop them as the game goes along. 4) Make things personal. Once you know stuff about the PCs, use it! I try to make a point of having at least one aspect of every adventure focus on the background of at least one of the PCs. The more you tie your adventures to your player characters, the more they will be interested in its outcome. 5) Let your game grow. Keep records of the NPCs that seem to be the most interesting, and reuse them. Look for loose plot thread and build new adventures on them. Gradually fill in the parts of your gaming world that seem to need detail. Work *with* your players on this; pay attention to the sorts of things they like and try to do that again. Anyway, I hope some of those ideas are helpful. Good luck with your game. Canon alert: There will be *no*, and I repeat, *no* lengthy collection of Word-bound NPCs in the IN NOMINE Canon. For one main reason so good, that it needs no supporting other reasons: If we populated the canonical game world with Word-bound NPCs, all the good words will get 'taken' and the PCs will have nothing to aspire to. The Word-bound that we add are just a few frills or what's necessary for a storyline. Canon mode off. >The npc's on the list seem cool, especially just lately, but it seems like >they all have words! Almost as if giving an npc a word was mandatory... I've noticed this trend, too. I just skim past them, now. No disrespect meaning to the work people put in them, but after a while many of them (certainly not all) were getting rather repititious. Many are just cookie-cutter Word-bound, more of an exercise (and exercise isn't a Bad Thing) in the mechanics of Resonances, Attunements, and Rites than they were *characters*. Yes, some were developed characters with a history and personality and quirks and involvements and motives. Too many others have been generic and bland, IMO. Take a close look at Gabriel for an idea of what I consider a good write-up on a Word-bound. If Gabriel didn't exist in the IN NOMINE world, and someone posted an 'Angel of Fire' to the list, we would have seen a Resonance for burning and heat and a list of Choir Attunements dealing with setting and putting out fires. Boring (IMO). Instead of that, Gabriel has a Word with a metaphorical depth to it. Her Choir attunements strike out new territory with regard to what they do (rather than a set of mechanistic advantages). And, she, herself, has *character* with a *history* with *conflict*. >OTOH, it also seems like a GM might want intermediaries between an archangel >and the players, or a way to further subdivide the servants of an archangel. It might be good for a GM to have somewhat of a list of Word-bound NPCs whom the PCs might meet. But I would not give the whole list to the PCs and would only use these Word-bound NPCs as needed. This way, if a player wants to be the Angel of Skateboarding, I don't say, "Sorry, already got one, you just never met her -- so go ahead and pick some other Word." Rather, I'd dispose of my NPC Angel of Skateboarding and say, "What do you plan to do in order to get that Word?" It spends much of its time in quiet contemplation, resting in its favored Vessel, a stone gargoyle perched at a useful vantage point on the tallest building in the city. At times, it sends aspects of itself out in pigeons to watch over other areas of the city. Pigeons are Elizur's second most common vessel; it automatically inhabits pigeons that land on its gargoyle vessel before they do something "unpleasant". Elizur is rather withdrawn, rarely contacting the other Celestials of the city unless there is a need. At times it will venture forth in its gargoyle vessel to do the heavy work that is required of it. This means climbing down at night, or if time is short, flying with the Corporeal Song of Motion. The razor sharp claws of the gargoyle tend to put a quick end to any battles Elizur finds itself involved in. Elizur has recently notice a pattern to construction in the city. It suspects there is a deeper signifigance to the arrangements of several new building that have been built in the last few months. It feels uncomfortable, but has no real proof of diabolical influence, and is not certain how to learn more. Elizur may soon be forced from its shell to seek aid in this matter. Once she find one, she calls in one of the triads of Dominic to exam the situation in greater detail; Madian herself does not have the authority to act on her discoveries. Madian's dearest wish is to be promoted to membership in a triad. Unfortunately, every triad must have both a Cherub and Seraphim, and there are simply not enough openings for all the Servitors of Judgment. She understandably has difficulty making friends, both because she moves so much and because the angels that she meets are paranoid she will find some error in them. Hi all, 'Tis I, the Psychedelic Goblin, back after an extended work placement for Oxford University Press. Anyway, here's the write-up for Nergal, Demon Prince of Sickness that I promised a while back. It's only the first draft, but let me know what you think. Just be constructive. Note that Nergal IS a real world demon, NOT just the creation of Games Workshop. cheers - Psygoblin NERGAL PRINCE OF SICKNESS The world is diseased - riddled with cancer Nergal is a vast, powerful and insidious Prince, a Djinn who usually manifests as a short, corpulent gentleman with spindly limbs and a cheerful demeanour. In fact, he would appear quite grandfatherly were it not for his numerous weeping sores... Patient, good tempered and friendly, he is unfailingly polite and very 'physical' in his behaviour, patting people heartily on the back, shaking hands vigorously etc. He even likes to leave a little of himself with those he meets... Responsible for diseases such as the Bubonic Plague, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Leprosy (an old favourite for which he has a soft spot, or two, or three...), and more recently Aids (his 'masterpiece'), he also has such favoured pets as Influenza and the Common Cold. He regards himself as the great equaliser, striking down old and young, strong and weak. Even the greatest warrior can be dealt a deadly blow against which he has no defence, but he prefers that diseases take their time corrupting the body, driving the victim into depression, despair, lethargy and isolation. He likes the pain and misery to last. His demons are sent to earth to spread sickness, and despite the valiant attempts by humanity to create new cures, Nergal is relentless in his onslaught. It is due to his constant drive to create new, more hardy diseases and viruses that he is constantly engaged, and this has earned him the nickname 'He Who Does Not Return Phone Calls'. A long standing friend of Baal, Saminga and Asmodeus, Nergal is so well respected and trusted (if such a thing can ever be said of any Demon Prince) that Asmodeus granted him the honorary title of 'Chief of the Secret Police' (which sounds impressive but grants no real authority). DISSONANCE It is dissonant for Nergal's demons to do or encourage anything that prevents, slows or inhibits the spread of disease. (For example, they must never clean anything or encourage cleanliness in a mortal etc.). BAND ATTUNEMENTS Balseraphs Devious liars all, Nergal's Balseraph can cover the very nature of sickness with a cunning lie. They can use their resonance to make people suffering from a disease or virus actually feel better as their condition worsens, causing them to reject and refuse any and all treatment. Djinn As the corruption of sickness spreads from victim to victim, so does the influence of Nergal's Djinn. They may attune themselves to anyone that one of their attuned patterns directly infects for as long as the illness lasts, and these secondary attunements don't count against their total possible attunements. Calabim Sickness corrupts and destroys like cancer, and while its impact may take time to ripen, the results can be just as final. A Calabite servitor of Nergal has their force of Entropy greatly increased, allowing them to afflict a target with a wasting disease. Any target successfully hit by their Entropic assault begins to waste, losing 2 Body hits per day thereafter. This wasting may only be treated with the Song of Healing. Lilim Those who fail to fulfil a Geas on behalf of a Lilim of Nergal also gain a proportionately nasty disease, in addition to any punishment the Lilim herself metes out. Few Lilim follow Nergal. Shedim The sick are weakened, frail and susceptible. Shedim of Nergal add their Corporeal Forces to any attempts to possess the sick, and automatically infect their next host with whatever disease their lost host was suffering from. Habbalah Sickness is fear. Nergal's Habbalah can make their victims believe they are sickened and diseased for a period equal to the Habbalah's Corporeal Forces in rounds. Impudites The sick are struggling, their defences are low. Impudites of Nergal add their Corporeal Forces when using their Resonance on a victim - to Charm or to Steal Essence - if the victim is sick. SERVITOR ATTUNEMENTS Infect This attunement allows the demon to infect a victim with any disease or virus of their choice for the cost of 1 Essence. They generate no Dissonance if anyone they infect dies as a result of the disease. All servitors of Nergal must purchase this attunement when generated. Miasma For the cost of 1 Essence the demon can surround themselves in a stinking cloud of diseased pestilence. The radius of the cloud is equal to the demons Body in yards. All within the cloud (except for servitors of Nergal) must make Tough (-2) Strength rolls or hack, cough and vomit for a number of rounds equal to their failed check digit. This effectively incapacitates them. DISTINCTIONS Pox-Ridden Squire Disease pulses with a life all of its own. This distinction grants the demon the ability to detect the presence of all diseases and viral infections (within 20 yds), as well as their current stage of development. Leprous Knight A healthy skin, a rotten core. This distinction grants the demon the ability to mask the effects of a disease or virus, removing all outward signs of infection for 24 hours. Plague Baron Treatment doesn't always work... This distinction grants the demon the ability to completely negate the benefits of a weeks worth of medical treatment for the cost of 1 Essence. That's about as low as I'd want to go, I think. - ---Walter ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 May 1997 17:34:03 -0500 (CDT) From: rogue@ez-net.com (RogueLdr) Subject: IN> Re: in_nomine-digest V1 #148 > > >Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 12:00:13 -0700 >From: Hollis McCray >Subject: IN> DOMINIC.NET > >Let's play a joke on DOMINIC.NET. Rather, I'd > dispose of my NPC Angel of Skateboarding and say, "What do you plan to do in > order to get that Word?" I always pictured Words as not being exclusive. I thought that a given Word could be awarded to several Angels at once, all of whom would serve that Word (not necessarily together of course). If and when the Word became worthy of Archangel status, those with the Word would have more competition to receive the award. If one of these Worded angels became an Archangel, they would then either be able to transfer their loyalties to following the new archangel (with permission from the original AA and some political maneuvering) or could remain with their old AA and still support the new AAs Word. In this way, simply because someone else has the Word you want doesn't mean you can't get it as well, it just means that you'll have to work that much harder to get it. In the game I'm running at the moment, I have the characters in a small town of 60,000, yet there are close to two-dozen celestials in this town. Now to me that seems huge, but there is a reason for it. Strange things are happening in this town, and lots of people on both sides want to know why. Likewise, even in a larger town where nothing of (celestial) interest is happening, there may be no celestials (or only one or two) other than the PCs.
