"Nevertheless, Java is the future of computing, and I'll be damned if I'm going to give God a strategic technology advantage!" "Satan, what if I told you I could kill off Java with a single word?" "Interesting. Tell me more." "Wait a minute. What's in it for me?" "I promise I won't turn you into Larry Ellison's bidet right this second." "Okay, that works for me. Here's the word...disable." "Disable what?" "Disable Java support in Internet Explorer." "You mean Microsoft's web browser won't run Java anymore?" "That's right, brimstone breath. You want to run Java, give Netscape 50 bucks per seat and pray that IBM doesn't buy the company to merge Communicator with Lotus Notes." "The Department of Justice will..." "Will what? Punish me because I won't support a product my enemies want to use to destroy my company? Chevrolet dealers don't have to sell Fords. Pepsi's restaurants don't have to offer Coke. Why does Microsoft have to support Java?" "It's an industry standard..." "It's an industry hallucination." "There will be a public outcry..." "From who? Network managers? MIS? The CIO? They're up to their nosehairs in Cobol getting ready for January 1, 2000. To them, Java is still a cute word for coffee." "What about all those spiffy applets on thousands of web sites?" "Microsoft owns 100 percent of the Apple and Windows preload market for browsers, and our overall share has gone from zero to half in two years. It's a safe bet most people will soon use IE for web access. If they come to a site that doesn't work because of Java, they'll simply jump to the next one. Trust me, developers will switch to ActiveX faster than you can say 'Playstation.'" "What about other platforms..." "Like Intel has competition?" "Interactive TV..." "We call it WebTV in Redmond." "Venture capitalists have invested billions..." "To get a date with Kim Polese." "Sun will write a plug-in..." "Not without the hidden APIs." "Of all my minions, you are my very favorite, Bill. You may stay." "Thanks, Satan. Now, about that Exchange license agreement..." - -- Casca, Seraph of Archives (bertishg@db.erau.edu) "...I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying...At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke." -- Isaiah 6:2,4 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 17:05:02 +0000 From: Nathaniel Eliot Subject: Re: IN> Malakim Humor > > [ObTwink: Yes, I know Spock would be Elohim, not Malakim. Data - Seraph of Lightning (though there were probably times he lied, but I'll ignore those on the grounds that he fits the stereotype beautifully). Q - Habbalah of Kobal. Ensign - Severly dissonant Kyriotate of Technology. By Next Generation, has fallen, joing the increasingly demonic crew. (Can you tell which Gen I lost respect for Trek at?) Scotty - Cherub of Technology, attuned to the ship (esp the warp core and transporters). Senschal of the Starship Enterprise. I'd say that Geordi was another vessel of his, but Jordi just ain't as cool... Bones - Mercurian of Creation in Service to Technology. Luxana Troy (Diana's mother) - Impudite of Lust. Wesley Crusher - Hellspawn. Any guesses for Sulu, Chekov, and other original characters? Nathaniel Eliot temujin9@mci2000.com Changing addresses faster than an Ophanite with a house mover! I recently found the webpage of the guy who did the original "Christian Mods for IN" article. I remember a number of people arguing his intent, saying he was a fanatic etc. Well, having checked out his page, I can safely say that if there where more people like him out there, we gamers wouldn't get half as much flack about "satanic gaming" as we do. There an article on his views about gaming on the page, in which he says; "Many people attack role-playing games, and say they are satanic, or cause suicides, or weaken your spirit, or become a power trip, or glorify and encourage violence, etc. etc. etc. I've heard all of the arguments. And none of them hold up to critical thinking. All of them have flawed logic. If you condemn Role Playing games, then you must, by logic, condemn all plays, movies, television, radio-plays, skits, music videos, etc. weather they be Christian or not, and some witch hunters do indeed throw out the baby with the bath water." He goes on to address all the guff we hear about suicide, satanism and violence and debunks it all in a quiet and rational manner. Hardly the tone of a fanatic. Nowhere in the mods article does he call Derek a balseraph. Instead, he seperates Derek from the authorship of the bits of the game he disagrees with by stating that "a balseraph wrote the description of the choirs". The guy is just a gamer, with strong beliefs, tweaking the game as we all have to his own taste. What's wrong with that? If the GM wants to do something to make the game better, then the GM should do it. I'd put in little consequences, though -- like forgetting that one shouldn't hit humans, other Malakim considering her a jinx, etc. [Still dealing with non-urgent email from the 400 messages from vacation] - --emccoy@nh.ultranet.com // arcangel@io.com In Nomine Line Editor GURPS, Roleplayers, In Nomine stuff; Art: http://www.io.com/~arcangel/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 19:31:23 -0500 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Star Trek In Nomine (Re: IN> Malakim Humor) At 12:40 PM +0000 1/12/98, Kevin Walsh wrote: >Now we have to place every other Star Trek character's choir.
