Munchkin Coins

Given how treasure-obsessed munchkins are, it's a wonder we waited this long . . .

Munchkin Coins are special bits of promo goodness. Not only are they durable and shiny, the rules that govern their use change from month to month.

The first Munchkin Coin was the 2008 Munchkin Silver Piece. We released a new Silver Piece each year after that, through 2014, as well as a special Christmas variant set, a blue version for Game Trade Magazine in 2010, and a Gold Piece for Munchkin Quest.

All of these rules apply to any Munchkin game, and may be activated at any time (except where noted differently). The effect of each rule is limited to the owner of the coin, unless otherwise noted. Each Coin may only be activated once, and only one Coin is allowed per player.

Let us restate that for emphasis:

Each player may only have a single coin per game, and a single coin effect per game, unless stated otherwise.

2008 Munchkin Silver Piece

January 2008

Flip the Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat. On heads (the Munchkin face image), the bonus from any Headgear is doubled for the duration of the combat. On tails (the Boots of Butt-Kicking image), the bonus from any Footgear is turned into a penalty for the duration of the combat.

February 2008

Draw two Door cards and two Treasure cards. Arrange them so that each Door card touches a Treasure card on both its long edge and its short edge. Drop the Coin from a distance of at least 12" onto the cards. If the Coin lands on a card, you take that card. If the Coin lands on heads (the Munchkin face image), the card is considered drawn face up – if it's a monster, trap, or curse, you must deal with it! If the Coin lands on tails (the Boots of Butt-Kicking image), the card is considered to have been drawn face down.

March 2008

Whenever a player attempts to steal one of your Items, whether as a Class ability or super power, you may secretly hide the coin in one of your hands. The player must guess which hand is holding the Coin. If he guesses correctly, he may proceed as usual. If he guesses wrong, then he cannot steal from you this turn, but suffers no other penalties.

April 2008

Stick the Silver Piece to your forehead, without the aid of gum, glue, or tape. You may lean your head back, but you only have one attempt. For as long as the Silver Piece stays, you are immune to Traps and Curses.

May 2008

Flip the Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat. On heads (the Munchkin face image), the bonus from any Headgear is turned into a penalty for the duration of the combat. On tails (the Boots of Butt-Kicking image), the bonus from any Footgear is doubled for the duration of the combat.

June 2008

Place the Silver Piece over one eye, and hold it in place without using your hands, gum, glue, tape, or any other adhesive. As long as the Silver Piece stays over your eye (or the end of your turn, whichever comes first), you have the Monocle of Sight. Whenever you draw a single face-down Door, you may draw two, and decide which you'd like to use. The other is replaced on the top of the deck.

July 2008

During any combat, you may activate the Munchkin Silver Piece to add two Monsters to a combat, but you must give the Silver Piece to the Munchkin whom you're pummeling. You may draw two Door cards to replace the Monsters.

Each Silver Piece may only be used once per game. You may not use the Silver Piece to add Monsters to your own combat.

August 2008

At any time except in combat, activate the Munchkin Silver Piece and place it on the back of your hand. While it remains, any single item requiring hands is worth an additional +2 bonus. No adhesive of any kind may be used. If the item is lost, the effect ends.

Bonus Labor Day Weekend Rule!

Make Someone Else Do The Work For You

This rule is only valid during the Labor Day weekend (August 29 – September 1) .

Give the Munchkin Silver Piece to another player. That player must fight the monster you are currently fighting. If that player wins, he gets the level, but you get any and all treasure.

September 2008

Activate the Munchkin Silver Piece, and discard your current Class, replacing it with any Class, from any Munchkin game. If you chose a Class from the current game, reshuffle the entire Door deck (including discards).

October 2008: Cursed Piece Of Eight

Flip the Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat. On heads (the Munchkin face image), the coin is worth a bonus of +8 to your level for the duration of the combat. On tails (the Boots of Butt-Kicking image), the coin is a penalty of -8 to your level for the duration of the combat. But only for Munchkin Booty games; for all others it's just +/-2.

Halloween 2008: Paying Off The Ferryman

Special Bonus Halloween Silver Piece Rule!

This rule is only valid from October 31 through Novemeber 2, 2008.

Put one Munchkin Silver Piece over each eye when you are killed. If both coins remain in place until play returns to you, your body is not looted.

This rule is an explicit exception to the "single coin per game, and single coin effect per game" rule.

November 2008: Coining A Card

Activate the Munchkin Silver Piece and place it on a card in play. You have now "coined" that card. As long as the Silver Piece remains on the card, no other player may use it, or any other card with the same title. Any other cards are immediately discarded. The Silver Piece is removed when the card is discarded.

Black Thursday Weekend: Valuable Coupon

This rule is only valid for Black Thursday weekend (November 27-30).

Activate the Munchkin Silver Piece to double the gold piece value of any one item.

December 2008: Shiny Distractions

Activate the Munchkin Silver Piece to bribe a monster to immediately leave a combat. No levels are gained, nor is any treasure left behind. If the combat involves multiple monsters, only one is affected.

Bonus Rule! During a game of Munchkin Quest, activate the Munchkin Silver Piece to remove a "Looted Out" counter.

Christmas 2008: Give A Gift; Get A Level

This rule is only valid during Christmas (December 23-26).

Give the Munchkin Silver Piece to another player. The Munchkin Silver Piece now belongs to that player; you don't get it back. You may go up a level. This may not be the winning level, and you may not gain more than one level from Silver Pieces during this game – multiple levels through the use of multiple Silver Pieces are not allowed.

2009 Munchkin Silver Piece

January 2009

This rule applies only to the Munchkin 2009 Silver Piece. If you have a Munchkin 2008 Silver Piece, use the January 2008 rule! You may only use one coin in a game, even if you have both the 2008 and 2009 coins.

Flip the Munchkin 2009 Silver Piece during any combat. On heads (the Munchkin face), treat your character's base level as 9 for the duration of this combat. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), treat your character's base level as 2 for the duration of this combat.

Bonus Munchkin 2009 Silver Piece Rule For ChattaCon!

This rule is only valid from January 23 through January 25, 2009. You do not have to be attending ChattaCon to use this rule, although Guest of Honor Steve Jackson will have plenty of Munchkin 2009 Silver Pieces to hand out if you are!

Flip the Munchkin 2009 Silver Piece during any combat. On heads (the Munchkin face), draw Treasure cards until you are holding 9 cards in your hand. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), play or discard until you have 2 cards in your hand. If you flip tails when you already have 2 or fewer cards, you must play or discard your entire hand! This effect lasts until the end of combat; your end-of-turn maximum hand size is unchanged.

February 2009

Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece at the start of the game. On heads (the Munchkin head), you may declare yourself the helper in a combat where the munchkin requires help. Draw a face-down Treasure if you win the combat, but collect no other reward (except a level, if you are an Elf – and yes, this can be the winning level). The other player still receives his full allotment of Treasure. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), you may use the coin to add a monster from your hand or from the top of the Door discards to a combat other than your own.

March 2009

Eat your heart out, Fonzarelli!Grab the (empty) box for your current Munchkin game. Lean the lid against the bottom to form a ramp, as shown here. Set the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece on edge at the bottom of the ramp and flick it with your finger so it rolls up the ramp. If the coin clears the far side of the base, you have Jumped The Shark: take a face-down Door and a face-down Treasure card immediately. If anything else happens, lose 2 levels or suffer Death, your choice. (If you cannot lose the levels, then you die automatically!)

Munchkin 2009 Silver Piece Rule For Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day! That would be March 14 – 3/14 if you live in North America, and very confusing if you don't. But everyone gets to celebrate with a special, one-day only rule. This rule is only valid from midnight through 11:59 p.m. (in your time zone, you munchkin!) on March 14.

Set the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece in front of you at the start of the game. This represents an unstealable small Item, the Munchkin Mama's Apple Pi. You may use this to successfully Run Away from any one monster in the game, even if you had already failed your Run Away roll. When you use the Silver Piece, give it to the lowest-Level player at the table, who may play it immediately unless he has already used a Munchkin coin this game. If youare lowest-Level, you may keep it for yourself (but you cannot use it again this game). In Munchkin Quest, you do not even take a hit for fleeing the combat!

Special bonus rule: If the time on any clock in the room is 3:14 (a.m. or p.m.) when you use the Silver Piece, go up a level immediately. This can be the winning level! No, you can't reset your clocks first, you munchkin!

April 2009

Play an Item card from your hand that you cannot currently use. Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece. On heads (the Munchkin head), the coin acts like a Cheat card, allowing you to use the Item anyway. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), give the card and the coin to the lowest-level player. The coin is now his, but he may not use it during this game.

May 2009

Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat. If it lands heads (the Super Munchkin), you have a +9 bonus for this combat, and may NOT ask for help, even if more monsters join the fight. If it lands tails (the Plutonium Dragon), you MUST obtain help if you are not winning the combat, and if you cannot, you must Run Away. If you get help, you must give your helper the Silver Piece as part of his reward unless he has already used a Munchkin coin this game.

June 2009

Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece before you roll a die or dice in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. On heads (the Super Munchkin face), you MAY adjust a single die by 1 or 2 pips in the direction more advantageous for you at that moment. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), you MUST adjust a single die by 1 or 2 pips in the direction less advantageous for you . . . and if those results would differ, you must use the adjustment that is worse. If the result of your coin flip cannot affect the outcome of the roll (for example, if you roll a 1 when trying to Run Away), you may attempt a second coin flip on a subsequent turn. (This is an exception to the normal "once per game" rule for Munchkin coins.) You may not flip the coin more than twice per game in any event.

Special Munchkin Quest bonus rule: After the Monster Die has been rolled (for any reason), you may drop the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece in the room you currently occupy in order to reroll the Monster Die. (If a player gained a DxM card on the first roll, he keeps it.) Any other player (i.e., not you) passing through the room may pick up the coin (but not use it) as with any other dropped money. If the game ends and no one has picked up the Silver Piece, you may reclaim it.

Special Origins 2009 Bonus Rule!

This rule is only valid during the 2009 Origins Game Fair, June 24-28, 2009. It may be used in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest.

Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece. On heads (the Super Munchkin), you may spend the Silver Piece when selling items for levels. It counts as 200 Gold Pieces. Give the coin to the lowest-level player (in case of a tie, have them roll a die, with high roll getting the coin). That player may not use the Silver Piece this game, but it is his to keep. If you are the lowest-level player or tied for lowest, keep the coin.

On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), keep the coin in front of you. If you fight a monster with "Dragon" in the name, you may use the coin to banish that monster and take its Treasure. This is not a kill and you do not gain a level for doing so. You are not required to use the coin if you prefer to fight. When you banish a Dragon, give the coin to the lowest-level player, as above.

July 2009

Place the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece in front of you at the start of any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. This represents Alms, an unstealable small item. On a turn during which you would normally have to give Charity to a single player, you may instead give Alms to that player by handing him the Silver Piece. It is now his, and he may use it during this game or save it for later. You are not required to use your Alms if you would prefer to give cards instead.

As always, you may not use the Silver Piece a second time during a single game, even if you somehow reacquire it (or another one).

August 2009

You may use this rule during any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. Set the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece on its edge in front of you. You may use one hand (but not both!) to stabilize it, if necessary, but you may not lean the Silver Piece against anything to prop it up. As long as the Silver Pieceremains vertical (inclined more than 45 degrees from the horizontal), it is a Reflecting Shield, a small unstealable item. When you are hit by a Curse (or, in games without Curses, a Trap), the Curse reflects back on the player who played it. If it came when you kicked open a door in a Munchkin game, it is discarded with no effect.

If the coin falls over while a Curse is targeted on you (i.e., before you have a chance to remove the card from the table), the Curse has its normal effect. If you reflect a Curse onto a player who also has a Reflecting Shield in play, both Shields are destroyed (remove them from the table) and the Curse affects both players.

The Reflecting Shield cannot be used to evade Traps in Munchkin Quest.

Bonus 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece Rules For GenCon Indy!

These rules are only valid between August 13, 2009 and August 16, 2009, inclusive.

In any Munchkin card game: Place the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece in front of you at the start of the game. You may use the coin once per game to activate any Class, Race, Loyalty, or Accent power that requires discards without discarding anything. (You may even use this when you have nothing to discard!) Remove the coin from play when you do this.

In Munchkin Quest: Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece at the start of one of your turns. If it lands heads (the Super Munchkin), double your Move for this turn AND restore any lost hits. If it lands tails (the Plutonium Dragon), draw the top two cards of the Monster deck and initiate combat with the higher-level monster.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin promotional coin per game.

September 2009

At any time during a game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, you may play the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece along with a Class, Race, Loyalty, Accent, Power, Style, or Training. This card does not count against your maximum allotment of that type (e.g., if you play the Silver Piece on a Class, you may play a second Class without a Super Munchkin card). The coin stays on that card until you lose it. If you voluntarily remove the card from play, keep the coin. Otherwise, flip the Silver Piece and give it to the highest-Level player if you flip heads (the Munchkin face) or the lowest-Level player if you flip tails (the Plutonium Dragon). If you are the highest or lowest, respectively, keep the coin.

Special PAX/Dragon*Con 2009 Bonus Rule!

This rule is in effect for everyone from September 3 through 7, 2009 . . . although it's probably most useful if you're attending one of the two mega-conventions that weekend.

Have someone who works for any game company – digital or tabletop – and who isn't playing in your game flip your 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece. On heads (the Munchkin face), you get a free face-up Treasure card. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), you get a free reroll.

October 2009

Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece at the start of any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. On heads (the Munchkin), you may play a Trick: give one player the Silver Piece to deny him either the level(s) or the Treasures from a combat he has just won. On tails (the Plutonium Dragon), you receive a Treat: once per game, you may draw the three bottom cards from the Treasure discards and put one of them into play immediately, returning the other two to the bottom of the discard pile.

Special Munchkin Quest rules! Instead of the above, you may use the following if you wish. Trick: When you are hit by a Trap, you automatically Dodge, even if the Trap would not otherwise allow a Dodge attempt. You do not receive a DxM for this. Anyone in the room with you must still deal with the Trap, of course! Treat: Once per game, when rolling on the Search Table, you may roll twice and use the roll you prefer.

Also watch for special convention rules coming up later this month! Those of you going to Rincon in Tucson may have a chance to match wits with the Munchkin Czar himself . . .

Special Spiel 2009 Bonus Rule!

This rule is valid anywhere on Saturday, October 24, 2009, as measured by your local calendar.

At any time except during combat, in any game of Munchkin or its siblings, you may spend the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece to pull one card each out of the Door and Treasure discard piles, subject to the following restrictions:

  • The Door card must be a Class, Race, Loyalty, or Accent, or a card that modifies one of these (Super MunchkinHalf-Breed, etc.).
  • The Treasure card must be an Item worth 500 Gold Pieces or less.

The same rule applies to Munchkin Quest, except that the draws are from the Deus Ex Munchkin and Treasure decks.

Special Bonus Rule for Spiel '09 attendees: To celebrate the last public appearance of the Munchkin Mascot in 2009, you may use ANY Munchkin or Munchkin Quest promotional coin to go up a level if the Mascot visits your table. Remove the coin from play. This counts as your one use per game (which means that you cannot do this if you have already used another coin ability). This cannot give you the winning level, no matter how much you beg.

November 2009

In honor of Thanksgiving in the United States, we present this rule for the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece:

Flip the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece at any time you are not in combat.

If it lands Heads (the Munchkin), you may Talk Turkey: automatically defeat any one avian monster when you are fighting alone. (And because birds are descended from reptiles, this applies to reptilian monsters, too . . . and yes, that includes dragons.) You may not use this ability to gain the winning level. Alternatively, you may use this ability to pass any bird-themed Curse or Trap (Chicken on Your Head, Duck of Doom, etc.) to one of your opponents.

If it lands Tails (the Plutonium Dragon), Your Goose Is Cooked! You must Run Away from the next avian or reptilian monster you face, even if you could otherwise defeat it. If you encounter a bird-themed Curse or Trap before an appropriate monster, take double the effect of the Curse or Trap instead (unless you have some way to cancel it).

These rules apply to any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. Remember that you can only use one coin effect per game.

December 2009

Happy holidays from the Munchkin team! During the month of December, you may use the 2009 Munchkin Silver Piece at any time to claim the top Door or Treasure discard and put it into your hand, or into play if it is legal to do so. (For Munchkin Quest, this is the top DxM or Treasure discard.)

Special 2010 Silver Piece rule! Until the end of 2009, any 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece may be used to Go Up A Level (but not the winning level).

2010 Munchkin Silver Piece

January 2010

You may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin or its siblings (but not Munchkin Quest; see below). Flip the coin. If it lands tails (the Chibithulhu), it may be played whenever anyone kicks open a door and does not encounter a monster; treat it as a Level 20 monster, granting 2 levels and 5 Treasures if defeated. Its Bad Stuff is "Lose 3 levels." If it lands heads (the Munchkin), it may be played on any monster as a +10 enhancer, granting two additional Treasures if defeated. If you play the Silver Piece on another player and that player wins the fight, he gets to keep the coin.

In Munchkin Quest, you may spend the 2010 Silver Piece to force any single monster to ignore you for one turn, unless that monster shares your base color. Keep the coin.

Remember that you can only use one Munchkin coin per game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, even if you have several coins available.

February 2010

In any game of Munchkin or its sequels, you may flip the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece after kicking open the door and finding a monster. On heads (the Munchkin), you may end your turn immediately (even skipping Charity) and pass the monster to the player on your left, who must start his turn by fighting it immediately rather than kicking open his own door. On tails (the Chibithulhu), you must turn over a second Door card and, if possible, apply it to the fight you are already in.

In Munchkin Quest, you may flip the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece after exploring a new room and exposing a monster. On heads (the Munchkin), you may back out through the link you entered from, even if you do not have Move to do so, without suffering any ill effects from the room or taking a hit from the monster. This ends your turn immediately. On tails (the Chibithulhu), turn over a second Monster card and add it to the room you are in.

Remember that you can only use one Munchkin coin per game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, even if you have several coins available.

March 2010

During any one combat in any game of Munchkin or its sequels, including Munchkin Quest, you may choose any non-one-shot Item you have in play, even one you cannot otherwise use, and flip the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece. On heads (the Munchkin), you may double the combat bonus of the Item, but you must discard the Item when the combat is over. On tails (the Chibithulhu), the Item's bonus becomes a penalty for that fight only. You do not have to discard the Item in that case.

Remember that you can only use one Munchkin coin per game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, even if you have several coins available.

April 2010

You may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat in any Munchkin or Munchkin Quest game to Fool the monsters. Any monsters with bonuses against your current Class, Race, Accent, or Loyalty (or combinations of those) will not get them for that fight. However, you cannot use any abilities from a Class, Race, Accent, or Loyalty that is protected by this rule, or the monsters will realize your deception and receive DOUBLE their usual bonus, and you must surrender your Silver Piece to the lowest-Level player other than yourself at the table.

If you lose or change your Class, Race, etc., you are not protected from bonuses against your new attribute.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, and (unless the rule says otherwise), you may only use a coin rule once per game.

May 2010

Happy May Day!

Play during any Munchkin card game or Munchkin Quest when you are fighting alone and are losing. Say "May Day, May Day!" and hand the Silver Piece to another player. If that player chooses to join you in the fight, he keeps the Silver Piece (and may use it later, if he wishes) and draws a face-down Door. If he chooses not to join you, he returns the Silver Piece and you draw a face-down Treasure, which you may put into play immediately. You may continue this process until you run out of opponents, you are no longer losing the fight, or you get bored and decide to Run Away.

If you and your helper win the fight, the helper automatically gets to choose one card from the available Treasures. If you and your helper lose, the helper automatically Runs Away, escaping all ill effects (even the loss of a hit, in Munchkin Quest), and your Run Away roll is at -1.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, and you may only use this coin for one fight, even if no one accepts your request for help.

June 2010

You may play the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin (any variety) or Munchkin Quest. You may only one use coin per game. The coin represents a June Bug.

In a Munchkin card game, the June Bug is a +2 Steed worth 200 Gold Pieces. (If you do not have the Steed rules, treat it as a Big item that does not count against your total of Big items.) In any combat in which you must Run Away, you may sacrifice the June Bug for an automatic escape from all monsters. If you do this, flip the coin. On Heads (the Munchkin), give the coin to the highest-Level player. On Tails (the Chibithulhu), give the coin to the lowest-Level player. Roll the die to break any ties.

In Munchkin Quest, you may play the June Bug in place of drawing a monster when you explore a new room. Roll normally for color. The June Bug is a Level 10 Bug with one die. It gives 1 level and 3 Treasures when defeated. Use the Silver Piece as the monster standie; the player who defeats the June Bug gets the coin.

July 2010

You may play the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, to turn a one-shot Item into a fire/flame attack. If you have the July 4 Chibithulhu at the table, you may play the Silver Piece on a permanent Item instead! In both cases, if the Item was already a fire/flame attack, it has an extra +5.

When you discard the Item, flip the Silver Piece. On Heads (the Munchkin), give it to the highest-Level player other than yourself. On Tails (the Chibithulhu), give it to the lowest-Level player other than yourself. Exception: Current members of any nation's armed forces, and veterans thereof, may keep the Silver Piece, with our thanks for your service.

You may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin during a game.

August 2010

August is Back-to-School Month in most of Texas, so we have the following school-themed rules:

In any variety of the Munchkin card game, you may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece when you kick open a door and discover a monster. Place the Silver Piece on the monster's card to place him in Detention. You may Look For Trouble or Loot The Room as though the monster had not appeared. At the start of your next turn, you encounter the monster from Detention instead of kicking open a door.

In Munchkin Quest, you may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece when you explore a new room. Place the Silver Piece on the monster's card to put him in Time Out (in the corner of the room). The monster will ignore you this turn.

Once the Detention or Time Out expires, flip the Silver Piece. On Heads (the Munchkin), give it to the highest-Level player other than yourself. On Tails (the Chibithulhu), give it to the lowest-Level player other than yourself. Exception: Current or retired teachers, at any level, may keep the Silver Piece, with our thanks.

You may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin during a game.

Special GenCon 2010 Bonus Rule! Bring ANY Munchkin promo coin to the Adventure Retail booth. Tell Munchkin Czar Andrew Hackard your favorite Munchkin card, and he will flip your coin and sign the side that lands face up. Whenever a rule for that coin requires you to give it up, you can keep it if Andrew's signature lands face-up (flip the coin if the rule does not already require it). One coin per person per day, please.

September 2010

September brings the beginning of fall (in the Northern Hemisphere), so here's a rule about falling:

You may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece during any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest when any player is in combat, unless that combat is for the win. Once you declare your intention to use the Silver Piece, all other players must immediately stop playing cards or rolling dice.

Hold the Silver Piece at least 18 inches (50 cm) above the playing surface, so that neither face of the coin faces the playing surface. Drop the Silver Piece on the table. If it lands Heads up (the Munchkin), the munchkin side wins the fight. If it lands Tails up (the Chibithulhu), the monster side wins. No cards or other promo items may change this result!

If you played the Silver Piece into someone else's fight, give that player the coin whether he won or lost. If you played it into your own fight, give it to the youngest player at the table other than yourself, or give it to a spectator.

Special PAX 2010 Bonus Rule!  Bring ANY Munchkin promo coin to the Steve Jackson Games demo area. (Yes, this is the same as the Special GenCon 2010 Bonus Rule: the rule so nice, we used it twice!)

October 2010

Play the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece during any combat in which there is at least one Undead monster. All monsters in the fight are now de-Undeadified. Any bonuses that come from fighting against Undead monsters (such as the Cleric's ability) are nullified. The monsters may be re-Undeadified if someone has the right cards or promo item. Give the Silver Piece to the player whose combat you interfered with. (If you interfered with your own fight, your opponents roll the die and high roller gets the coin.)

You may only play one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest promotional coin per game.

November 2010

You may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece during any game of any flavor of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest.

Flip the Silver Piece at any point during the game.

If it lands Heads (the Munchkin), you may "spend" the Silver Piece to draw an extra face-down Treasure after winning a fight. This Treasure goes into your hand whether or not you had help.

If it lands Tails (the Chibithulhu), you may "spend" the Silver Piece to Run Away automatically from a single monster. If you had a helper (or you WERE the helper), this protection does not extend to the other person in the fight. Heh heh.

Once you have used the Silver Piece, give it to the youngest player other than yourself. You may use only one promotional Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game.

December 2010

Happy Winter Holidays! (Good wishes not valid in the Southern Hemisphere.)

You may use the 2010 Munchkin Silver Piece during any Munchkin game using the Waiting for Santa or Santa's Revenge boosters. When another player discards a green- or red-bordered card from one of those expansions, you may give the Silver Piece to the discarding player and take the card into your hand (or play it immediately, if it is legal to play at that moment). [Exception: You cannot use the Silver Piece to retrieve "Five Gold Rings."] The Silver Piece remains "live" and may be used multiple times during the game, even by a player who has used the Silver Piece already. This is an explicit exception to the usual "one coin per game" rule.

In Munchkin Quest, you may use the 2010 Silver Piece to activate any Deal without spending Move or Gold. You may only do this once per game.

2011 Silver Piece

January 2011

Happy New Year!

This year's Munchkin Silver Piece features the Sparkly Good Fairy, who wants the munchkins to be nice to each other and is willing to bash heads to make sure of it.

Say, "That wasn't Fairy nice!" and flip the 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece when you have asked for help from a specific player and been refused. On heads (the Munchkin), you may take a random Door card from his hand. On tails (the SGF), you may take a random Treasure card from his hand. If you end up winning the fight, give him the Silver Piece. Otherwise, you get to keep it.

If you're playing with the Fairy Dust expansion, then instead of flipping the coin, you can take a random Fairy Dust card from his hand. In this case, you must give him the coin regardless of the outcome of the fight.

As always, you may only use one coin per game, and only once.

February 2011

All's fair in love and Munchkin . . .

Flip your 2011 Silver Piece at the start of a game of Munchkin (any variety) or Munchkin Quest. As you flip it, say the magical incantation, "Heads I win, tails you lose."

If the coin comes up heads (the Munchkin), you may discard your hand (minimum three cards) to win one combat, as long as it is not for the winning level. (This ends the fight; no one can invoke the 2.6 second rule to extend it.) When you do this, give the Silver Piece to the youngest player at the table other than yourself.

If the coin comes up tails (the Sparkly Good Fairy), you may discard your hand (minimum three cards) to force an opponent to lose one combat and have to Run Away. When you do this, give the Silver Piece to the opponent whose combat you have just ruined. If he had a helper, give the helper any one Item you have in play.

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game. Merely flipping the coin at the start of the game does not count as using it, however – you have to invoke its power.

(Thanks to Munchkin Hireling Angie Kreuser for the inspiration for this rule!)

March 2011

Braaaaaaaiiiiinnnnss . . .

In honor of the release later this month of our newest Munchkin core game, Munchkin Zombies, this month you may use the 2011 Silver Piece during any combat (in any Munchkin game except Munchkin Quest) to Undeadify one monster in the fight. Any other Undead may then join the fight without the use of a Wandering Monster card. (The monster counts as Undead for all purposes, including abilities such as a Cleric's combat bonus.)

In Munchkin Quest, you may use the Silver Piece on any player's turn to move any or all Undead monsters into that player's room.

In both cases, you must give the player the Silver Piece when the fight is done. If, for some reason, you use the Silver Piece on yourself, you may keep it but you may not use it again during the current game.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin promotional coin of any type per game, unless a specific rule supersedes this restriction.

April 2011

April 1 is Andrew's favorite holiday, so this rule is for (and from) him:

In any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, you may place the 2011 Silver Piece on the table, showing that you are a Fool. It takes the place of your Class, Race, Loyalty, Accent, or Mojo (whatever is appropriate for your given game). You may not combine it with other traits of the same type without the appropriate card (so if it acts a Fool Class, you cannot then play a Warrior without a Super Munchkin card). If you choose or are forced to lose a trait of that type, you must give the 2011 Silver Piece to the lowest-Level player at the table other than yourself. He may not use it during the same game.

The Fool's abilities are:

  • Fool's Luck: A Fool always succeeds at attempts to Run Away.
  • A Fool and His Money: Regardless of any cards played, a Fool receives exactly one level and one Treasure for killing a monster. Multiple monsters grant one level and one Treasure apiece.

May 2011

April showers bring May fl . . . flow . . . fl-ACHOOO!!!

In the spirit of the season, here's a 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece rule (for any Munchkin card game or Munchkin Quest) so simple that even the most antihistamine-fogged brain can comprehend it. You may use the 2011 Silver Piece to throw Sneezing Powder into any combat in which you are notinvolved. Flip the coin. If it comes up heads (the Munchkin), the munchkin side gets +3. If it comes up tails (the Sparkly Good Fairy), the monster side gets +3.

After the combat, hand the Silver Piece to the player on your left if the munchkins won or the player on your right if the monsters won.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game.

June 2011

In any Munchkin card game, or Munchkin Quest, you may give the 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece to another player during combat on your turn to force that player to help you, as long as that combat would not give you the winning level. If the munchkin side wins, you must also give your helper first choice among the Treasure cards. You cannot force a player to help who could not legally help you otherwise.

July 2011

When, in the course of Munchkin events, it becomes necessary for one helper to dissolve the avaricious bands which have connected him with another . . .

In honor of Independence Day, here in the United States, we hold this rule to be self-evident: A person helping in a combat, in any Munchkin card game or Munchkin Quest, may give the 2011 Silver Piece to the person he is helping in order to back out of a fight with no penalty. That player may try for another helper, if he chooses.

Players may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin, of any type, per game unless the coin rule says otherwise.

August 2011

It's still the dog days of summer here in the United States, and we understand how the heat can get a munchkin down. In any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, you may use the 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece to throw a Freezing Potion into any combat. (In Munchkin Quest, this is a Throwable item, so you have to be in the same room or an adjacent room for it to work.) The Freezing Potion grants +5 to either side and is usable once only. After the fight, give the Silver Piece to the youngest player other than yourself.

Players may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin (of any type) per game, unless the coin rule says otherwise.

Special GenCon 2011 Rule!

From August 3 through 7, 2011, you may "spend" the 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece to take a just-discarded card and put it into your hand. (Exceptions:You may not buy back Fairy Dust cards or Dungeon cards in Munchkin games, or Monster cards in Munchkin Quest games.) Add the Silver Piece to the Treasure for the next monster(s) killed.

Players may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin (of any type) per game, unless the coin rule says otherwise.

September 2011

You may use the 2011 Silver Piece at any time except during combat to draw face-down cards. Flip the Silver Piece and roll a die. If the Silver Piececomes up heads (the Super Munchkin), draw from the Treasure deck; if it comes up tails (the Sparkly Good Fairy), draw from the Door deck (or DxM deck in Munchkin Quest). If the die roll is odd, draw one card from the deck; if it is even, draw two.

After you draw the cards, give the Silver Piece to the oldest player at the table, unless you are oldest, in which case, give it to the youngest. It's theirs now.

Players may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin (of any type) per game, unless the coin rule says otherwise.

October 2011

Good grief . . .

In celebration of the single greatest Halloween program ever, here is your 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece rule for October:

Play after winning a combat in which you had a helper. Instead of giving your helper the agreed-upon reward, hand him the Silver Piece and say, "You got a rock." (If you have any cards in play with "Rock" or "Stone" in the title, you must hand those cards over as well!) The victim recipient may use the Silver Piece in this game . . . and if he uses it on you, it doesn't count as his one coin usage!

Except as noted above, you may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game.

November 2011

Autumn, when all the leaves change color . . .

You may flip the 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece at the start of the game of any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest. If it comes up heads (the Munchkin), you may choose to draw any or all of your starting Treasures as Doors instead. If it comes up tails (the Sparkly Good Fairy), you may choose to draw any or all of your starting Doors as Treasures instead. If it lands on edge, start the game at Level 5. (For Munchkin Quest, substitute DxM for Doors in the rule.)

You may not use this or any other coin again in the same game unless you die, in which case, you may flip the coin a second time when you redraw. In this case, however, you must give the Silver Piece to the oldest player at the table other than yourself.

December 2011

Santa's not the only one bringing gifts this December . . . the Sparkly Good Fairy wants in on the action!

After you have helped win a combat in any version of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, you may flip the 2011 Silver Piece. On Heads (the Super Munchkin), you gain a level, which can be the winning level! (If, for some reason, you were already gaining a level, gain another one.) On Tails (the Sparkly Good Fairy), draw two face-up Treasures after the monster Treasures are parceled out. Give the Silver Piece to the player whose birthday is closest to December 25, unless one of your players has a birthday on the day you're playing, in which case, give it to that player.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest promotional coin per game . . . except . . .

Special Rule! If you are using Munchkin Fairy Dust Dice, roll one Fairy Dust d6 after using the above rule: if it comes up 6, you not only keep the Silver Piece, you may use it again this game! No one may play Loaded Die or Reloaded Die on this roll.

2012 Silver Piece

January 2012

FREEZE!

In any variety of Munchkin (including Munchkin Axe Cop!), you may flip the 2012 Silver Piece when you Kick Open The Door and do not find a monster. On Heads (the Super Munchkin), draw a face-down Door card and then decide whether to Loot The Room or Look For Trouble. On Tails (Axe Cop), you may Kick Open Another Door . . . and if this one is also not a monster, you may Loot The Room or Look For Trouble.

In Munchkin Quest, you may flip the 2012 Silver Piece when your turn is over and it is time to roll for Monster Movement. On Heads, draw a DxM card and do not roll Monster Movement at all. On Tails, roll Monster Movement, resolve it, and then roll it again. (The second roll also grants a DxM card, if appropriate.)

As always, you may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest promotional coin per game, unless the rule specifies otherwise.

February 2012

Everyone knows February is all about Valentine's Day, but Axe Cop is too busy chopping off heads to worry about love. So we're going to pick the other important holiday in February: President's Day.

Flip your 2012 Silver Piece at the start of the game.

HEADS: The Munchkin, who for purposes of this rule represents George Washington. (Just go with it.) You may use the Silver Piece to automatically kill a single plant monster. You must give the Silver Piece to the oldest player at the table (or at least the player who will admit to being the oldest) after the combat, unless your father is playing, in which case you must give it to him.

TAILS: Axe Cop! Trivia note: Axe Cop once met Abraham Lincoln. After being Cursed by another player, you may spend the Silver Piece to set free all Hirelings, Allies, Sidekicks, or Minions, including your own. They all go to the discard pile. Any Items they were carrying go with them. You must do this immediately; you cannot retrieve Items from your own Hireling first. After everything gets discarded, give the Silver Piece to the player who Cursed you.

The player to whom you give the 2012 Silver Piece may not use it during the same game.

Because Munchkin Quest doesn't have Hirelings, don't bother to flip the 2012 Silver Piece in an MQ game; just use the HEADS result.

March 2012

Y'all should start seeing Munchkin 8 – Half Horse, Will Travel in your Friendly Local Game Stores very shortly. To give y'all a taste, you may use the 2012 Silver Piece to start any Munchkin game, including Munchkin Quest, as one of the two races from Munchkin 8:

HEADS (the Munchkin): You are a Centaur.

  • Two Left Feet: You may use two Footgear.
  • Leader of the Herd: You may have any number of Steeds in play.

TAILS (Axe Cop): You are a Lizard Guy.

  • Cold-Blooded: "Usable once only" Items that you play to help the monsters count double.
  • Drop Your Tail: You get +1 to Run Away from Level 10-15 monsters and +2 to Run Away from Level 16 and higher monsters.

April 2012

In the United States, our income tax returns are due this month, so we're all thinking about ways to beat the system. In that spirit, here's a rule about dodging Curses!

You may use the 2012 Munchkin Silver Piece in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, to escape any Curse. (In Munchkin games, you can also use this rule on Traps; Munchkin Quest Traps are different and are not covered by the rule.) Roll the six-sided die and count that many players to your left, skipping yourself. The Curse hits that player instead of you. However, you must give that player the Silver Piece after the effects of the Curse are resolved.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin rule per game, unless otherwise specified.

May 2012

In the United States, May brings many important days of recognition, but none so important as Mother's Day. Or so our mothers tell us. Here's a rule in their honor:

You may use the 2012 Silver Piece in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, to add a Mommy Monster to combat. The Mommy will join any monster of Level 5 or below, or that is a Baby (or has Baby in the name). The Mommy is 10 levels higher than the original monster, and gives 1 extra level and 2 extra Treasures (above those she inherited from her offspring) when killed.

In the Munchkin card games, give the 2012 Silver Piece to the current player following the combat. That player may not use it again that game unless she is a mother herself.

In Munchkin Quest, the Silver Piece becomes part of the Mommy's Treasure. If Mommy is not killed before the end of the game, or is banished in a way that does not award Treasure, you may reclaim your Silver Piece. The Mommy Monster travels with her offspring and is considered to have the same base color.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, unless the rule says otherwise (and this one doesn't, so there).

Special bonus rule! If you are playing on May 13, Mother's Day, the Mommy Monster is 20 levels higher and grants 2 extra levels and 5 extra Treasures!

June 2012

Andrew's on vacation, so here's a Munchkin and Munchkin Quest rule about taking some time off . . .

You may use the 2012 Silver Piece at any time on your turn to end your turn immediately. If you were in combat, all monsters and other cards played in the combat are discarded, and you lose a level. Otherwise, play passes to the next player with no penalty to you. (Unless you play the Silver Piece during your Charity phase, you are not required to give Charity.)

When you use this rule, everyone at the table who has not yet used a Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin rolls a die. Give the Silver Piece to the high roller. (If necessary, roll again to break ties.) In the unlikely event that everyone has used a coin but you, you may keep the 2012 Silver Piece as a reward for your patience.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin in a game, unless a specific rule says otherwise.

July 2012

We're going to hang out with 100,000 or so of our favorite geek friends at San Diego Comic-Con this month. It will be EPIC. Hey, that gives me an idea . . .

You may use the 2012 Silver Piece during any Munchkin-family card game. (For Munchkin Quest, keep reading . . .) Place the card, at any time, on a Class, Race, Accent, Loyalty, or Mojo, to turn that card into the Epic version of itself. If you manage to keep that Epic trait until the end of the game, you may keep the Silver Piece. Otherwise, when you lose the Epic trait, give the Silver Piece to any other player who had the same trait in play – if more than one player has it, high roller gets it. (If no one else has it, give the coin to the first player who plays the trait . . . and if no one does, you can keep the Silver Piece!)

(Don't have the Epic Munchkin rules? Get the free download here!)

In Munchkin Quest, the 2012 Silver Piece becomes your Hireling. You may play the coin at any time by flipping it. If the Munchkin comes up, he will carry an additional Big item for you and allow you to use it (as long as it is otherwise legal) without suffering any movement penalties. If Axe Copcomes up, you may use two additional Hands. You may also sacrifice your Hireling to escape one combat without suffering any penalties, including losing hits. If you sacrifice your Hireling, he drops any items he was carrying in the room you just left.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game unless a rule says otherwise.

August 2012

You may use this rule in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, during any combat that will not result in you winning the game. You may not have a helper in that combat. To activate the coin, flip it on the table – all other play must cease. If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you win the fight immediately, gaining all appropriate levels and Treasure. If it comes up Tails (Axe Cop), you lose the combat and suffer the Bad Stuff for the highest-Level monster in the fight.

Loaded Die (and Reloaded Die) may not be used to dictate the result of the coin toss, but may allow (or force) another flip of the coin.

You may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, unless the rule says otherwise.

September 2012

You may flip the 2012 Munchkin Silver Piece instead of Kicking Down The Door in any game of Munchkin.

If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), draw two face-down Treasures and skip immediately to the Charity phase of your turn. If it comes up Tails (Axe Cop), take the top monster from the Door discards and fight it as though you had found it when Kicking Down The Door.

In Munchkin Quest, you may flip the Silver Piece when you explore a new room. If you flip Heads, draw two face-down Treasures and do not draw a Monster; if you flip Tails, fight the top monster in the Monster discards as though you drew that card when you explored the room. In both cases, your turn may continue if you have Move remaining.

In both cases, once you have used the Silver Piece, put it on the table; the winner of the game decides who gets to keep the coin. (The winner may not take the Silver Piece – it has to be another player.)

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game.

October 2012

This rule was submitted by Bil Thompson. Thanks, Bil!

October is the time when all good munchkins play tricks on their friends and grab treats for themselves. This month's rule is in that Halloween spirit (heh heh, spirit). It may be used in any version of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest.

Flip the 2012 Silver Piece at any time. If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you get a Treat: a +5 bonus you can give the munchkin side in any combat. If it comes up Tails (Axe Cop), you get a Trick: a +5 bonus you can give the monsters in any combat. When you use the Silver Piece, give it to the player whose birthday is closest to Halloween.

You may use only one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game.

November 2012

This rule was submitted by Oded Epshtain. Thanks, Oded!

You may use the 2012 Silver Piece during any game of any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, when you are required to roll a die of any type. Flip the Silver Piece before rolling the die; if it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), treat it as a Loaded Die and choose your result. If it comes up Tails (Axe Cop), roll the die twice and the lowest-Level player other than you chooses which result you get.

If you get Heads, give the Silver Piece to the oldest player at the table (unless that's you, in which case give it to the youngest). If you get Tails, give it to any player whose munchkin is the opposite sex from yours.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game.

December 2012

This month's rule is courtesy of Haily Hanna. Thanks, Haily!

Every December, Santa Munchkin brings a gift to all good munchkins everywhere! This year, he's bringing you a way to use your 2012 Silver Piece to cheat – but only a little bit! – in any version of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest.

Flip the 2012 Silver Piece at the start of the game. If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you may ignore the Big or Complex nature of a single item. If it comes up Tails (Axe Cop), it allows you to treat a single 2-Handed item as a 1-Handed item instead. In both cases, you must place the Silver Piece on the card when you decide to use the effect. (But these effects hold for everyone – if you make a Big item no longer Big, then a Thief can try to steal it!)

If the item with the Silver Piece is stolen, lost, or sold, take the Silver Piece back and flip it again. Otherwise, you cannot remove the coin from an item once you have placed it on the card. You may use the Silver Piece as many times as you like per game*.

Thanks for all your support in 2012 – we're looking forward to a great 2013!

* Yes, this is an exception to the usual rule about only one coin use per game. But you still can only use one coin – if you use this rule, you cannot use any other coins this game.

2013 Silver Piece

January 2013

Hmm, this tree has badly matted needles . . . Hey, we got a nappy yew here!

Once you're done groaning, please enjoy the first rule for the 2013 Munchkin Silver Piece!

You may flip the 2013 Silver Piece at any time you are about to suffer the effects of a Curse (or Trap or Disaster), or are about to get hit with a monster's Bad Stuff. On Heads (the Munchkin), the Curse or Bad Stuff fizzles. On Tails (the Duck of Doom), however, you successfully Duck: pass the coin to the player on your left or right, your choice, who suffers the effect instead! (Exception: If you were about to enjoy the peace of Death, it just fizzles – making another player die for you is Not Cool.)

Special Rule! If you have the Duck of Doom or Duck of Gloom with you at the table and flip Tails, go up a level! This cannot be the winning level.

February 2013

February is the second month, so you have two choices on how to use the 2013 Silver Piece:

If you are fighting a monster, you may play the 2013 Silver Piece with the Duck of Doom side up to give that monster a -5 in combat. It is worth one less Treasure (minimum of 1 Treasure). After the combat is finished, give the 2013 Silver Piece to the player who most recently had a birthday. Special Rule:If the monster has had the Re-Duck-ulous enhancer played on it, you kill the monster outright!

OR...

If you are the target of an effect that would cost you levels, you may play the 2013 Silver Piece with the Munchkin side up to cancel that effect. (You may not do this if you were voluntarily sacrificing the level, for instance to lure the Munchkinomicon.) Then give the 2013 Silver Piece to the player who will next have a birthday. Special Rule: If you are the target of Curse! Duck of Doom, go up two levels instead of losing them, and these may be the winning levels!

In both cases, if there is a player at the table whose birthday is today (meaning the day when you're playing, not February 1), that player not only gets the Silver Piece but goes up a level!

March 2013

At the beginning of your first turn in a new game (in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest), flip the Munchkin 2013 Silver Piece once. If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you come out ahead (pun intended) and go up a level. If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), roll a Munchkin d6 and that result will be your combat bonus in your first combat, unless you roll the Munchkin head on the d6, in which case go up a level anyway.

You may only use one coin of any type per game, unless a specific rule contradicts this.

Thanks to Chris Smith for this month's rule!

April 1, 2013

You may flip the 2013 Munchkin Silver Piece at any time when you are in a combat that might win you the game.

If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), do the following, in this order:

  1. Walk three times around your chair, anticlockwise.
  2. Play every Curse (or Trap or Disaster) in your hand on the player two seats to your left. If you're in a two-player game, curse yourself, stop playing, and go find some friends already.
  3. Sing the entire first verse of "It's a Small World," but in a minor key. +5 bonus in your combat if you can actually bring tears to your eyes while doing so.
  4. Call your mother. She misses you.
  5. Walk three times around the block, clockwise.
  6. Do the Hokey Pokey.
  7. Turn yourself around.
  8. Peek at the top Door card. Cackle menacingly. Place it on the bottom of the Door deck.
  9. Construct a map requiring five colors.
  10. Once all of this is completed, take a +2 bonus in the current combat.

If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), lose two levels and flip the Silver Piece again.

You may use the 2013 Silver Piece – no, wait. You must use the 2013 Silver Piece every time you're in combat for the win. Have fun!

Thanks to April F. Day for this month's rule!

April 2013, For Real This Time

You may use this rule in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. Flip the 2013 Munchkin Silver Piece at any time.

If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you may discard an Item card from your hand or the table. Go through the discards and take any two Items with a Gold Piece value less than or equal to the one you discarded.

If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), you must discard two Item cards from your hand or the table (or one from each). Go through the discards and take any one Item with a Gold Piece value less than or equal to the sum of the values of the cards you discarded. If you don't have two Item cards to discard, lose a level.

You may only use a Munchkin coin once per game, unless a specific rule says otherwise.

Thanks to Chris McClung for this month's rule!

May 2013

You may use this month's rule when you are in combat during any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest.

Give the Silver Piece to a player to borrow one of his in-play Items. You may equip it for the duration of this combat. At the end of the fight, win or lose, you must return the card to him. He keeps the Silver Piece.

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game, unless a specific rule says otherwise.

Thanks to Josh Allen for this month's rule!

June 2013

You may flip the 2013 Munchkin Silver Piece when you are in combat and a Wandering Monster card has just been used against you.

If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), discard the Wandering Monster card and the Monster that came with it. No one may add any more monsters to this fight. This is not a kill, and you get neither levels nor Treasures for the dismissed monster.

If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), add the top Monster from the discards to the fight in addition to the Wandering Monster! If there are no Monsters in the discards, you are at -10 for this combat.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, and only once unless the rule says otherwise.

July 2013

You may flip the 2013 Munchkin Silver Piece at the start of your turn in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest.

If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), draw three face-up Treasures OR go up a level (cannot be the winning level), your choice. Skip your turn. You mayuse the Silver Piece again on a subsequent turn.

If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), suffer the Bad Stuff of the top monster in the discard pile and hand the Silver Piece to the player on your right. You may not use the 2013 Silver Piece (or any other coin) again this game, even if it works its way back to you.

Whoever holds the Silver Piece at the end of the game gets to keep it.

August 2013

This rule may be used in any variety of Munchkin or in Munchkin Quest.

At the start of the game, flip the 2013 Silver Piece.

If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you may use it to cancel a Curse as the Curse is played. You may not cancel a Curse that is already in play. After you use it, have all the other players roll the die and give the Silver Piece to the high roller.

If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), you may fight the Duck when you Look For Trouble, or add it to a fight with a Wandering Monster card. The Duck is Level 13 and gives 1 level and 3 Treasures if killed. Its Bad Stuff is "Lose 2 levels." If you use the Duck on another player's turn, he gets the Silver Piece after the fight. If you use it on your own, have all the other players roll the die and give the Silver Piece to the low roller.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, unless a specific rule says otherwise. This one doesn't.

September 2013

This rule may be used in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest.

Flip the 2013 Silver Piece at the start of the game. If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you may choose to forgo all the Treasure from a successful combat in exchange for an extra level (but it cannot be the winning level). If it comes up Tails (the Duck of Doom), you may choose to forgo the level(s) from a successful combat in exchange for double the Treasure. In either case, you must give the Silver Piece to the lowest-Level player at the table (other than yourself) once you have used its ability. That player may use it this game, unless he has already used a Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game, unless a specific rule says otherwise. This one doesn't.

October 2013

To celebrate this month's release of Munchkin Pathfinder (yay!), we have TWO rules, one for all versions of the Munchkin card game and one for Munchkin Quest.

Munchkin: Put the 2013 Silver Piece in front of you at the start of the game. Once per game, you may use the Pathfinder Faction ability from Munchkin Pathfinder: before you Kick Open The Door, look at the top two Door cards, discard one, and place the other on top of the Door deck. Then Kick Open The Door normally. Remove the Silver Piece from play after you have used its ability.

Munchkin Quest: Put the 2013 Silver Piece in front of you at the start of the game. Once per game, you may use the Silver Piece to back out of a room you have just explored without penalty (and without costing additional Move). The room, and the monster it contains, remains in play. This does not count as Running Away. Remove the Silver Piece from play after you have used its ability.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin rule per game, unless a particular rule specifies otherwise.

November 2013

You may use the 2013 Silver Piece in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, immediately after you have suffered a bad effect from a Curse, Disaster, or Trap. Flip the coin. On Heads (Spyke, the Munchkin), take two face-down Treasures. On Tails (the Duck of Doom), go up a level – this cannot be the winning level in Munchkin! After you flip the Silver Piece, give it to the lousy jerk who played the Curse, Disaster, or Trap on you – if you found it when you Kicked Open The Door, give it to the highest-Level player at the table. It's his now.

You may only use one coin rule per game, unless the specific rule says otherwise. This one does not.

December 2013

Last month, we released the booster Munchkin Gets Promoted, so here's a rule about promotional items!

You may use this rule in any Munchkin-family game, including Munchkin Quest, when you are about to play or use a one-time promotional item (coin, bookmark, certain special cards, etc.). Playing the 2013 Silver Piece "buys" you a second use of that item, later in the same game. Give the 2013 Silver Piece to the player most nearly across the table; that player may not use the coin this game. If using the item requires you to give it away or destroy it, you do not need to do that until the second use of the item or the end of the game, whichever comes first.

You may only use a single coin per game . . . except that this coin lets you play it along with another one if you want. You cannot play a 2013 Silver Pieceon another 2013 Silver Piece!

Watch for the 2014 Munchkin Silver Piece, coming to Warehouse 23 or a convention near you early next year!

2014 Silver Piece

January 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

You may use the 2014 Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, while you are in combat. Flip the Silver Piece. If it comes up Heads (the Munchkin), you may replace one monster in the fight with a monster from your hand and give the Silver Piece to the player on your right. If it comes up Tails (the Seal of the Apocalypse), you may replace one monster in the fight with the top monster from the Door discards and give the Silver Piece to the player on your left. In either case, if there is no monster available, the Silver Piece has no effect and you may try to use it again later.

As always, you may only use one Munchkin coin per game unless a rule says otherwise.

February 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

You may use the 2014 Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest when you are in combat on your turn to banish one monster (and all its Treasure) to the discard pile. Flip the Silver Piece when you do this; on Heads (the Munchkin), there is no other effect, but on Tails (the Seal of the Apocalypse), also lose a level. (Special Apocalypse rule: Open a Seal instead.)

After the combat, give the Silver Piece to the player who most recently had a birthday. If it is someone's birthday that day, they get the Silver Piece andgo up a level. This may not be the winning level.

You may only use one Munchkin or Munchkin Quest coin per game unless a rule says otherwise.

March 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

You may use the 2014 Silver Piece at any time – except during any player's combat – in any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest. Explain this rule before using it – if you fail to do so, everyone BUT you goes up a level, and you LOSE a level!

Stand the coin on edge and flick one side to start it spinning. (You may have to try it a few times before you get a good spin going.) While the coin is spinning, everyone at the table guesses how they think it will land by showing thumbs up for Heads (Spyke) or thumbs down for Tails (the Seal of the Apocalypse). Everyone who is correct goes up a level (but this may not be the winning level). Anyone who fails to guess loses a level, unless they were not at the table.

If your guess was wrong, keep the Silver Piece. If your guess was right, give the Silver Piece to someone who guessed wrong.

You may only use one coin rule per game unless a specific rule says otherwise.

April 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

It's April, which of course means it's time to make a fool of yourself in the service of Munchkin bonuses! During any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, when you are in combat, you may balance the 2014 Silver Piece on your nose. For every three seconds the coin stays in place, your side gets a +2 combat bonus, to a maximum bonus of +10. (You should probably have someone besides you keeping time.) NOTE: No cheating! If you use any sort of adhesive to keep the Silver Piece on your nose, go back to Level 1 and lose all your cards in play AND in your hand.

Special rule: On April 1, the bonus is +4 for every three seconds! The maximum is +20 on April 1.

Keep the Silver Piece when you're done; if you actually do this, you have already suffered enough.

You may only use one coin rule per game unless a specific rule says otherwise.

May 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

You may use the 2014 Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest. At the start of the game, choose whether your coin is Heads up (Spyke) or Tails up (the Seal of the Apocalypse). The face showing gives you a once-per-game effect:

  • Heads: You may give yourself +5 in one combat.
  • Tails: You may give yourself a -10 in one combat, or an opponent may give you a -5 in one combat.

After you have used the effect of the face that is showing, turn the coin over; the other face is now active. After both faces have been activated, if an opponent activated the Tails side, give the Silver Piece to that opponent; otherwise, give it to an opponent of your choice. That opponent may not use the Silver Piece this game.

You may only use one coin rule per game unless a specific rule says otherwise.

June 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

This month, it's up to your opponents – and a little luck – how good your Silver Piece is. You'll want to print this rule out (or have this page bookmarked on your browser of choice) for reference.

At any time when you are in combat alone, in any variety of Munchkin (including Munchkin Quest), you may show this rule to the rest of the table and ask them to guess whether the coin will come up Heads (Spyke the Super Munchkin) or Tails (the Seal of the Apocalypse). When everyone has guessed, flip the coin; you get +2 in this combat for everyone who guessed correctly. Give the Silver Piece to one of the players who guessed wrong – if no one was wrong, keep it!

(If someone decides to be a spoilsport and refuses to guess, you get +4 for that player. So there!)

You may only use one coin rule per game unless a specific rule says otherwise.

July 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

July is the seventh month, so here's a rule in honor of lucky number seven. At any time, in any combat in any Munchkin game (including Munchkin Quest), you may flip the Silver Piece to try to increase your bonus. After the first flip, each matching flip in a row is worth an extra +2, to a max of +10 if you can flip the same side six times. If you do successfully flip the same side six times, you can choose to go double or nothing on the seventh flip, gaining either +20 or no bonus at all. You may use a Loaded Die or Cheat! card to change one flip to the side you prefer. (Your opponents may not use a Reloaded Die to frustrate your attempt.)

If you flip the opposite side on the very first try, you may keep the Silver Piece and try again in a later combat; otherwise, you must give the Silver Pieceto another player of your choice. You do not receive any bonus if you don't relinquish the coin!

You may only use one coin rule per game unless a specific rule says otherwise.

August 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

In any variety of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, you may "spend" the 2014 Silver Piece to block the use of any other promotional or accessory item (defined, in this case, as anything that has a Munchkin/MQ rule but is not a Munchkin/MQ card). You can even use your Silver Piece to block the use of another Silver Piece, of this or any year. Exception #1: If the use of the item requires its destruction or consumption, you cannot block its use once that destruction or consumption has begun. Exception #2: You cannot prevent the use of a Boon from the Munchkin Level Counter app.

Give the Silver Piece to the player whose plans you have just thwarted. He keeps the coin and cannot use the item he was trying to use for the rest of that game.

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game unless a rule says otherwise. This one does not.

September 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

In any game of Munchkin, including Munchkin Quest, you may "spend" the Silver Piece to Hunt for Treasure. Give the Silver Piece to the player with the fewest Treasures in play (your choice if there is a tie). Show everyone the top three cards from the Treasure deck. Take the one you want and shuffle the other two back into the Treasure deck. You may play this Treasure immediately, even if you are in combat.

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game unless a rule says otherwise. This one does not.

October 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

Happy Halloween!

You may use the 2014 Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest to make yourself Undead for one combat, unless you are fighting for the win. This means that you can add Undead monsters to your side of the fight, but it also means that any player who has cards or abilities usable against Undead can use them against you. After the combat, win or lose, give the Silver Piece to the lowest-Level player (other than yourself, if you are the lowest).

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game unless a rule says otherwise. This one does not.

November 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

It's the middle of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, and here's an appropriately dreary rule!

In any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to die, according to the Death rules in your game. (Sometimes, a little death is healthy!) Give the 2014 Silver Piece to the oldest player at the table (other than yourself), or at least the player who is willing to admit to being the oldest.

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game unless a rule says otherwise. This one does not.

December 2014

Meta-rule for all of 2014: if you are playing Munchkin Apocalypse, or a blended game that includes Apocalypse cards, you may use the 2014 Silver Piece to Open or Close a Seal, your choice. Give the Silver Piece to the next player to successfully Run Away from a monster. As usual in Apocalypse, this rule cannot be used to reverse the opening of the Seventh Seal.

Happy Holidays!

You may use the 2014 Silver Piece in any game of Munchkin or Munchkin Quest to make yourself a Santa for one combat, unless you are fighting for the win. This means that you can add Santa monsters to your side of the fight, but it also means that any player who has cards or abilities usable against Santas can use them against you. After the combat, win or lose, give the Silver Piece to the youngest player (other than yourself, if you are the youngest).

You may only use one Munchkin coin per game unless a rule says otherwise. This one does not.

2015 Silver Piece

We have decided not to release a 2015 Munchkin Silver Piece. The Silver Pieces you already have are still usable, however; each coin can use the rule matching the current month and the year of the coin. You can find all the previous rules on the Silver Piece rule archive.

Blue Silver Piece

You may use the Munchkin Blue Silver Piece in any Munchkin game, at any time. Activate the coin to buy back any one card from any discard pile (except Dungeons) and place it in your hand.

You may only use one Munchkin coin (of any type) per game, and may only use that coin once unless otherwise noted.

Christmas Coins

  1. Every month, the Munchkin Silver Piece rule changes, so come here to make sure you have the most current rule! The Christmas coins use this rule (but see rule 3, below).
  2. You may use BOTH Christmas coins during the game, once apiece, and you are not required to give up the Christmas coins even if the rule says you do.
  3. Rules 1 and 2 are suspended between December 25 and January 5. Instead, each coin is an unstealable one-shot item: the red coin's bonus increases from +1 on December 25 to +12 on January 5, and the green coin's bonus decreases from +12 on December 25 to +1 on January 5.
  4. As an extra bonus, when you use the red Christmas coin, draw a face-down Door, and when you use the greenChristmas coin, draw a face-down Treasure. You may put these in play immediately, even during combat.

Munchkin Quest Gold Piece

Gold is awesome. How do you make gold more awesome?

Well, we've done it. Here's a gold piece you can spend over and over again.

Each player may use one, and only one, Munchkin Quest Gold Piece in a game of Munchkin Quest. It replaces one of your 100-gold pieces at the start of a game. It is considered a Magic Shiny. Place the gold piece in front of you with the "100" side up. Any time you spend gold, you may flip the gold piece over to the Munchkin side and count it as 100. If the Munchkin side is up at the beginning of your turn, flip the gold piece back to the 100 side. If any rule would make you lose the gold piece, it remains yours, but you cannot use it for the rest of the game.

How awesome is that?
