--------------------GEV List Thingy, Jan 17th-------------------- From: klaus@snarc.greenie.muc.de (Klaus Weidner) Subject: Re: Ogre To: hcobb@fly2.berkeley.edu (Henry J. Cobb) I just got the `Ogre deluxe edition' recently. Ogre is the closest thing to an `action game' I've seen in a board game, lots of destruction and general mayhem without having to learn complicated rules or spending hours for a game. I'm not much into classic wargames, I prefer `beer & pretzels' games. Due to a lack of wargaming experience, I'm not sure what the best strategy for the defenders is - I tried a few solo games to experiment, with the Ogre basically charging straight at the command post and trying to destroy everything on the way. So far, I tried putting one Howitzer near the center of the board, the command center in the lower right corner and another howitzer near the lower center, so that the Ogre would have to detour to destroy the second one. I try to take out the Ogre's guns as fast as possible, but ignore the AP guns and bear the infantry losses in order to concentrate on destroying the treads. If I tried to destroy the AP guns too, I usually didn't have enough time/firepower left to stop the Ogre, and it just rolled over my HQ. I am curious what kind of setup and strategy experienced players use, since the rules imply that it should be easy for the defense to wipe out a `charge straight ahead' Ogre, and I just barely seem to manage it... ciao, Klaus -- \ klaus@snarc.greenie.muc.de--kweidner@physik.tu-muenchen.de--2:246/55.4 \ .signature error -- quote dumped ___ [There are two main schools of defence tactics in GEV: Sniper: Get a bunch of GEV's that hit and scatter (to remove first the Mains and then a layer of threads), once the Ogre is unable to strike back it becomes a waiting game to see if it can stagger on to victory under threat of immovability. I suspect that the large load of missiles on the Mk V was added to deal with this. Thud: Take half Heavies and half Missile Tanks and stomp the beast (weapons first). Steve (by definition the prime Ogre, no?), suggests that the Beast can win by striking at the fringes of this mass and dening them their massive blow. Note that 40 light tanks (if allowed) can swamp the Beast by shear weight of defence strength. (The light tank is not balanced without the other factors in the Cobb formula that it lacks). Take a look at Ogre minnies for some other units that are fun to taunt Ogres with. (There was a disscusion some time ago about the impact of missile infantry on Ogres). -HJC] Henry J.
