--------------------GEV List Thingy, July 28th-------------------- From: Mark C H Donelan Subject: A tactical problem To: hcobb@fly2.berkeley.edu (Henry J. Cobb) Hi to all GEV/Ogre Players I have recently tried a tactical problem in GEV. Using the board game version (not miniatures) the scenario Ceasfire Collapse (9.05) lends itself to a strange defensive tactic. The Ceasefire Collapse give both sides 18sp inf and 16 armor units. One player sets up west of the line made by hex 0401 and hex 0422 the other player sets up east of the line formed by 1801 2203 1408 2315 1822. Two town hexes are not rubble the 1816 town and the 0304 town. The tactical problem arises from the eastern players position. The east player may choose 8 howitzers as his units. With 8 howitzers (or 6 or seven and a handful of other units) the east player may blow the river bridge at will without any penalty and will have a "howitzer fortress". While the east player will not be able to win if the west player does not attack almost no force chosen by the west player will succeed (without using Ogres) in an attack. The ceasefire will HOLD. Which is really dull. What forces do the collective net wisdom recomend to beat the "Howitzer Fortress"? My first reaction was 16 lgev + 6 gevpc + 2 gev. But it didn't do well in my test trial. Sincerely Mark Donelan PS Any word on the new Ogre Mins? Last I heard about them was Feb. ___ [The problem to the Western forces in this case is getting his infantry accross in good order, to break through the defending infantry to allow a "Flight of the Hovercraft" into those tender rear areas. If you have a copy of a space gamer in the mid-30s I think, you could read the advanced tactics guide for GEV. (The most substantive article on the game per say, up to that time since the Designers notes). Hopefully this will all show up in the 2nd Ogre Book. -HJC] Henry J.
