If you quickly browse to

you will catch a (political) breakthrough in laser anti-missile defense,
the Clinton administration has agreed to accelerate work on the Nautilus
system to defend Israel from ballistic missile attack. (It seems they've
had a bit of a problem in this area lately).  They intend to be field
testing prototypes by the end of next year. (1997, not 2023)

Steve Jackson has once again proven to be a poor predictor of the timing
of future military prOGREss.  Maybe we should open a pool on how long
it'll be before the Mk-I rumbles forth? (hint: it won't take 64 years)
