From: sj@io.com (Steve Jackson) ------------------------------ From: fish Subject: OGRE Minis Questions Well, OGRE Minis finally arrived yesterday, and I've got a few questions about them. Many of these have probably already been asked (and answered), but my copies of Pyramid (Ask the OGRE!) are all 2000 miles from here right now. So: 1) Infantry dismount from GEV-PCs and tanks in overrun combat. Fine. Do they dismount from APCs or are they inside, sitting ducks when the APC gets squashed? Might they survive -- as per stacked units -- or are they simply charred to a cinder? [See Annex 894.45T for the chart of vehicles that carry infatry and the exceptions on each, I mean, see the note towards the lower left on page 34, also somewhere on page 26 the infantry can fire from inside the APC. (Q: What happens to all of these notes when this rulebook is reprinted? A: Geeze, you're EVIL Mr Cobb!)] 2) Can infantry (of whatever sort) ride GEVs of any kind, besides GEV-PCs? [Nope, only the units noted can carry infantry] 3) Can you 'dig in' a HWZ (or other unit, for that matter) for a permanent hull-down position? I don't mean reventments, I mean actually altering the terrain so that the hull of the HWZ is, say, a quarter inch below the 'tabletop', leaving the gun barrel visible. Maybe CEs could do it. [You'll dig a square kilometer ditch?] 4) SHVYs have two separate 1/2" AP guns, as per Ogres, correct? The rules sometimes make it look like either 1 2/2" or 2 2/2". [Yes] 5) Can HW Infantry use their missiles from inside an APC? [By page 26, yes] 6) Wouldn't a Cruise Missile vaporize a lake, or at least do bad things to the waterline? [Nope, go watch the Bikini videos again (the Nuclear weapon against naval targets tests, silly)] 7) I was under the impression (from GEV) that infantry in water were actually _under_water, and couldn't be attacked normally. But Minis would have me believe that they can be attacked normally (pg. 42) in water. If that's the case, they must be above the water. So what are they, swimming? Why can't they fight? If they overrun a GEV which is above water, are they automatically destroyed, as if the GEV had overrun them? [Their powder gets wet and they can't swing their swords efficiently, this really isn't a change from GEV, except now the Marines carry tridents. (Quick: how much for HEAVY WEAPON Marines? ;-)] 7.5) Are infantry riding GEV-PCs automatically destroyed if they are overrun by a GEV while over water? Can they fight? [They will be shot at by the attacking GEVs after they are forced to automatically dismount by the note on page 34] Thanks. fish ><> ----- [You're welcome. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: fish Subject: Ogre Minis in stock/CyberGrunts Revisited In early June (possibly around the sixth) a guy named Ross Jepson posted saying he ran a distribution company (it's in Canada, called TD Imports or something) which had a few. I recently called them up -- I forget their number, but you can always find the message in the archives. They'll only sell to a store, but they've got *19* (!) Fencers in stock. Or, rather, they _had_ 19 -- i ordered two myself. (Along with some other stuff -- they've got a limited selection of other stuff from Ral Partha and DCP, and I picked up ~1/3 of it.) In any case, you'd have to either own a store yourself or wheedle your local hobby shop owner/operator into calling them up, but they're there for what it's worth. -- fish ><> (CyberGrunts revisited) PS -- Infantry can obviously ride Ogres -- CEs have to to nuke them. Obviously, they wouldn't be very _comfortable_ doing so, and probably nobody but the Nihonese or maybe some unusually brave Pansies would actually be willing, but it's definitely possible, should GEV-PCs be lacking. So, how many squads do you think would fit? In my opinion probably at least three, most likely more, depending on the Ogre size. A Mark I would probably hold two, as many as a SHVY, with an increase of maybe 1 per size level from there on out? ------------------------------ From: sj@io.com (Steve Jackson) Subject: Overruning 98Lb weaklings Garth comments: >This does make Light GEVs >>very<< weak against SuperHeavy Tanks. Which is not a bad thing. Fuzzy-Wuzzy often works too well, as is. Regarding miniatures: We're still discussing the question very seriously with both metal and plastic casters. I want it to happen. In the meantime, posting an inquiry on rec.games.miniatures is the best way I know to find old miniatures. Some people have collections they no longer use; some backwater stores still have them. (In Finland a couple of years ago, for instance, I was in a very fine game store that obviously wasn't getting the traffic it deserved -- everywhere I turned there was a ten-year-old collector's item on the shelf at retail price.) Their name is Quarterstaff Games in Burlington VT, @ 802.863.3666 or via e-mail at qstaffepc@aol.com. As far as I recall they are not adverse to shipping things. Tell 'em I sentcha! Johnson" Subject: Looking for OGRE Minitures I've seen a few remaining Ogre minis at a couple of local (So. Cal.) stores. Try Brookhurst Hobbies, Garden Grove, CA or All-Star Games, Diamond Bar, CA... or The Game Castle, Fullerton, CA. I don't remember seeing any Ogres, but they had a number of other vehicles and emplacements etc., and they'll probably do phone orders. kj __ __ ____ ___ ___ ____ kj@primenet.com /__)/__) / / / / /_ /\ / /_ / ------------------------------ From: sj@io.com (Steve Jackson) Subject: Posting of Shockwave units? fish says: I keep hearing tantalizing bits about such fun units as Superheavy tanks and Cruise missiles... alas, the rules don't bloody exist anymore, and I don't have Ogre Minis (yet, it's coming...). So would it be possible for someone to post/upload the stats for the units . . . And Henry says: [Only SJG can do that, and they seem unmotivated to release the material on paper or web. -HJC] And SJ replies: Ahem. Those units are indeed all in OGRE MINIATURES, which is widely available, and the conversion to hexes is not what I would call bitterly difficult. Our Web time and space is going into creating new stuff like Richard's additions to the future history, not releasing for free what we want to force you to buy instead, err, I mean, never mind Though IIRC there were a couple of SCENARIOS in Shockwave, and one of these days we probably ought to either reprint those or post them on the web. Richard, can you add this to your to-do list, someplace? And Chris Camfield says, on a different subject: After I'm done my current PBeM game (of Globbo!!! :-) I'd be interested in trying the Badlands scenario for Ogre if anyone else has the relevant materials. (Badlands is an Ogre scenario from one of the later SJG Space Gamers . . . ) And Steve says: Hey, Richard, put that one on your Web wish list too. Wonder which issue that was in? Long time ago.
