From: aardvark@juno.com ===== Computer OGRE From: Jack Thomas From: sdorr@ix.netcom.com (Scott David Orr) ===== GEV Ideas From: garth.getgen@genie.com ------------------------------ From: aardvark@juno.com To: hcobb@io.com Subject: Ogre/G.E.V. counter mix? Hello, since Sgt. Garth was so helpful with my last inquiry, I'll toss out another question to the mailing list... Does anyone know exactly what the counter mixes looked like in each of the Ogre/G.E.V./Shockwave games? In other words, how many white (Paneuropean, right?) heavy tanks were available for the human player in Ogre? How many G.E.V.'s? Howitzers? Etc. In G.E.V. and Shockwave, how many of each unit type were available to each player? Were the mixes symmetric (both white and black players having exactly the same choices available)? All of my counters from all these games and supplements were long ago stuffed into two simple bags: one for white and one for black. Now that I'm starting to play again, and thinking about designing scenarios, I'd like to know exactly what was "officially" available to players who only owned one copy of the game. Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cobb" Subject: Computer OGRE CIRCA 7000 (a customizable, miniatures-style wargaming system for the computer) has a scenario for it based on OGRE. I don't know what it's like, though, as the registered version of CIRCA 7000 is required to load the customized scenarios. The shareware version, and the scenarios are available at: http://www.nitehawk.com/Boku/ Jack Thomas thomasjl@indiana.edu ----- To: "Henry J. I've looked >at it but it's hard to play.) There are quite a few shareware games along these lines already out there, though I haven't played any personally. Some I've heard of (some of these may be out of date): Robot Battle (Windows 3.1/NT, ftp.cica.indiana.edu, ftp.wustl.edu, and ftp.interaccess.com, at the latter site at least in the directory /RobotBattle), Robot Auto Racing Simulator (for this one an email address -- met7@cac.psu.edu), and Crobots (don't have an address for this one). >From: garth.getgen@genie.com >FUEL-AIR BOMB: The poor man's nuke. > >This area-effect weapon does a Strength 4 attack on ALL units in the target >hex and a Strength 2 attack on ALL units in the adjacent hexes. FABs may be delivered by Howitzers or Missle Tanks (one >firing per game), specified air units (once added to the game!), Ogres as a >replacement to their Missles. FABs cost 9 points (1-1/2 armor units) each. Why would you need a "poor man's nuke" when most of the weapons in the game are already real nukes? Scott Orr ------------------------------ From: garth.getgen@genie.com To: hcobb@io.com Subject: GEV Ideas RE: Why FAEs instead of Nukes?? They make a smaller blast than Nukes, thus less risky to own troops and towns you're trying to capture/protect. Also cheaper at half the cost (they should be 6 points, not 9 points, after I doublechecked the cost of Cruise Missles which are 12 points and not the 18 I thought they were), and don't require a special unit to fire them. RE: Why SEEKING MINES (ROBO-BOMBS)?? Several reasons. First, it's good sci-fi!! Secondly, range -- these don't "just" go out 4 hexes, they go out dozens of hexes until they find a target to explode on. Third, it's neat sci-fi!! Fourth, They do put a unique spin on tactics. Fifth, I would suspect this is something warfare will have in the semi-near future. However, I have gone back to the drawing board and I still need to rethink them. Perhaps you should have counters and be able to fire on them at range 1, perhaps the defense is too high -- but I think the explosive force (attack strength 4) is about right. Garth L. Getgen SSgt USAF ----- [No "special weapons" are required to launch nukes in this game, read the comment about infantry weapons on page 3 of OGRE Minis. "Attack dog" robotic units are being added to the game, but why not simply use the anti-cruise missile rules? (As you make your attack run, every enemy unit within range gets a low-odds attack). -HJC] Henry J.
