Hi, I'm glad to find people still play >>my<< favorite game: Ogre/GEV. A few years ago, I submitted some optional rules to SJG, but they were rejected without being read (something about the format being "wrong" for them to typeset). The rules include: Line-Of-Sight and Reaction Fire, several scenarios and some odds and ends such as Ogre Launched Cruise Missiles. Is there any chance that I could upload this to your page?? I have it in WordPerfect format, but could convert to nearly anything. Please E-mail back to me at: Garth.Getgen@Genie.Com I'll get it faster there. Thanks. ----- [You could try ASCII, I hear it's something of a standard for information interchange. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: spmaloy@probe.net To: hcobb@io.com Subject: OGRE Art. I have been a huge fan of Mr. Jackson for a very long time. My main interests are OGRE and Car Wars. One thing that I am extremely interested in is a BMP, GIF, or JPG of the original OGRE, GEV, and Shockwave maps. Thank You, Shawn P. Maloy ----- [You can still purchase the combined game, I think a reprinting was scheduled to go out at the same time as all those other microgames. (Now the only stuff from Mr Jackson that you can't get, is the stuff he himself owns ;-) -HJC] ------------------------------ To: hcobb@IO.COM From: grendel@cdsnet.net (Nocturnal Proletarian) Subject: OGREs-n-Overruns Well, it has been almost a month now, and nobody has really addressed the issue of the disposable OGRE. Given that 35-50 LGEVs can overrun and kill an OGRE Mk VI, who the hell would ever build something as big and expensive (and apparently ineffective) as an OGRE. I am reminded of the final part of Star Wars (also released in 1977, a mere coincidence? I think not) where 30 snub fighters "overrun" the Death Star and destroy it. Granted, only 3 fighters returned (90% casualties, yikes!), but the day was saved. As a country leader embroiled in a global conflict, the last thing that I am going to do is waste resources on a combat unit that can be eliminated by a slingshot. Just how many LGEVs can be built with the same amount of effort, money and resources as required for an OGRE Mk III? My first guess would be 20 to 25, still a bargain even if you factor in the lost personnel. So, what do we do? Disallow mass overruns? I could see a logic in that- "You want me to do WHAT!?!", I just don't see a large Kamikaze following in the PanEuros. I don't feel that a rule change like that would really help. The tactic is valid, just not expensive enough. Personally, I have always been under the opinion that OGREs were essentially toothless in overruns. My suggested rule changes to the overrun rules are as follows: 6.134.A) The AP guns of the OGRE can be fired at non-infantry or CP targets at regular strength. 6.134.B) The OGRE ALWAYS fires first in every combat round regardless of which side initiates the overrun. Now, overrunning an OGRE requires a much greater allocation of units to achieve the guaranteed kill. Unless this AI routine for an OGRE was written by Microsoft, a cybernetic tank should be just short of unstoppable. ... Great. Now, I've created the UberOGRE. My earlier suggestions make it impossible to overrun an OGRE, not quite the effect I was trying for. How about still ignoring the "D" result on the CRT? After all, the OGRE is supposed to have METERS of BPC armour. And it seems we forgot one little rule, as far as the board game goes. 6.136 ...However, the stacking limit of 5 MUST be observed at the end of the movement phase, even if the attacker must lose units to comply. So, "sitting" on an OGRE is only feasible in the miniatures game. ----- [OGREs have ALWAYS ignored 'D' results at all times. The "Fix" I've been working on involves letting the "self aware" OGREs mix in fire with movement. But I haven't figured out the restrictions or balance yet. -HJC] Henry J.
