=============== OGRE/GEV list, May 11th (Last: April 28th) =============== ===== Death of a Fencer From: The Cobb Unit ------------------------------ Subject: Death of a Fencer From: The Cobb Unit Ogres are not very good at defeating a large mass, finely divided for defense in depth. (Divide and conquer). Take the following table as an example: Expected casualties from an Ogre Main Battery firing at Infantry in the open: Number of Squads stacked Average number lost one squad 1 (4-1 is at least a 'D') two squads 4/3rds (50% both plus 33% one) three squads (Platoon) 4/3rds (33% all plus 33% one) So the main battery is least effective against single squads. I use this in the advanced Ogre scenario by picking up 30 single squad counters. (Use Stinger counters, that's what they are ;-) I only stack my infantry when they are adjacent to the big bad Ogre and about to fire. In Ogre Minis we find a rather extreme version of this in the Paneuropean Fencer (you know I had to gloat at picking one of these up, I'm still working on the paint scheme). The Fencer costs 140 points, but it can be quickly taken down by 20 LGEVs (60 points). On the first turn, the Fencer rumbles up and kills four LGEVs at 10 inches with missiles. (6-1s!) The 16 remaining LGEVs close and fire, eliminating a secondary battery, then they overrun in their second movement phase. In the first overrun phase, the Fencer fires four more missiles (12-1s!), the remaining secondary battery (6-1!) and rams one LGEV ("What a lovely day, I think I'll go run over some Hovertanks.") The 10 remaining LGEVs eliminate the last secondary battery (fire in threes as 1-1s). Thus the Fencer is now weaponless, and the LGEVs only get two more fire rounds, in which they kill two missile racks. At the start of turn two, the Fencer starts out stacked with 10 LGEVs, and they instantly call out an overrun on him and as the overrun party, they get the first shot.
