============ OGRE/GEV list, April 14th (Last: April 10th) ============= ===== Copter choppers From: garth.getgen@genie.com ------------------------------ From: garth.getgen@genie.com Subject: Copter choppers > The problem with using airfoils to support yourself, is what > happens when a nuke is set off somewhere in your general locale? Oh yeah, agreed!! I definitely plan on making helicopter VERY venerable to CRUISE MISSILES. I haven't worked that part out yet, but I figure landed and NOE choppers are "about" equal to GEVs and flying choppers even worse off. Of course, the nuke-blast rules changed in the minitures set, so just figure to add one inch on the blast effect to choppers. > My understanding is that the cruise missiles use > rocket thrust to hover. (Orion effect?) I think "Orion effect" is right ... but that makes it even more of a flying fuel tank and needing even less armor to be lighter. Either way, I think the interception rules for missile are right for missiles and wrong for helicopters. I could see LASERS getting double attack stength against choppers, tho ... which would be another support for Steve's ascertain that the future belongs to tanks and not the air-cav. > From: sj@io.com (Steve Jackson) > In other news - did everybody see the news story about the plan to fry > tactical missiles from 100 miles away, using lasers mounted on 747s? Old news to me. I've seen that before in "Air Force Now" newsreels. But since I doubt they're setting nukes off inside a 747, it can't be an X-ray laser, now can it? Wonder what they're using .... > From: NODUI@worldnet.att.net Welcome to the fray. Got your BPC skivies on?? > 1)When you deploy the Nihon Empire cybertanks, don't make them > rehashes of the Combine/Paneuropean machines. They should have a > completely different design philsophy behind thier machines. Got any ideas? Except for the OLCM, I haven't done a thing for suggesting new OGREs and/or their weapons. For some weird reason, I'm not into the OGRE part of the game ... I like a straight-up tank fight. > 2)More conventional vehicles, such as self-propelled howitzers, > hovertanks, and more types of infantry. Additional infantry types > can include stealth infantry (which has the same equipment a Ninja has > for cloaking), zip infantry (on hoverbikes), and even anti-infantry > infantry (with a second attack against infantry, like > an anti-personnel battery). Hmmm... don't we already HAVE the first two: Mobile Howitzers and GEVs. Or do you have something else in mind??? I've already suggested "stealth infantry": SEALS. They got a mixed review, tho I hadn't seen anything from the "official" powers-that-be. Hoverbikes "could" be interesting ... why are they better than GEV-PCs? The "anti-infantry infantry" was covered by Henry's RANGERS. Also, my kid brother says the MARINES should also get TRIPLE Attack strength during OVERRUN attacks, but only against other Infantry (and Command Posts). > 3)Make Cyberwalkers (from Marc Vensia) Ogre cannon, > so we can have minatures for them. Personal opinion here: YUCK!!! Three "new" types of OGREs are suggested over and over: Flying "OGRE MAGI", OGRE-GEVs and "walking OGREs". In my not-so-humble opinion, the MAGI would be too heavy to get off the ground nor could an air-cushion lift the GEV version. As to "walkers" ... they're more technically feasible than the first two -- BUT all the mechanisms required to allow it to walk (ankle joint, knee joint, hip joint, etc.) will make it too verenable to damage. My vote, if I get one, is to leave this idea to FASA. The only reason these work in their game is they made the basic assumption that "walkers" are somehow better than conventional treaded tanks. The assumption is flat out wrong, of course, but their game doesn't work without it. Garth L. Getgen ----- [The 747 uses a chemically pumped laser, but go read the web page I pointed you to. So we agree that airfoils near nuclear explosions are a very bad idea. Now, the infantry need direct hits with their nuclear weapons to punch through armor, but they only need to setoff a nuke NEARBY to drop a copter from the sky.
