============ OGRE/GEV list, July 28th (Last: July 25th) ============= ===== Cobb Formula on the web. From: Mark Audley ------------------------------ From: andrew.flowers@gs.com (Andrew Flowers (INTERN)) Subject: Cobb Formula on the web. Henry, Thanks for posting the archives for the old GEV list Thingy (92-94, RIP). There's a lot of stuff in there to look at and toy with. But just so you know, you've posted the first five or so issues (Early Nov '92) as gev94nov.lzh... when there wasn't a list in November of '94, as far as I can tell. No biggie, I'm just being anal. (Sorry.) A couple of quick questions: did you ever get any further on the Cobb formula, or did you get demoralized and quit? The stuff in the older archives was pretty interesting; if you've got anything new I'd be more than willing to take a look. Do you know if anything ever came of either the online version of Ogre, or the fanzine that Richard was pushing? I'd assume they just fell into the infamous "Ogre-Pit-of-Promised-But-Never-Delivered-Products", but if anything exists, do you know where I might find it? One last irritating question -- are there any archives from the 'official' Ogre list that (presumably) ran from '94 to '95? Or did that just die unborn, which is why you got stuck with the job again? Thanks. -- Fish Flowers ----- [Oh no, the offical list worked for quite a while and I've got it, but mixed in with my private files. (As I was not officially involved really until I took up the offical list after the mailer that maintained that list went away.) As for the formula, the latest version is on my web-page and has gotten ZIP response. (I suspect that nobody actually reads down to the bottom of these messages and so nobody's ever spotted my URL) I've got the seven most popular units to within one percent of their expected values, so I don't see how I can cook it any more than that. I'm tempted to build up a series of hyperlinked articles by reworking my notes from the old lists. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: GeoHex map set Notes to Seth: (a) But the SHVY has D4 already. (b) Two secondaries. I'd forgotten that the ORP described it as having four... There was also a comment about the GeoHex map set. I think KR may have gotten a few of his prototype run into stores, so it's certainly possible that somebody has a copy . . . but if so, it's so rare a rarity as to not even belong on our "official" Ogre Product list except with many asterisks. Too bad. It was neat. Cloth map, rolled in a tube with little plastic craters and stuff...is that what you saw? Steve Jackson - yes, of SJ Games - yes, we won the Secret Service case Learn Web or die - http://www.sjgames.com/ - dinosaurs, Lego, Kahlua! The heck with PGP keys; finger for Geek Code. Fnord. ------------------------------ From: Mark Audley Subject: Something falling from the air. In response to the Helicopter and Aircraft articles. While I think the self lighting, glass car park theory is very relevant in OGRE, consider the following with regards to aircraft and helicopters. If you are using tactical nuclear weapons then one of the side-effects is an Electo-magnetic Pulse (EMP). I am not an authority on EMP, however I believe that you can "Harden" buildings and armoured vehicles against EMP. Helicopters and aircraft, I believe cannot be "Hardened". The net result would be any attack on helicopters or aircraft would fry their electric's and send them plummeting to the ground. This having been said a friend and I am enjoying using the helicopter counters and rules. Regards Mark Audley ----- [Aircraft can be sealed at least as well againt EMP as ground units. The advantage that GEVs got is that their airfoils and air cushions are more-or-less sealed against shockwaves. If helocopters could deal with supersonic airflows there would already be supersonic helocopters today, right? Conventual airframes would do even worse. (In NOP mode, they'll be underground real quickly. They could of course fly a few thousand feet up and only have to worry about big missiles and lasers...) Note: There already ARE aircraft in the Ogreverse, they just don't visit the battlefields. (Mark I's are airmobile!) -HJC] Henry J.
