============ OGRE/GEV list, Oct 12th (Last: Oct 11th) ============= ===== SuperHeavy Tank damage From: "Garth L. Getgen" ===== "Laser Ogre" From: "Garth L. Getgen" ===== Maps and Mapping... From: Frank Findley ------------------------------ From: "Garth L. Getgen" Subject: SuperHeavy Tank damage I've lost track of where the discussion is on making the SuperHeavy Tank "better", so I hope I'm not repeating some one else's idea. Try this: if the tank receives an "X", roll another die and on a 1 or 2, one of the guns is destroyed, on a 3 or 4 one gun is destoryed AND the tank is DISABLED, on a 5 or 6 the tank is DESTORYED. If the tank is already DISABLED, an "X" kills it, but if it receives a "D" then roll for 1,2 or 3 destroys one gun, whereas 4, 5 or 6 kills the tanks. If the tanks has already lost a gun, then an "X", and/or a "D" if DISABLED, will kill the tank without needing to roll the second die. Also, if it receives a "XX" damage, it's dead. Will that work?? Garth L. Getgen ----- [Why not just use a SP system for the SH? 24 SPs take 12 points of attack strength to destroy, that's about D6. Roll two dice every fire phase it takes damage, if you equal to or less than the damage inflicted that phase it's disrupted and loses a main gun. (Hint: This is the same as it's tread units...) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Garth L. Getgen" Subject: "Laser Ogre" Henry and I discussed this before, when I purposed my idea for the Mobile Laser Crawler, and I feel that the laser is far too powerful of a weapon to put on an OGRE -- it would be too well protected for game balance. Also, if you think about it, a laser system would be too delicate to mount on a unit that is expected to be at the cutting edge of the FEBA (Forward Edge of the Battle Area). My idea was to take two Cruise Missile Crawlers hulls (modified for this system, of course) and mount them in tandem, one to carry the power system and the other for the telescopic laser tower. The MLC can not move with the tower erected and it takes a full turn to raise it. Henry's argument was that such a system would be too bulky to set on the Crawler hull and should take an OGRE-sized hull ... a valid argument to be sure, bu I fear that to simple use the OGRE stats would create a monster unit. I don't really care what you want to say the base hull is, I feel that the stats should be closer to a crawler for game balance. That being said, I think I could buy into the idea of a Ogre-mounted Laser System but at a MUCH reduce range and defense rating (D-2 at best), and perhaps a limited firing rate (once every other turn?) and/or limited to firing at Cruise Missiles only. Be nasty in conjunction with the Ogre Launched Cruise Missiles that I purposed some time ago. Garth L. Getgen ----- [How about a segmented laser system? Four modules, each D2. Number of surviving Roll vs Attack Modules Missiles Strength 0 -- -- 1 12+ 1 2 11+ 1 3 10+ 2 4 9+ 2 Note: The Ogre can never "split" it's fire. It has a single "gun" that degrades as modules are lost. I figure one laser turrent (four modules), two secondaries and six AP on a Mark-IIIB hull. The problem with this unit is that it's too vulnerable to Cruise Missiles! On the other hand, Militia have EXACTLY the same odds against missiles as infantry (Which were called the most cost effective anti-missile units in the Shockwave review) for one sixth the cost. Hey Steve, petition for redress here. Can the Militia be set to have a base roll against Cruise Missiles of 12+ per squad? (That way they're only twice as cost effective as infantry.) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Frank Findley Subject: Maps and Mapping... >From: "Said, Stephen" >We're in the process of finalising the first draft of our campaign rules >for Ogre. (Anyone interested, email me direct and I'll send you a >copy...) > >We're using the old counters and maps. I can't justify the money in >collecting and painting miniatures. Depending on how you are handling your campaign, you might be more interested in vertical standing counters rather than horizontal lying counters. Counters which stand up vertically are easier for multiple people around a table to see. Plastic stands are available from most game stores. Into these stands you can insert posterboard stock paper. This type of design was used in the Deluxe Ogre edition. You should also be able to get matching size hex maps from the game store at a very reasonable price. In the past, I have bought paper maps from game stores, covered them in clear contact paper, and drawn on them in color removable marker. This works very well. The contact paper tends to protect the maps for a long time esp. from drink spills, etc. As far as creating posterboard counters: do they have to be fancy? Couldn't you just write "GEV" on it with the proper movement/attack strengths? One of the great things about metagaming is that it is very inexpensive to expand the set to suit your imagination. I do remember someone in the past having GEV game counters made up on rubber stamps. They weren't pictures, they were simply the name of the counter and attributes. Then when they needed a counter for a game, they simply stamped one. This was especially convenient for those campaign games where they had more then two players, as you could stamp counters with a different color ink for each player. Thanks, Frank ----- [If I had to write the full stats on 180 Militia counters, I'd go mad. -HJC] Henry J.
