============ OGRE/GEV list, Sep 29th (Last: Sep 25th) ============= ===== GEV Subs ??!! From: jimaclem@juno.com ===== Silly Units From: VIPER394@aol.com ------------------------------ From: jimaclem@juno.com Subject: GEV Subs ??!! >From: peletier@grolen.com >Call me old fashion, but the idea of generating submarines in Ogre/GEV >is really silly. Of course, my wife thinks all of us are really silly I know, it is silly just from a land based tactical point of view, but these ideas are for a campaign game I'm trying to put together. The idea is to devise all the units necessary to carry on a war in the OGREverse. I'm not trying to un-purify the tank games. (Hey, I like nuking PBI too!) BTW, my wife thinks we're all silly also. ------------------------------ From: VIPER394@aol.com Subject: Silly Units in reasent times many of us have sugjested new units for ogre only to have them shot down by those who simply say "that would be suisidal." so what in the course of human history thousands of thousands of very stupid ideas have been tried by vertiualy all the worlds millitaries. consider thease points, the worlds first sucsessfull submarines launched by the confederate states navy in 1863 had 3 accidental sinkings with a loss of all crew before they even got close enough to sight an union ship, in 1942 the great winston churchill himself proposed a huge aircraft carrier made of ice so the germans couldn't sink it an in 1915 thousands of british troops climed happly out of their trenches along with socer ball kicking officers straight into the waiting jaws of hundreds of german machine guns. In the strategic sense millitaries will spend years developing systems that may give themselves an advantage for maybe only a few weeks this trend will not stop in the future. so if any one wants to add new units or plase "modern" units on an ogre battlefield I say go for it and give'm hell. ----- [There's a message board on the web site JUST for new units. Feel free to post. Just tried my Militia rules. Advanced Raid, One Militia squad per town, wood or swamp hex plus 10 squads left over and eight light Howitzers. This was a poor deployment. Woods only gives the Militia squad a one in three (instead of one in six) chance of survival when a GEV shoots at it and only if the Militia isn't in running mode (Which cuts it's strike range from two hexes down to one.) A Militia squad per town or bridge hex makes perfect sense, since even the little bridges are worth 12 squads each. (Life is cheap, but infrastructure is expensive!) Hey, the OGRE FAQ (which I have got to refer to in my FAQ and then submit for review) says that this is the place to ask questions, so I've got one: How many Militia squads can ride on top of a CP? Also, can GEV:8.03 be used to cut roads through forest? (trees blocking the road) Finally, does the attacker in Raid get any VPs if the defender stations a Militia in every road hex to blow all the roads on Turn one? (Roads through forest or adjacent to bridges really don't help the defense much here.) -HJC] Henry J.
