I'm Charles McKnight, a Senior Consultant with SABRE Technology Solutions, a division of The SABRE Group. I'm in the process of modeling a Java-based client/server version of OGRE/GEV based on the miniatures rules. My initial version will provide a Gods-eye view of the battlefield to the players, and can be accessed via a browser. I'm in the process of gathering information related to the overall size of the various units to insure proper scale. Since my version is based on the miniature rules, I won't be using hexes (at least at this time although I won't preclude their use in future versions). I've found a reference to the Mark V Ogre being 25 meters long, but this doesn't give me a relative scale for the other units. If you have any information you can share, I'd be interested in seeing it. I've contacted Steve Jackson Games about my efforts, but haven't heard anything from them yet. Thanks for your time. "Gottlos" is a chilling little story about a "transitional" ogre. It is worth looking up. ----- From: "Todd A. (Hey, the movie seems > to be selling the new Starship Troopers game...) Actually, that sounds like a good idea. Battlesuit or GEV would offer more in the way of a human interest story. But, a Mark V 'stalking' the lead character's company would make for a great nemesis. It's got the potential for lots of explosions and property damage that anime does so well. It's even possible to throw a morality spin on the story. Todd Zircher ----- [Hmmm... Maybe the robots would come off more warm and loveable than the human cast. Naww... Never happen. For those of you lucky enough to have a copy, see THE OGRE BOOK for details.) flunky ------------------------------ From: Chris Camfield Subject: The problem of small units It's occurred to me that the (relatively) recent revelations on the effectiveness of cheap units is nothing less than a manifestation of the Fuzzy Wuzzy fallacy: a unit with 2X combat strength is not worth twice as much as two units with X combat strength, since one shot kills it. And, we could now add, the two units are separate targets. I wonder if the fact that this problem is most apparent in the superheavy is because it is (was) the first unit which cost 2 armour units and which fights at close range, compared with the mobile and immobile howitzers. So: are the superheavy and howitzers *really* worth 12 VPs/2 AUs? Or should the smaller units be slightly more expensive (4 VPs instead of 3)? "I've had dinner with the devil, and I know nice from right" (BRJ) ----- [A pile of four light tanks have twice the combined defense strength of a SuperHeavy, if they don't stack too closely. (Actually, if they stack up, they suffer an average of 3.5 VPs of damage from a single four point attack as compared to 6 VPs of damage to a Superheavy with a "normal" defense of four. So the light guys STILL have an advantage, even when piled on top of each other.) -HJC] Henry J.
