============ OGREverse list, Mar 15th (Last: Mar 12th) ============= ===== Alternative OGRE minis From: Jpattern ------------------------------ From: Jpattern Subject: Alternative OGRE minis Henry and other list members, I have an addition to make to the "Ogre Miniatures Without Ogre Miniatures" page: the Reviresco 1/300 Days of Empire line. Days of Empire is a line of near-future armor with a grittier feel than, say, Ral Partha's Battletech line, and therefore much more in keeping with the Ogre universe, IMO. In addition to the usual mix of tanks, hovers, copters, etc., (all of which look very nice, by the way) they also have a line of Monster Tanks. These don't look much like Ogres, but they do look good. There is a nice variety - 16 different ones - with a mix of single and multiple track units, hover units, single and multiple turrets, missiles, etc. I have a few of these, and I really like the sculpting and the fit of the kits. One of the features that I really like is that these are near-future tanks, supposedly built by the US, Russia, China, Germany, England, France, Italy, Japan, etc., and the mini designers have incorporated many of the distinctive features of current-day tanks in these behemoths. Thus, the PRC tanks have the "flavor" of current Russian hardware; the UES Thatcher looks British; the UES Char DeGaul Mk. V looks like something AMX might make in a century or so. And the entire Japanese line looks like something out of a Godzilla movie. I especially like the PRC T480d, a half track with huge wheels fore and aft and treads in the middle. Perfect for that Banana Republic that can't afford an Ogre or Fencer, but still wants a Really Big Tank. And there are other half tracks in the Days of Empire line with the same feel, so your units look like they should be fighting alongside each other, not just a hodge-podge of dis- similar armor units. As I said, I also like their more conventional tanks and hovers. Lots of potential substitutes for Heavy Tanks, Mobile Howitzers, GEVs, Light Tanks, and the rest. I really like the Nanking PRC Heavy GEV - very real-world looking. There's even something called a Mexican Doom Buggy, but, alas, no picture on the website. Still, I may order it sight-unseen, just because of the name. For those with deep pockets, Reviresco also has a line of two truly huge Landships, which have to be seen to be believed. (The prices have to be seen to be believed, too: $75 and $96.80! Ouch!) The Reviresco Days of Empire online catalog, with pictures of most of the minis, is at: http://www.halcyon.com/shamrock/doe/doecat.html And, no, I'm not associated with them in any way, I just like the minis.
