Someone else going "Why can't you scan it in and give it away?" Want to make SURE a product is never reprinted? Just do that to it. Well, yeah. If the LST attacks treads and rolls a 5 or 6 everytime it fires. Attacks against any other components (other than APs) would be at 1-2 odds, very hard to hit. Oh, and don't forget its LLOS, which means an Ogre can approach safely from behind so little as a cluster of buildings or trees. The REAL danger here is that a well handled LST can be used to quickly strip an Ogre of it's AP batteries. Don't get me wrong. I did ask for the feedback, and I DO appreciate it. And yes, I also think the price of 18 VP is a bit cheap. << I'd rather say that lasers are very big and heavy and it takes something on the order of a stripped OGRE or naval cruiser to carry it. (And given the size of a ruby you'd need for such a laser it should be very expensive too... ;-) -HJC] >> A MK I Ogre chassis? Nah, that's TOO big. A superheavy chassis is what I imagine. (Which is why it costs more than a superheavy, but less than a MK I. best, flunky Servitor@aol.com ----- [No, a Mk-III hull, stripped down a bit (Read my website for details). I don't actually see any problems with carrying the laser per-se, it's the power source for these nuclear level blasts that should take up all the room! My reading is that laser towers are immobile because they're tied into the local power grid. (In the first scenario with laser towers, they all stopped shooting after the nuclear power plant was blown to bits.) So my formula is that you take a III-B and replace the missiles with stacks of heavy duty capacitors, then trim off the forward weaponry to mount this big turreted laser. A Mk-V would be less burdened, but nobody ever had a glut of Fives in excess of frontline needs. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Mark Haynes Subject: New Units If it wasn't for the fact that Car Wars is way more succesful than OGRE/G.E.V., I would voice that opinion that a saturation of new units is not worthwhile. First we have a Laser Tank (an interesting idea, wish I tought of it) then next week, OGREs with Laser-proof treads (giving us a new rule about tread attacks, say each tread unit is a D2 now and attacked normally), then the 'New' X-Ray Laser units (back to old tread rules for this one) and maybe a X-Ray proof tread unit after a while. We'd end up with a constant escalation of technology and counter-technology, which is exactly what you'd expect in a real war of any significant duration, but it kinda sucks the fun out a beautifully simple wargame. But then again, it works for Car Wars and Star Fleet Battles (which are no longer simple little games, but at least they are still being marketed/supported) so maybe we're on to something here... ----- [The success of Car Wars was based on the American obsession and practical experience with the autombile, rather than any fine balance in the rules. (If only I'd had a pair of linked heavy rockets in the old chevy last Tuesday...) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Chaz Subject: fonts on the counters The OGRE font can be found at: http://members.xoom.com/acidfonts/ It's listed as being called Computerfont. Hope this helps! * Chaz * "Stress is when you wake up screaming & you realise you haven't fallen asleep yet" ----- From: "Garth L. Getgen" Subject: fonts on the counters RE: OGRE Fonts .... while SJ said it's called "Computer", you might also try "CALCULATOR", "OCR" and "LCD" fonts. One of those has to be close enough, but I didn't look them up to be sure. Garth L. Getgen ------------------------------ From: Mark Haynes Subject: CRT I was re-reading the older posts and saw the one regarding a D8 CRT. It inspired me enough to go rummaging through all my old papers until I found the CRT me and my friends made back in Jr High School. We based ours off of 2D6 and found that it favored Ogre too much, so we only used it in the G.E.V. scenarios without Ogres. The resulting chart gives a greater chance to disable at the most common attack ratios: 1:1 & 2:!. It also made a 1:2 attack a much stronger option. Attack Ratio: Die: 1/3 1/2 1/1 2/1 3/1 4/1 5/1 2 NE NE NE NE D D X 3 NE NE NE NE D D X 4 NE NE NE D D X X 5 NE NE NE D D X X 6 NE NE D D X X X 7 NE NE D D X X X 8 NE D D X X X X 9 NE D D X X X X 10 NE D X X X X X 11 NE D X X X X X 12 NE X X X X X X D or better 41.67 72.22 91.67 100 100 original 33.33 66.67 83.33 100 100 D only 38.89 55.56 50.00 27.78 8.93 original 16.67 33.33 33.33 33.33 16.67 X only 2.78 16.67 41.67 72.22 91.67 original 16.67 33.33 50.00 66.67 83.33 The end results have stayed the same, 1:3 is always a 'NE' and 5:1 is always an 'X'. At the bottom I placed the percentages for the results for this CRT and then the original. As I recall, we had a lot of fun with this, so much so that we made CRTs that better reflected the original one by distributing the results along the bell curve as close to the probability of the OGRE/G.E.V. CRT as possible. So a 4:1 attack would be generate a 'D' result only with a roll of a 7. ----- [What does this do the Ninja? -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Garrett Briggs Subject: Make Your Own OGRE Counters You guys want some counters to help your OGRE games run up to date and with the latest concept hardware, look no further for I have prepared an article just for you that shows you how to make your own cool counters. Here is the direct URL for it: http://www.hovercar.com/ir/ogre/index.htm Enjoy! Garrett ------------------------------ From: Mark Haynes Subject: OGRE-ish Literature I was wondering what other OGRE players thought of the recent 'BOLO' stories being marketed by Baen Books. Has anybody else read any of the series? I know that there are currently 4 collections of short stories and 1 or 2 full length novels. Since the original BOLO collection of short stories was cited as a major inspiration for the game, along with Gottlos which is a good read, I figured that I most of us would be famililar with the new and old stories. Regards, - mark h ------------------------------ [OGREWATCH The Marines are experimenting with a device to detonate incomming artillery shells before they reach them. You see the shell bounces a radar pulse off the ground to tell it at what height to detonate for maximum effect. This gizmo sends back pulses that tell the shell. "Woah there! You're just about to hit ground! Better det now!" The obvious countermeasure is for the shell to send out pulses at random times and frequencies. Note: If you are an agent of a foreign power please forget I just said that. -HJC] Henry J.
