============ OGREverse list, June 15th (Last: June 7th) ============= ===== Tower with a view From: Nyrath the nearly wise From: Martin Gallo From: Patrick Odonnell ===== Soft spot for OGRE. From: "Patrick O'Hara" ------------------------------ From: Nyrath the nearly wise Subject: Tower with a view I'm not sure if they were published, but I had made some drawings of the Ogre tower folded back flat. In some of the illustrations you can see an accordion pleat at the base of the tower. ----- From: Martin Gallo Subject: Tower with a view The real purpose of the tower is to look cool. ----- From: Patrick Odonnell Subject: Tower with a view > [Wouldn't be simpler to simply state that the sensor tower has D4 and > until it is elminated the OGRE can trace LOS from the top of that tower > and after it's lost the OGRE must trace LOS from the weapons in question? T'would be simple indeed. Yet another fine rules option brought to us by the friendly people of the OGREverse list. Thank you. > B): The spelling on some of the last post was so terrible that I just > couldn't bring myself to do it... HEeey, I RESEMBLE that remark. -8) > Anyway, the Ogre towers serving as a snorkel for cooling? Why not? Those electronics which are burried deep inside the hull have to be cooled somehow. > Pardon me, (and I admit I am greatly ignorant of engineering) but, doesn't > water act as a better coolant than air? Absolutely, ... well kind of. Water quickly and efficiently absorbs heat but then it holds onto it really well too. Unless there is some manner of exchange system after the water heats up then it becomes a hinderence and not a help. > A comm tower? Sure, makes sense to me. But I still think one of its > primary > purposes is as a sensor tower. Why not both? The Ogre is most definately a *Big Ugly.* The tower can't be that small and could probably contain a lot of functionality. <...> PJ ----- [My pot boils over. Water is very good at cooling things emersed in it by a process called convection. Submarines have been pumping cool ocean water through themselves to cool off since before they carried nuclear reactors. Which is why you see water bursting from pipes at high pressure whenever a sub is depth-charged. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Patrick O'Hara" Subject: Soft spot for OGRE. Since I was my message did not seem to be read carefully last time let me try from a different angle. What are the critical points of a M1A1 Abrahms Main Battle Tank? There are two, the main gun and the engine compartment. Why do so many Abrahms survive battle field conditions when their so vulnerable. Because anything short of a direct hit on either of these targets will not damage them significantly. (We'll ignore the story a tanker friend of mine told me of a tank commander who did not turn of his targeting computer before telling his driver to turn down a different street and how the main gun attempted to traverse through a building ... No I'm not making that up). At any rate, what is the most common hit on our main battle tank? The treads. Why, because they are easier to damage. Once you do damage the treads you can take your time taking out the rest of the tank. My point about redundancy. Fire for Abrahms is not always called by the tank commander. Often the fire is called from air units that have a much better line of site. If one of these units is taken out, there is likely one to replace them (as one helicopter can call fire for many units). If all available air units are taken out, then fire can still be called by ground troops. If all air power and ground troops are removed from and area the tank can still fire on it's own. How far down this road do you wish to go? If I where a general in this time/genre, I would rely on satellite imagery as much as possible. I would also deploy hundreds of inexpensive drones to "call fire" for the Ogre. Shall we begin to add rules regarding the rotation of the planet, satalight viewing area, D4 drone counters all of the board (remember both side are probably using them), etc. I would argue that this is not what makes Ogre fun. In truth I agree with you in general, though my attacks against an Ogre would be different. If I have access to tac-nukes, why not bury the Ogre and be done with it? An infantry squad could take out an Ogre by surrounding it in tactical nuke fire. as the ground around the Ogre was vaporized, the Ogres own weight would pull it down into the hole. Once it is immobilized it becomes an easy target. Even if the Ogre could "pull" itself out of the hole, it would be stationary long enough that I could target the tower, main guns, etc. There are other similar tactics that have been used against modern armor that could be effective against an Ogre type weapon, but I don't want lots of detailed rules. I guess I like Ogre as a relatively simple, easy to play game. Pat O'Hara Techneex V: (414)405-7348 F: (414)769-0092 E: pdohara@techneex.com ----- [Tanks survive becuase they are stealthy. Everybody who's about to blow a gasket about that comment should first turn to CNN and count all of the Serbian tanks streaming back to Serbia, after more than two months of constant air attack. Surely you don't think the thin armor on the tops of those tanks protected them from a constant bombardment, do you? And even scenario one from the first microgame starts when a tank makes a sudden attack from concealment... -HJC] Henry J.
