============ OGREverse list, Nov 1st (Last: Oct 29th) ============= ===== new units From: "Dominique Sumner" ===== Military Costs From: "William Spencer" ------------------------------ From: "Dominique Sumner" Subject: new units OK, i've been playing around with a few ideas for some new units and hear they are. Light Mobile Howitzer (LMHWZ) (yes I know that someone already submitted one) D1 M0 4/5 1 armor point Its basically the howitzer from the "Iron Mountain" scenario mounted on a tracked vehicle. Light Missile Tank (LMSL) D1 M2 2/3 1/2 armor point I got the idea after looking at the OGRE book. There is an illustration of a small missile firing tank on one of the pages. I'm also playing around with a different Ranger infantry and Heavy Weapons team designs. The current HW team is a little closer to an AT squad than a heavy team. I still trying to work out rules for firing FASCAM (Field Artilery Scatterable Mines) artillery rounds. A few quick questions anyone ever think of adding mortars (infantry and vehicle mounted) to the counter mix? Also when is the "Killing Zone" going to be released? ----- [Aren't heavy weapon squads about the same as modern mortar teams? -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "William Spencer" Subject: Military Costs There's a saying: "Always remember that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder." Military or corporate cost-cutting is just as bad as the cost-bloating...worse, actually. Real-life examples are the M-16 (when it was first introduced), certain wire-guided missiles, Lockheed's recent repeated "oops" with its anti-missile missile tests, and the Challenger problem with the rocket o-rings. What happens when someone tries to "cut corners" on an Ogre? Which is worse, a hardware failure or a software glitch? My money's on the glitch - imagine, the point of a cybertank is to eliminate human pilots. What if an Ogre misinterpreted that phrase? ("...eliminate human pilots...hmmmm") I think this is one reason that those cyber-factories are built like bunkers.... On the other hand, aren't BOPPERs just very cheap cybertanks? Kind of the VW Bug (the old one) of the Ogre world... ------------------------------ Henry J.
