For a GEV to take full advantage of it's strike range, it has to move through almost all of the terrain in it's way, while a Missile Tank can stand back behind a stream or a patch of woods and reach over the obstacle. -HJC] >> another point in favor of missile tanks; CRUISE MISSILES... I just solitaire played "The Day After." I took missile tanks, heavy tanks, and light tanks for the defending armor. The missiles that survived the laser tower (6 of twenty) could shockwave (attack armor units outside of their attack range) heavy and light tanks, but not the missile tanks. The Ogre got wise to this, and only attacked missile tanks with it's guns and let the surviving missiles shockwave the heavies and lights. This brings back some combined arms tactics: missile tanks provide anti-cruise missile overwatch, and the other armor covers their D2 asses...:-). If you KNOW the enemy has no cruise missiles, or if you have a laser umbrella, the missile tank becomes less attractive, however... ----- [Try an advanced OGRE defense of 14 GEV, 6 Missile Tanks and 30 separate squads of infantry. Now the secondary batteries get hardly any advantage from their third attack point and if the OGRE attempts to sneak in along the edge the Missile Tanks will punish it. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "William Spencer" Subject: Calling GEV-PCs Names > From: Steve Jackson > Don't have a final name for either side's yet. > > Combine - Mercury or Roadrunner? > > Paneuropean - Napoleon, or Seguro (spanish for "Reliable")? "Mercury" sounds more official...although the crews might call'em Roadrunner... (meep! meep!) Although "Bradley" does have a ring to it... ----- [Let me see if I understand this. The infantry finally have a transport with better offroad speed than a tank and they're going to call it Roadrunner? "Roadrunner, the coyote's after you, over." -HJC] ----- From: Stephan Beal Subject: Calling GEV-PCs Names Roadrunner sounds appropriate. Though the messenger god's name would apply as well, wouldn't it? I think roadrunner is cooler, though. > Paneuropean - Napoleon, or Seguro (spanish for "Reliable")? Seguro sounds cooler, I think. Napoleon should be reserved for a powerful unit which can "lead the team to victory" (perhaps reserve the name for individual Ogre or a model of Ogre?). ----- Stephan Beal Generic Universal Computer Guy stephan.beal@einsurance.de http://www.einsurance.de "Now I've always been the kind of person who doesn't like to trespass, but sometimes you just find yourself over the line." -- Bob Dylan ----- [The Panzies Jiv-PCs are from Spain? Why not Italy? Hovercraft production doesn't sound too far from sports cars. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "William Spencer" Subject: pronunciation of gev According to Ogre Miniatures, "jev" ("j" as in "just") - hovercraft pilots were called "jev-jockies". "Gev" ("g" as in "gain") sounds a little odd, doesn't it? Depends on your ear, I suppose... ----- From: Servitor@aol.com Subject: pronunciation of gev > [Giga Electron Volt. "I say toMAYto, you say toMOTo..." They will always be (J)EVs to me... Don't like it? Look me up here in Florida and we'll settle this like real gamers... (Besides, I still have the original "Macrotures". It'll be fun!) best, John H. (Servitor@aol.com) ------------------------------ From: "Alan and Carmel Brain" Subject: An odd idea for the Factory States era Ogres > From: "Hunt, Kirk (Tucson)" > That might be their "official" names from HQ, but the troops, and the > self-aware Ogres, would adopt more colorful names like Stormbringer, > Excalibur, Panzerblitzen, etcetera. > > "YOU tell Victor Zulu his name isn't 'Deathsword'..." Exactly. "What colour do you paint an Ogre?" "Whatever it wants you to!" > From: Steve Jackson > It's a thought. What's the song with the refrain "Mayday, this is Echo > Hotel" ? Unknown, but Mike Oldfield's "5 miles out" has: "Mayday Mayday Mayday This is Golf Alpha Victor Juliet IMC Cu Nimb Experiencing great difficulty, Over." "Traffic Controller is calling Victor Juliet, Your Identity I have lost in the Violet Storm, Com- municate or Squawk Emergency." > Jim Kajpust - You're thinking of the Paneuropean design for the GEV. If > that's the kind you want, hang on a couple of months. Sounds like you want > a Paneuropean army . . . Having just had a Deluxe Ogre set delivered to me personally by one Kevin Walker (May his Tribe Increase!) the Combine GEVs are Nice. Very Nice. In fact, that goes for the lot. I was going to order a set through Warehouse23, but with postage, the cost would be over $160 Aus - Call it $90 US. But wages here in Oz are half that of the US. As an aside, and purely as a personal preference, I've never been thrilled with the overscale infantry. So I use another firm's 5-6mm. I won't tell you whose, but they're based in 5's.... The new stands make great field fortifications (trenches) though. Some more things about the Deluxe Ogre set: * No charts for the Fencer. I assume this will be in the set that contains one. * It would have been nice to have a vinyl map that had larger hexes, ones just (barely) big enough to put a Mk V on without overspill. But this would have increased the price etc dramatically, I'm sure. The current one is quite good enough for beginners, and those of us who've played the game for 20 years will probably have something a bit snazzier anyway. But I think a good SJ badged product might be a larger map - or even a GHQ terrain set (I think their hexes are about right) or similar, as an adjunct. ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: No Double Dipping There will be no official dual-purposing of minis (questions of intellectual property and all that), but if the scales are compatible, have fun . . . Steve Jackson - yes, of SJ Games - yes, we won the Secret Service case Learn Web or die - http://www.sjgames.com/ - dinosaurs, Lego, Kahlua! The heck with PGP keys; finger for Geek Code. Fnord. ---- [I guess that's why you've removed the OGRE minis without OGRE minis page? -HJC ;-] ------------------------------ From: VIPER394@aol.com Subject: Keep on Trucking I know that most gamers don't like to have to pay attention to them since they don't carry gunns but every army has them you cant fight with out them. Suport vehicles are there stats for ammo transporters and mine clearing vehicles and ARVs? A raid on a suppy dump could make for an interesting twist on the basic clasic "kill the comand post" especaly if there are mutliple "soft skin" vehicles the ogre has to killin addition to the suply base ---- [OGRE Minis, page 48, Sockwave Scenario "Recon in Force" -HJC] Henry J.
