============ OGREverse list, Feb 6th (Last: Jan 29th) ============= ===== New Ogre maps From: Steve Jackson ===== Look what I've been doing! From: Nyrath the nearly wise ===== OGREverse is not alone... From: Garrett Briggs ===== 3d Models From: Servitor@aol.com From: Inire ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: New Ogre maps Here's a heads-up: I am beginning to rough out a product plan for a new Ogre boardgame supplement. It would basically be nothing but maps and scenarios. You know how the GEV and Shockwave maps geomorph? They fit together on any side. I just may be in the market for a couple more interesting-looking maps that fit the same geomorph pattern, along with some good scenarios to play on them . . . individually, as a pair, or combined with GEV or Shockwave or both. They should not add any new terrain types, and should not look so much like the old maps that they can't be told apart. I might settle for a map that geomorphed only on two or three sides . . . that would let us do a large area of shoreline, for instance. I have no particular budget in mind, and no more specs than the above . . . just sharing my thoughts with those who might be interested. Fnord. ------------------------------ From: Nyrath the nearly wise Subject: Look what I've been doing! Last month I got a Handspring Visor, which is an improved Palm Pilot clone. Marvelous invention, and really cheap too (about $250 for the top of the line model). Interested people should check http://www.handspring.com and http://www.visorcentral.com I also got Quartus Forth for the Visor, which is a development system which allows one to write programs for the Palm/Visor. I've been amusing myself by writing a program for the Palm/Visor, you can see a screen snapshot below. A few notes: [1] I've barely started on it. It will take quite a long while to get it to playtest stage. Right now it doesn't do much more than scroll the map. [2] I am writing it strictly for my own amusement, and will not distribute it. It is not my intent to infring upon Steve Jackson Game's copyright. If Steve Jackson games is interested in it, the company can have all rights to the program and the source code for free ( or for the fee of one dollar if that is required for legal reasons ). Two caveats: [a] It is written in Forth, which is an uncommon language. It might be difficult to find developers who know Forth. [b] I ain't gonna support it. I will happily work with any developers charged with maintaining and expanding on the program, but if any users have trouble with it on their handhelds, don't call me. [3] I am basing the artificial intelligence strictly on the notes in the manual found with the Atari 800 version of Ogre. I've written game AI before, and the notes give enough information to implement it. ----- [Sniped the image, limited bandwidth. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Garrett Briggs Subject: OGREverse is not alone... For those interested in 3D models of OGRE units, or those WORKING on 3D models, let this inspire you... http://www.hovercar.com/ogre/ Don't let Steve's little copyright scare taunt you out of making your own futuristic battle game with simplified rules. Anyone can make up one that is unique and different enough to be a completely different product. And since Steve Jackson Games is FINALLY looking to the internet (welcome to 1998!) you have an opportunity to jump in and have some fun. So release your ideas, release your potential, and release something that allows us TRUE devoted fans a channel for input and, untimately, resolution. We can't wait for the old guard anymore. A paper re-release is quaint, but a browser product that allows us to play together would be nicer. I offered my potential once Steve, the door's still open! Garrett Briggs ------------------------------ From: Servitor@aol.com Subject: 3d Models << Denis Loubet is preparing 3d models for the next set of (Ogre?) projects. >> YES! Denis Loubet RULES!! Anyone who's ever seen his artwork (Car Wars, Ogre and too many old Space Gamers, just from SJG alone), knows what I'm talking about. Man, I'd shell out major bucks just to see a compendium of his drawings from the Ogre universe... HEY! Does he (Denis) have a webpage? Someone tell me the address if so! NEWSFLASH! Sci-Fi-City (in Orlando, Florida) will now be running OGRE Macrotures EVERY MONTH! Every fourth Saturday of the month, Ogre Macrotures will run from approximately 12 noon til 6 pm. For those of you who are new to the newsletter, Ogre Macrotures is a scratchbuilt set of models for playing Ogre in large scale on the floor! It features tank models between 6 and 9 inches long and Ogres over two feet long! All detailed replicas of the units featured in Ogre and G.E.V. Sooo... If you should find yourself in Orlando, FL around the 4th Saturday of the month, drop in and play Ogre with the BIG boys... Oh, yes. Steve, you're still entitled to a rematch from that Gencon game...
