============ OGREverse list, July 2nd (Last: June 22nd) ============= ===== New Edition Counter Mix Question From: Steve Jackson ===== Your form letter is obviosly out of date! From: Steve Jackson ===== Playtest maps From: Steve Jackson ===== DragonCon From: Servitor@aol.com ===== Stealth in the 21st century From: "Hunt, Kirk (Tucson)" ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: New Edition Counter Mix Question >From: "Andrew Walters" >Okay, I got a tournament coming up in a week and a half, so I'm checking >things over and run into a snarl. I recalled the original GEV scenarios >limited the players unit selection to the counter mis, so I checked to see >if that was still true in light of the *much* larger counter mix in the new >edition. Its still there. But now you've got eighteen HVY's of each color >it doesn't mean much, unless the intention was to prevent the player from >selecting more than nine HWZs. > >What's the word, Steve/Henry/Fish, can you have as many LT Tanks as you >want? Hmm. I think we should just blow away the general limit, and say that some scenarios might have specific limits. Sorry this is not a timely answer :-( Oh, and a couple of unofficial announcements - OGRE BATTLEFIELDS probably pushes back a month, to October release. This is purelly a function of the limited number of hours in my own day. OK, look for an announcement of a new edition of the Ogre Book sometime soon. Fnord. ----- [What I'd like to see is a battalion campaign where you take your surviving units through to the next entirely different scenario. The combined "Breakthrough" and "Raid" scenario gave a taste of this. I suppose that the best way to start on this would be a "lone wolf" OGRE deep strike mission, where the OGRE attempts to avoid as many of the defenders as it can to get off the current map and onto the next scenario with as much of itself intact as can be managed. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: Your form letter is obviosly out of date! I think the Ogre Reinforcement Pack is now out. At this point, you should maybe just put in the URL for the products page, rather than trying to keep up. Is there >going to be NEW material? SHOCKWAVE and OGRE REINFORCEMENT PACK are 98% the same as they used to be. OGRE MINIATURES, when reprinted, will have many changes. THE OGRE BOOK, when reprinted, will have some old and some new material, though even much of the "new" material is already on the website. Everything else will be new. If so, can somebody please review it? -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Servitor@aol.com Subject: DragonCon << We're palnning to do this panel at DragonCon - *maybe* Friday, in the same room as Macrotures, about 6pm between games. >> Ooohhh.....Photo Op time! (You, sandwiched between two MK Vs). ATTENTION EVERYONE: Last moment advisement (sorry Henry, feel free to beat me if you're at DragonCon) Ogre Macrotures final schedule is... FRIDAY: 1pm - 5pm, 6pm - 10pm and 10pm - 2am. That's twelve (12)!! hours of OGRE/G.E.V. (With a dinner break from 5 to 6) This should be enough to satisfy anyone. Scenarios? "Get the CP" and "Ceasefire Collapse" will be the ones I plan to run, but I DO have enough G.E.V.s to run the "Raid" scenario if there is demand for it. Please note that while I will have PLENTY of models for this event, model makers who plan to attend should feel free to bring their own! The models are in 1/35th scale (so, for example, a HVY tank is roughly 8 inches long). Since we do not have any LT. GEVs, GEV-PCs or MHWZs, these would be excellent models for someone to bring! Our own models are pretty faithful reproductions of the OGRE minis line (just check out the OGRE MINIATURES book) which are (mostly) based on artwork from Winchel Chung and Dennis Loubet. Any of those three sources will give you what you need to plan out a model. Not enough time to get them ready for this DragonCon? There's still Gencon (our next stop) and next year's DragonCon... Best, flunky (John Hurtt, Servitor@aol.com ----- [Go out to conventions?!? Actually they only unchain me from my desk once a week or so when the nice people from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Geeks come snooping around. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Hunt, Kirk (Tucson)" Subject: Stealth in the 21st century >Now I have to start out saying that I have my doubts about making any >moving object the size of a house stealthy. Someone is going to SEE >something that big and moving, and you can't very well shoot everything >that sees you - you will leave an obvious trail. That said, I don't >suppose it is any less credible than a war where nuclear weapons are >exchanged often and in large numbers, lasting for YEARS.( Read that I >think the whole premise of the game is nonsense, but it's lots of fun >anyway). Think B-2 Bomber or F-117 Fighter. Of course you see it, with the "naked eye," but not with "electronic eyes." By putting in a LOT of electronics and "stealthy" design features, you have an object the size of a house that you STILL have to look for, instead of have a radar system ring a bell and mark it for you. Realize that there are SERIOUS cost, survivability and performance compromises to make a stealth unit. That's why we haven't converted all Realverse air combat units to a stealth format... And likely never will. Smaller OGREverse armor units would yield less payoff than an OGRE, so it just isn't done...often... Micronukes and other long war factors: I like to think of the Micronukes as having very short half-lives (minutes or seconds), making them effectively potent conventional munitions. On top of that, the materials and systems of the Last War are all very interchangeable and recyclable. Thus looting the battlefield is an option. It simply becomes the middle ages, with units that move at 50 MPH and shoot over the horizon... Kirk Hunt ------------------------------ Henry J.
