From: "Wray Odom" ===== The "NEW" Shockwave From: "Hunt, Kirk (Tucson)" ===== The problem of balance From: Todd Zircher ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: DragonCon We're palnning to do this panel at DragonCon - *maybe* Friday, in the same room as Macrotures, about 6pm between games. And maybe not - we'll see. The Return of OGRE OGRE was first published as a Microgame in 1977. Now, in 2000, it's being re-released in the original form . . . and some new ones. Steve Jackson talks about the process of turning a board game into a roleplaying game (and shows off GURPS OGRE), discusses the trials and tribulations of miniatures productions, displays unpublished material, and takes questions about the future of OGRE. Steve Jackson - yes, of SJ Games - yes, we won the Secret Service case Learn Web or die - http://www.sjgames.com/ - dinosaurs, Lego, Kahlua! The heck with PGP keys; finger for Geek Code. Fnord. ------------------------------ From: "Wray Odom" Subject: Stealth in the 21st century I was looking over Chris Sheild's excellent Ogre fan cite, and among other things I found description of a "Dark Horse" "stealth" Ogre. I also remember way back the description of the "Ninja" stealth tank. Now I have to start out saying that I have my doubts about making any moving object the size of a house stealthy. Someone is going to SEE something that big and moving, and you can't very well shoot everything that sees you - you will leave an obvious trail. That said, I don't suppose it is any less credible than a war where nuclear weapons are exchanged often and in large numbers, lasting for YEARS.( Read that I think the whole premise of the game is nonsense, but it's lots of fun anyway). But anyway I digress, my real question is this; if an OGRE can have stealth, why can't armor units. For example, I think a flight of stealth equipped LGEV's would be great for reconasance behind the lines. Or perhaps some heavy's equipped with stealth making a surprise assault on a supply depot. I would be interested in other's opinions. Also how much do you think stealth should increase the value of a unit? Can MI get stealth (commndos?) or would it add too much to the weight of the suit? What do you think? Wray Odom ----- [There are stealth suits in Battlesuit, see my page for the translation into GEV terms. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Grogan, Paul" Subject: Error found in GEV & other stuff I'm suprised this hasn't been spotted before. I played teh Raid scenario last weekend, the OGRE version, it says the defender gets an OGRE Mk V in town hex 1409. Well, the town hex is 1408! I've played the game for years and never noticed it before. P.S: If anybody knows who I should send comments about the playtest maps. There's a blatant error on one of them where the roads don't match up and I've tried mailing a few people but not had any reply. P.P.S I've still not had an official answer on the underwater superheavy's question. Can they go under or not? Paul Grogan UK ----- [Superheavies have been fordable since long before they were formidable. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Kirk Johnson" Subject: long distance GEV Sir, My National Guard unit is going to lovely Kosovo sometime this November for 7 months. Supposedly we will live like prisoners behind row upon row of barbed wire, lest any American casualty threaten our long term interests in that part of the world (Whatever the hell they are!) Regardless, I am very interested in playing GEV over the internet. Trouble is, I'm an old geezer (I first bought OGRE at the age of 12 way way back in '77), and don't know much about this computer stuff. Who do I contact to get more (any) info. Your column is great. I ordered my GEV set last week, and next paycheck intened to buy Shockwave. Long Live Pan-Europe(what a joke), Richard Lee Johnson ----- [Just teach them to dislike the French and Germans (shouldn't be too difficult :) so their grandchildren can give shelter to a badly damaged Ninja OGRE a century from now. (Hmmm.... I feel a story idea coming on.) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Wray Odom" Subject: Your form letter is obviosly out of date! Not only did your form letter NOT answer my questions, it is obviously WAY out of date. SJG is again reprinting "Ogre/GEV", "Shockwave", etc.. Also, "Killing Zone" is no longer mentioned on the official website; I can only guess that it will not be out "real soon". I am pleased to note that a new board game supplement will be available called "Ogre Battlefields". I relly would appreciate the questions in my previos e-mail to be answered, or an e-mail address to someone who could. Also from a marketting stand point it might be a good idea to revamp this silly form letter that offers misinformation and information of little value to anyone already familiar with the game. Respectfully (honestly I am) Wray Odom PS Thank you for sending some reply, I just wish it would have been of more value. ------ [Oh I just run the list (occasionally), real answers must come from Austin. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Hunt, Kirk (Tucson)" Subject: The "NEW" Shockwave I thought the "NEW" Shockwave was a reprint of the older material. Is there going to be NEW material? Kirk ----- [There are some changes (the new Superheavy being the most game shaking) and a lot of old errata that was cleared up years ago. Gimmie a few weeks to sharpen my pen and I'll let you know what I find. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Todd Zircher Subject: The problem of balance > 2. Militia are absurdly useful. If they really bother you, introduce a house rule where militia units can be thrown from high speed units. Just to pull a rule or two out of thin air, say that any vehicle (except a GEV PC) that travels 4 or more hexes per turn has a 1/6 chance of ejecting (and thus destroying) the militia unit. This happens during movement and before combat. Additionally, if the vehicle is moving four or more hexes per turn and executes more than a 60 degree turn, an additional roll is made per snap turn. Use, lose, or abuse as you see fit... -- TAZ ----- [That's better than they get treated in OGRE Minis! Personally, I'd accept Militia that couldn't ride on top and needed covered transport. -HJC] Henry J.
