If we are going to have names, they should be believable and evocative . . . >> The Paneuropean's main manufacturing centers seem to be located in the Ruhr/Rhine area, so German designations would logically be dominant. But (it is inferred that) the Vatican wields much of the political power, therefore Latin and Greek names seem likely too. What about French? Spanish? Well, here's a few suggestions. Some are made up, others are simply extrapolated historical designations. Paneuropean Classes Unit / Providence French German Vatican SHVY: AMX-95 StormKampfWagon IV Centurion HVY: AMX-80 PanzerKampfWagon X Spartan MSL: Trebuchet Jagdpanzer XII Ballista LT: AMX-55LT PanzerKampfWagon VII Corinthian HWZ: Cannonade StormKrueger III ?? NOTE: Ogre Macrotures at Sci-Fi-City has been temporarily discontinued while we make major renovations to the store and gaming area. I will write as soon as I can reschedule them with confidence. However, you can still come in and check out the cool models... best, flunky Servitor@aol.com ----- From: Patrick Odonnell Subject: Names for Ogre armor units There seems to be a definate trend towards using Teutonic names when it comes to naming Paneuropean armor. My two cents worth (or Pfennige since I am currently living and working in Germany) on this subject are that while it sounds really KEW-el and reflects the fact that Germany currently guides continental European policy by the pulling of some pretty hefty financial strings there is also going to be a heavy Franco (and then later on in the timeline Anglo) influence in the naming of fighting vehicles with perhaps a smattering of other culteral names as well. The "Culteral" thing over here is taken a LOT more seriously than in the States. My guess is that the powers that control the Paneuropean block at any given time would "grant" a few culteral names to military vehicles in order to sooth a plethora of nationalistic pride. Germanic (Deutsch / Austrian): JFYI, "Panerzkamfwagon" is wrong Panzerkampfwagon is correct. And, it means literly "Armored-fighting-wagon" or armored car. And, is not used in refering to tanks. The word "Panzer" literaly means armor and "Panzerung" means the state of being armored. The Germans refer to tanks using two words "Panzer" (meaning they just call it armor) or "Tank" whereby the "a" is pronounced like you would pronounce it in the English word "Raw." Another interesting tidbit "Panzeranzug" literally means "Armored Suit." Ok. My little German lesson / rant is over. You people said you wanted names so; Panter: "Panther" (the "a" pronounced as above and NO "th" sound) Tiger: "Tiger" (the "i" pronounced like an American long "e" as in "a glass of tea" or ~ "Teager") Kinigstiger: "King's Tiger" (or what is constantly refered to by American historians as the "Royal Tiger.") Of course, the above three names have a very definate historical context tied to them. Whether or not they should be used is up to the game designers. Leopard: "Leopard" ( not "Lepard" but "LEO" as in the astrological sign and "PARD." This is the name of the current series of German armor followed by a Mark designation. FREX, Leopard Mk. II) Jeager (Jaeger is a correct alternative spelling) : "Hunter" Kopfj=E4ger : "Head Hunter" T=F6tentanz : "Death Dance" (The problem here is that there is currently a "Nova" in White Wolf's Abberant game that goes by this name.) Orkan : "Hurricane" or "Gale force storm." ( the "a" pronounced as above and the "k" pronunciation being very hard and pronounced. Almost as if you're spitting it out.) Francophile: Trebuchet: "Trenchbucket." Tank type. Mistral: "Strong cold wind" GEV type. I don't know of any others. I honestly think that there are going to be a few French names mixed in. Even if they are just a handfull of GEV and other vehicle types. Dutch: Ajax: (Pronounce both "a" letters as the German above and the "j" as a "y" or ~ "Ayax") a swift and powerful Mid range-GEV type. IOW, lots of leg and not all too little punch. Irish: Shamrock: Light scouting GEV. Shellelagh: "Irish cudgel" as "Ajax" above. (Say, you know what? Maybe, they even come from the same "joint venture" production facility and are basically the same GEV but with different name designations and minor mission specific modifications.) ---------------- _... Combine GEV a "Swiftwind."_ How about "Whirlwind" or "Devilwind" (We are talking about the cultural influences of ALL of north America, right? ---------------- > ----- > > From: Mike Naylor > Subject: Names for Ogre armor units > _ ... Actually, looking up at what you wrote, I like the idea of the PanEuropeoans using the PzKw Mk MXIX Fencer - Panerzkamfwagon As to spelling see above. ... always had a nice militiristic and metallin ring to it._ Maybe. But, if you're using current paradigm thought then it would have wheels, a light weapons system, and carry troops. > ------------------------------ _... but if somebody convinces me a tank design is STUPID . . ._ The "hammerhead" thingy is correct. The tank would have trouble traveling "Over land." As to whether a given tank design is "Stupid" I would refer your critic to the history books. When it comes to tanks people try EVERYTHING. Have a good one everybody, PJ ----- From: SRKOALA@aol.com Subject: Names for Ogre armor units > If so, got any suggestions? If we are going to have names, they should be > believable and evocative . . . I'd go for it. The only name that I can think of is for the Combine LGEV: Raptor. You might even want to have national modifers to reflect difering thoughs on what a vehicle should be. -Stephen ------------------------------ From: "jim clem" Subject: New OGRE pages, OGRE 2200 Hi all. I've begun uploading my material for a future (ie after the Factory States) OGRE, OGRE 2200. I managed to find a reason for the factory megaplexes to build some more OGREs. Its under serious construction (aren't they always?) but please go there and send me your comments/flames/micro-nukes. Thanks Jim C http://www.geocities.com/travmind ------------------------------ From: Todd Zircher Subject: Light Tank > For inspiration, take a look at what the USA is looking at for a > next generation light tank: > http://knox-www.army.mil/dtdd/armormag/nd96/6fletch96.pdf Given the reality of DEWs in the OGREverse, that's one less stumbling block. Toss in BCP firing rail guns or smarter/smaller ammo and you can fix the ammo feed problems, too. I particularly like the look of the Swedish UDES-19 as a light tank.
