============ OGREverse list, Nov 11th (Last: Nov 6th) ============= ===== Ogre Minis vs Ogre/GEV From: "Andrew Walters" ===== Ogre Book - any ideas on what's in it? From: "Andrew Walters" From: Trey Palmer ===== Free Maps From: Stephan Beal ===== The ongoing campaign From: john murdoch robertson ------------------------------ From: "Andrew Walters" Subject: Ogre Minis vs Ogre/GEV The number of tread units are *not* the significant differences between these two completely differnet games. Cruise missiles are completely different. I can't remember which is which, but in one version you can strip an Ogre to near uselessness with three or four cruise missiles, but in the other a fully armed Ogre can shoot down missles far enough away not to take serious damage. Also, the spillover/multiple attack rules are different. Its pretty hard to min/max in the minis version. I don't look at them as a progression or evolution, but as seperate games. Each has definitely benefitted from the growth of the other, but they're not two version of the same thing. Andrew ----- [I sent some suggestions to Steve about incorporating some of the defending unit type adjustments from the table in Shockwave rule S4.04 into OGRE Minis, but nothing seems to have come of it. I guess I'd best add in the Shockwave adjustments into my suggested changes webpage and hope I get sufficent forewarning of the next OGRE Minis edition that I can point it out to him at that time. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: "Andrew Walters" Subject: Ogre Book - any ideas on what's in it? I surmise from a plethora of sources, in order of interest: New Ogre story by SJ New version of the Tank: Past, Present, Future article (or whatever that title is) Never before seen units and scenarios A couple of cartoons by yours truly :) Miscellany from the old Ogre Book, the Ogre list, the web page, and Pyramid that we already have That's enough, but its *128* pages, whereas the original was only about 40. So there's at least *80* pages of new material, and I can't imagine the list/web/Pyramid stuff we've seen could comprise even half that much. I'm guessing this will give non-RPGers a chance to get some of the great artwork from GURPS Ogre, and I'm guessing various specifics about the vehicles will crossover as well. And the cover is extremely cool, but I suppose that's no reason to buy the book. I can hardly wait. I'm going to nab one first chance I get, and will certainly review it here. Andrew ----- [You forgot one important (to me at least :-) article from the Space Gamer (That's not only been rewritten, it's been recalculated.) -HJC] ----- From: Trey Palmer Subject: Ogre Book - any ideas on what's in it? > [A lot of classic material that's now out of print, and some > interesting new stuff. Darnit, I was hoping for counters for things like the HGEV, the missile GEV and others. Any chance of this? ----- [Hey, I asked for counters, but apparently they were rejected due to cost considerations and the bias towards minis. Speaking of minis, check out what's on display at: http://www.sjgames.com/ogre/ You don't have to tell me that's a Combine LGEV. Anything with tail fins that garish has got to be a product of Detroit. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Stephan Beal Subject: Free Maps Hello, fellow Ogre/GEV fans. Tired of playing on the same old maps over and over? You can download a variety of freely-available maps from the Free Generic Wargame Maps page: http://gwm.rootonfire.org Most of them are designed for GEV and/or Ogre. Submissions are welcome, but it can't currently be done online (email them to me, or put them someplace that I can download them from). I'll add online submission (hey now, get your mind out of the gutter) support once enough people bug me about it. (Mr. Cobb: Can you _please_ take a look at the GEV-alike and Shockwave-alike maps at http://gwm.rootonfire.org?category=4 and let me know if those are too close to the original maps to be made freely available? If so, please let me know and I will remove them immediately.) ----- [Yeah, even though those two are missing critical elements from the originals, they do copy enough stuff hex by hex to be derived works and you'll probally need to ask Steve before leaving those on your pubically available pages. Technically, you need to add in the missing parts and work on things like showing the roads over the trees. Do you have any scenarios for these maps yet? -HJC] ------------------------------ From: john murdoch robertson Subject: The ongoing campaign I have been working out a campaign system for Ogre/GEV, but so far it has been exteremly raw and more than a bit unwieldy. I was wondering is there a campaign system out there that includes reinforcements, territory and/or income/production values? I would also like to know are there any 'historical' scenarios or mini campaigns out there. Murdoch ----- [Um, unless you want to lay out all of Europe on your table, (The English channel is about 100 inches wide in game scale), why not focus on either an operational compaign or an isolated settlement after the fall of man. You could run that as a series of interconnected scenarios, with a certain amount of repairs and reinforcements between scenarios. If you really want to know how long it takes to build something, check out GURPS OGRE. It's got all sorts of facts, like that each Missile Tank missile costs as much as a squad of standard infantry battlesuits. (My advice is to spread out and make it too costly to get all you grunts.) -HJC] Henry J.
