The damage sheet for the Ogre III-B in the Iron Mountain scenario should have 4 points of damage, not three. Other than that, looks like you did a fine job of proofreading! And please read the first Keith Laumer "Bolo" book if you don't recognize the quote! Matt ----- [I think that's that other group. The first story had a mission, but the first scenario had a target... -HJC] ----- From: "William Spencer" Subject: Ogre Motivation Wow, that was far more than I expected to receive. (That last one, about the tank with the cute fenders, was WAY too much than I wanted to see...) Very interesting, though. Food for for thought. I need to start an Ogre campaign some year; some of this just begs to be inflicted on players. ("Uh, Ogre GRY-059? That last transmission...were you joking, or...?") Regarding motivation for Ogres: I think it depends on the empire. The Nihonese, for instance, simply raise their developing Ogres with the bushido mindset (which, as GURPS Ogre explains, works perfectly with an Ogre). That Kumo cyberwalker "goes over the top" for the honor of the Emperor. Banzai! Another way to motivate Ogres is to set the basic structures of their brains in a certain way. Douglas Adams explained this best in, I believe, "Mostly Harmless", the fifth book of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy. Robotics programmers in his universe figured out that to get a robot to do something, you don't have to do the tedious and complex work of programming how to do it into the robot's brain; simply make the robot LIKE completing the designated task, and it'll work out the rest. So, for instance, a robot was constructed that would like herring sandwiches. When a herring sandwich was placed at its feet, it would think, "Ah! A herring sandwich. I like herring sandwiches." and bend over and scoop up the sandwich. Because of the way it was built, it would promptly drop the sandwich at its feet...so it would look down and think, "Ah! A herring sandwich..." etc. (The sandwich was never consulted as to what it liked.) Admittedly, this is a rather stupid robot, but the principle still applies. Oh, wait. I think I see problems in programming a battleship-sized nuclear tank to "like" causing property damage and human casualties. Hmm. The Hitchhiker's series gives plenty of other good examples of robotic personalities and their interactions with humans and each other - read the books if you're interested. William Spencer williamspencer@hotmail.com ----- From: patrick.odonnell@materna.de Subject: Ogre Motivation > Why do Ogres fight? Why do snakes bight or scorpions sting? Survival's first dictum - tis the nature of things. Self aware ogres are put into situations which demand they kill or be killed and react accordingly just as humans have since the beginning of written history and most probably since before that. (Why do we humans fight? If all the *little guys* on all sides just put down their weapons and either refused to follow the orders of, or even better, ganged up and destroyed those who try and compel them to fight. Wars would be a thing of the past. When was the last time you watched, CNN? Making war, as a means to an end, is all the rage and has been for quite some time. It is just the way things are.) Normal Ogres follow their programming. Self-aware Ogres react to their baser instincts for self-preservation. Would the occasional self-aware ogre *Go over the hill? * Yes. Said ogre would then be hunted down and *Taken-Care-Of* (Since ogres always take care of their own) by her/his brethren. Then, that ogre's name would be a cuss word only associated with shame and disgrace in the minds of all other ogres, regardless of national affiliation, for many generations. Self-awareness has its drawbacks. SUCKS!!! Doesn't it? Best, Pat ----- [Do they die? If they can pass on their memes to their brothers, isn't defense of the hive their only struggle for survival? Oops! Wrong series there, but it would be fun to consider a conflict between self-aware and colony drone OGREs. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: webmaster@sjgames.com Subject: [sjgames-illuminator] New T-Shirts! SJ Games Daily Illuminator ( http://www.sjgames.com/ill/ ) January 18, 2001: New T-Shirts! -------------------------------------------------------------- We've got two great new T-shirts, both available only from Warehouse 23. I'm delivering a personal gloat about these: The Ogre T-shirt ( http://www.warehouse23.com/search.cgi?keywords=ogre+t-shirt ) is a reprint of the very limited edition one that Richard Meaden did for us years ago. Screaming green and orange on a black shirt. I don't know what it looks like on your screen, but on mine, the image is completely lame and washed out compared to the thousand-decibel loudness of the real thing. The Goth T-shirt ( http://www.warehouse23.com/search.cgi?keywords=goth+t-shirt ), on the other hand, is brand new. In modern spiky type, white on a black shirt, it asks a tough question: If you're really a Goth, where were you when we sacked Rome? Let me know if you get a good answer. -- Steve Jackson ( http://sj.sjgames.com/ ) ----- [Inventing Gothic ligature. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Steve Jackson Subject: Ogre T-shirts >From: "Christopher Weuve" >Subject: FYI: Ogre T-shirts > >FYI, one of the litmembers on SFConsim-L offered this observation: > >> Ogre T-shirts. > >> I have this wonderfully bizarre mental picture of a Mark V wearing a >> t-shirt.
