(Russki: Squall). Rocket powered torp that uses cavitation to get its speed up to 200 knots or so. http://www.newscientist.com/features/features_224813.html ----- From: Todd Zircher Subject: Torpedos at GEVs The Soviets developed a rocket powered torpedo that uses part of the exhaust gas to form a friction reducing bubble around the torpedo. Its projected top speed was under Mach 1. Only a wing in ground effect vehicle (another Soviet invention) could hope to out-run it. -- TAZ ----- [And the thing was so noisy that it couldn't track anything underwater and so you aim it where you think the target will be, which is useless against high agility hovercraft. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Stephan Beal Subject: OGRE Size > In Ogre minis and GURPS, it is stated that the Mk I is 50% larger than a > Combine HVY tank. I assume that each dimension is increased by 50% with the > mass of the Ogre being 3.375 times that of a HVY tank. If the mass only > increase by 50% than the linear dimensions scale up 14% which makes a wimpy > looking Mk I. The rules do say that the Mark I was basically little more than a robot-brained heavy tank. > Replacement of GEV river bridge with a dam. See http://www.wanderinghorse.net/gaming/ogre/optional.php for my own rules on this (granted, they are under-playtested). ----- Stephan Beal "Now I've always been the kind of person who doesn't like to trespass, but sometimes you just find yourself over the line." -- Bob Dylan ------------------------------ From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Mark II secondaries Now that all of the old Ogre stuff has been reprinted (and a lot of original stuff as well...:-) ); I have a question: WHAT is the defense value of a Mark II's secondaries -- two, or three? I personally prefer two, as it fits in well with the concept of the Mark II; i.e., an obsolescent vehicle that is sold to client states (not the mention the blurb in "Operation Icepick" of the Mark II being underarmored). Perhaps a Mark II with defense factor three secondaries should be called a "Mark II-B"? Seth ----- [In GURPS OGRE, the Mark II has exactly the same armor on all of its weapons as any other OGRE. Its main hull is no better armored than a Mark I and this is shown in The OGRE Book (2nd Ed) on page 101. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Sumnerd1234@cs.com Subject: Midnight Run Scenario I seem to have left out one "minor" detail when I sent it to you. I left out the info on my version of a Ranger infantry unit. So here's the revised version attached to this. ----- [OK, updated. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: William Spencer Subject: Ogre LARP >But you can't just leave us with a driblet like that and not elaborate. An >Ogre LARP? I just HAVE to see the rules for THAT! Live Action OGRE? The mind boggles... --- (A number of gamers are gathered out in a field somewhere.) Referee: "INCOMING!!!" Veteran Players: The New Guy: "Huh?" Referee: "Right, you're dead." The New Guy: "What?" --- Or, maybe you play tank/GEV crew...set up some chairs, sit down, and go "vroom!", scooting around on the floor at high speeds. The Ogre player throws large pillows at you. "I can't shake him! He's too fast!" "Red Two, calm down!" "I'm hit! I'm hit!" "Red Two! Noooo...." --- Or, maybe you play the Ogres... 1.) Procure a large cardboard box, with holes cut in strategic places around the surface. 2.) Kneel on the ground. 3.) Place the box over yourself. 4.) Crawl around, making tread noises. Throw rocks at anyone who comes near you. (This is actually an adaptation of an old "Space Gamer" number, "Turtle". Not as famous as the SJGames classic "Kung Fu CB Mamas vs. the Motorcycle Aztec Wrestling Nuns", but still fairly popular, I hear.) --- Somehow, Ogre doesn't strike me as a stunning live-action game. Maybe if you play members of the Command Post crew, sending men out to die, or rig up appropriate computer simulators to be "vehicles"... ------------------------------ From: "Techpriest" Subject: Infantry Modelling/Painting Question and Idea >Question: I'm putting together some of my infantry in 1s and 2s to >make change, since the bases are available seperately and cheaply >(yay, SJG!). So I'm wondering - If I put one guy on a base, what do >I fill the other two rectangular holes with? I'm using spackle. >I'll let you know how it works out. If someone has a better idea, >let me know. Answer (one, possibly not the best): I did the same thing and used Testors Contour Putty. It is in a gray tube, same as their model glue, and costs about $1US. If it is fresg it will come out like gray toothpaste, just fill the holes, let dry and sand/file/scrape to shape. If it's an old tube like I have it might have seperated and come out as an oil and a glue. Mix them on paper then apply or take it back to the store. As for the suggestion in the book to not glue them, if he kidding or does he just want to keep selling more infantry as we lose ours? >Idea: When putting together some of the 1s and 2s I'm going to fill >some of the empty area on the base with debris or with another >infantry unit with its base cut off, lying on the ground. Could be >cool. Photos will be posted. Beneficent SJG has made infantry so >cheap, I may make up some 0s! I used some scraps from the minis to make walls, rubble, etc on the bases. Since I did not glue the fins to the GEVs in my Deluxe Ogre set (way to hard I think) I glued one down as a piece of rubble. I left one hole empty and painted it brown while the rest is green. The idea was to make a foxhole. Everyone, even me, says it's a grave. Not sure that was a good idea but it's funny. >It would be neat to glue a baseless infantryman to the side of the >CP, if the Scale weren't wrong. He'd be standing guard outside the >door. They are not to scale, but that's OK. I have some infantry from GHQ that is to scale and they are to small to paint or even see. If you want to do some things like put people on vehicles or CP then check other companies. Just about any human figure, modern or sci-fi, looks the same at about 1/285th scale. >Another thought: I'm going to put some figures on a different base >to portray engineers. What should I use? A big washer? I would use the same base and just paint them different. Maybe give them all yellow heads. Or paint the ground brown if the rest have green ground. Washer will work but the bases that SJ puts out are the best I have seen for infantry of that size, IMHO. ----- Subject: Re: Infantry Modelling/Painting Question and Idea From: Kevin Walker > Question: I'm putting together some of my infantry in 1s and 2s to > make change, since the bases are available seperately and cheaply > (yay, SJG!). So I'm wondering - If I put one guy on a base, what do > I fill the other two rectangular holes with? I'm using spackle. > I'll let you know how it works out. If someone has a better idea, > let me know. There are several things you can use (spackle is probably fine too). There are a variety of modelers putties out there that will work. Another item is white glue which might take two applications to account for the shrinkage that usually occurs - this one works really nicely if you're flocking the bases with model railroad turf or static grass. > Idea: When putting together some of the 1s and 2s I'm going to fill > some of the empty area on the base with debris or with another > infantry unit with its base cut off, lying on the ground. Could be > cool. Photos will be posted. Beneficent SJG has made infantry so > cheap, I may make up some 0s! Great idea. I've been doing historicals for a while now in which we occasionally have these bases of wounded/dead, helping participants to see the ebb and flow of the battle as well as assisting us by making any AAR (after action write-ups) we attempt easier. > Another thought: I'm going to put some figures on a different base > to portray engineers. What should I use? A big washer? Washers work well in many cases. If you're interested in shapes other than circles try purchasing a reasonable solid piece of hobby plastic or bass wood and cutting and shaping it to your desired shape. Next apply a filler (i.e. spackle or putty) and build up the base just a bit. Then, if desired, add some smaller aquarium rocks or other items that look like general debris (really good for engineer types). ;-) Kevin Walker sage@chartermi.net ------------------------------ From: "Matthew D. That's why it isn't newsworthy when monster pickup trucks fall through the ice. Seriously, people around here seem to think that you can drive on ice as soon as the lake/swamp is covered. Lots of trucks and cars fall through too thin ice every year in Minnesota. Matt ----- Subject: Minnesota From: Kevin Walker > Minnesota is really flat. The hills are only a problem in the winter when > they are covered by ice. Jump suited infantry wouldn't have any problems > at all. From the central part of the state to the west this is true. The area in the Southeastern part of the state has a fair amount of rolling hills. I'm in total agreement though that infantry wouldn't have any problem with any of the terrain I live around. > [Is the ice thick enough to support 60 ton tanks? -HJC] If it's been a cold enough winter like this one. ;-) Now an OGRE might be a book of a different cover though. One good thing about Minnesota winters - they encourage you to get some miniature painting done. But then again for a Seattle transplant like myself so to the hot and sometimes humid summer days. Hmmm...that gives me an idea for a very time consuming project involving one of my unpainted OGREs - one covered in hieroglyphics. Thanks a lot Mr. Cobb, as if I didn't have enough projects awaiting me. ;-) Kevin Walker sage@chartermi.net ----- [Or you could paint it up as the Sphinx.
