Comments and criticisms welcome! Schoon ============================== From: "nvdoyle" Subject: Ogre: Thoughts So I've been thinking. I love Ogre dearly, but something is sticking in my head, about the gameplay. It's the Igo-Hugo thing. I move and shoot everything, then you move and shoot everything. I've played other games, especially miniatures rules-sets that use a back-and-forth activation, either of single units (mostly naval games) or combat groups (ground games). So what I'm curious to see, has anyone else thought of or tried this for Ogre Classic or Minis? I have yet to give it a shot, but, I think it might resolve some of the mild discomfort about the current system I have. Igo-Hugo just grates on me, at times. Noah V. Anyone heard what has happed to Ogre Miniatures 2nd edition? Last I heard was that it was going to be sent to a new printer. But it has not reappeared on the "upcomming" list (now available through January 2001 ). --- Brian Bell --- ============================== From: Dave Morse Subject: Desktop Wallpaper, (Yet Another?) Nihonese Armor Set For your viewing pleasure, my web page has two new Ogre related items: Ogre Battlefields wallpaper is just a bunch of scanned maps that produce a tiling desktop background. Nihon Armor is an article that introduces stats for Japanese armor units. Whereas in the west the typical armor unit costs 6 VPs, in the Imperial army a typical armor unit costs 9 VPs, and has a few extra features. I think its a neat set of units, some interesting patterns emerge... If anyone is remotely interested in playtesting these guys, you'll find me ready. :) Links: Main page -- http://www.bomberlan.net/~dm/ Wallpaper -- http://www.bomberlan.net/~dm/battlefields.jpg Nihon -- http://www.bomberlan.net/~dm/nihon.html --Dave ===== [Hmmmmm.... crunching numbers on some of these units. N Lt Missile Tank: 1/3 * 3 * (8 + 6) + 2 * (4 + 6) + 2 * 2 * (4/3 +4) = (14 + 20 + 21.333) / 12 = about 4.5 VPs. NGEV: 3 * (4 + 8 * 1.2) + 3 * 2 * (4 + 6 * 1.2) = 40.8 + 67.2 = 9 VPs Well at least somebody's been doing their math. BTW: The reason that the NGEV-PC only costs 4.5 VPs is because they forgot to put in poweful enough lifting fans to move while carrying any infantry. (What a deal! :) As an alternative, along the same lines as the other Nihon units, why not: Atk 1/2 plus one-shot 3/4 (limited fire control), D2, M 3/2 carries three squads of infantry. Cost is 1/3 * 3 * (8 + 6 * 1.2) + 1 * (4 + 6 * 1.2) + 2 * 2 * (4/3 + 4 + 4 * 1.2) = 15.2 + 11.2 + 40.53 or 5.6 VPs plus the carry infantry bonus should total about 9 VPs. The tactical doctrine would be to unload the infantry and have them walk to contact and if the situation proved too hot to handle the carriers would rush up and provide covering fire with their single missile barrage while the infantry withdrew. Another alternative would be to use an approximation of the first version of the GEV-PC, Atk 1/1, D1, M3/2 which carries three squads for 4.5 VPs. Note that the text on page 78 of the Ogre book states two different values for the defense strength of the GEV-PC. (Loading up the back of the pickup with point defense guns lowers its defense value!) The fault must be mine. -HJC] Henry J.
