====== OGRE Digest, December 10th (Last: December 9th) ======== ===== Crowding out the LGEVs From: "Chris French" From: David Morse ===== Hammer & Anvil AAR, LGEV rams From: David Morse ===== Ogres in space From: AvaheilDotter@aol.com ============================== From: "Chris French" Subject: Crowding out the LGEVs > At this point I've forgotten the original proposal, Mine was to treat OGRE missile warheads as Cruise Missile war- heads. When the LGEVs shotgun out to fill every hex in the vicin- ity, the shockwave effect clobbers them. (I did the calculations, and determined that firing two missiles to two points 3 hexes away from launch point and at 120-degree angles from one another, will effectively end the Fuzzy-Wuzzy threat.) > When CFs Nice choice of acronym there.... And a strength 1 attack only kills a LGEV 1/3 of the time -- the CM warhead automatically kills any GEV within 3 hexes of the deto- nation site. (_Shockwave_ is cruel to GEVs.) Now, were that same force to be made up of Lt. Tanks, the auto- kill zone would be much smaller. (D2 Armor unit v. any GEV.) > [Against GEVs I'd rather trade off warhead than range. Oh, the missiles are still Range 5 -- realize that a GEV has to be 2- hexes away to attack, and only moves 3 on its second move. As you can see, the GEVs can't run. Of course, having CM warheads, the VP cost for firing one is a commander's nightmare.... > [The GURPS Vehicles design I'm working on for the Gremlin LGEV carries > four Hypersmart missiles on hardpoints under those huge wings. Each of > those missiles is 3,000 pounds and a cruise missile warhead is only 127 > pounds. -HJC] A 127-lb. warhead leaves a 1.5 km hole in the map? Egad. CF ===== [Compare to the W80 of a century earlier. http://nuketesting.enviroweb.org/hew/Usa/Weapons/W80.html -HJC] ===== From: David Morse Subject: Crowding out the LGEVs > [Against GEVs I'd rather trade off warhead than range. > > Say range 6, attack 4 against the primary target, attack 2 spillover in >that hex and attack 1 spillover in each adjacent hex. > > If that was the alternative, I'd replace every Ogre missile issued to >my forces with that weapon. -HJC] 4/2/1 is a prettier idea than 6/1/1. (the notation specifies target/same-hex/adjacent-hex). I'm not sure about restoring the 4/2/1 to range 5. With blast radius 1, that gives a Mark III a strike range of 9 hexes, the magic number for one-shotting a howitzer. We have yet to specify what happens with this new pseudo-spillover, when combined with regular spillover. My feeling is that the regular spillover attack should just be waived. So one of these at 2 stacked GEVs would be a 2-1 on the primary, and a 1-1 on his buddy, with D=disable, X=destroyed. With the availability of 6/0/0 range 5s and 4/2/1 range 4s would you still go all clusterbomb on a Mk V? If so I'd be sorely tempted to take all superheavy tanks, initially spread out 3 hexes from eachother. Missiles get puny 1-2s. Mains get puny 1-2s, and I think only 2 can be destroyed by secondaries due to the geometry. On the counterstrike the tanks would go for secondaries. Well after all I'm not sure this would work. While we're thinking about multi-hex-damaging missiles, what about one that drops bomblets in a straight line? Say strength 2 attacks in five different hexes, which must be either a straight line out from the Ogre, or a straightish W: _ _ _ / \_/ \_/ \_ \_/ \_/ \_/*\ \_/ \_/ \_/ _ / \_ \_/ \_ \_/ \_ \_/ \_ \_/ \_ \_/*\ \_/ (the stared hex is the hex the firer is in) (the firer may rotate or flip these around either X or Y axis to get the blast pattern he/she desires) I'm not very serious about this proposal, but hopefully it amuses nonetheless. I am pretty seriously interested in the circular blast pattern. It sounds neato. ============================== From: David Morse Subject: Hammer & Anvil AAR, LGEV rams >Note: the fourth move saw the use of a GEV ram to do the final point and >get the Ogre down to M2. How do we feel about this technique? Also, >c'mon now, shouldn't LGEVs do 0 when ramming/being rammed? > > > [The published LGEV weighs 59 tons and can go 300 mph. By GURPS >Vehicles that should destroy 1/8th of a Mark V's total track hit points in >a ram. -HJC] Ha! If GURPS Ogre says its true, then it must be false! =) ============================== From: AvaheilDotter@aol.com Subject: Ogres in space << Mmm -- space _OGRE_. Steal the movement rules from _Triplanet- ary_; handle combat as normal; adapt armor units to be various types of starship; voila! (Anyone who has SJG's _Star Fist_ has the movement rules for _Triplanetary_. In fact, _SF_ specifically describes itself in part as "_OGRE_ In Space"....) >> I've read some of the Bolo books, and I have to disagree with the Idea that a tank could stand up to essentially unlimited orbital bombardment abilities, especially from opponents who don't care about spillover fire. Or damage to the ecology. But I also read books that have dragons in them, and they are just as unrealistic... Ad Astra!
