I'm not an expert, I only play one on TV. Notably the randomization of reinforcement rolls will cause major issues for the defender. Another way of dealing with this is by the expedient of rolling 2d6 for reinforcements and heavily weighting the southernmost roads (that's where the big military bases are, to either side, not way back behidn the lines to the north!) > > Another way to balance things out is to declare the > > SE coastal cities > > entirely destroyed already, and not available for > > VPs. This forces the attacking force to come further north on the map, which gives the defenders more turns to get and organize reinforcements. I'm beginning to think that all three aspects can be tweaked to make a 'fair' game against a MkIV, I'm just not sure how heavily to weight the die roll for reinforcements coming in from the east/west edges rather than the north. I am also inclined to rewrite the reinforcement table to reflect the sorts of units that would come onto the scene with the most speed. Unaccompanied infantry? Not bloody likely. INF riding a GEV-PC? Yeah. GEVs? Yeah. HVYs and LTs? Less quickly. MSL Tanks? Much less quickly. MHWZ? NO. None. It's a waste of a reroll unless it pops up in exactly the right spot, and the defense is unlikely to be willing to uproot artillery and try to roll it out against a fast raider. Ratty ============================== From: Servitor@aol.com Subject: Flunky says: Re: SHVY! > my suggestion that the new version of the SHVY was > worth 15VPs touched off a bit of a discussion In most scenarios with armor/INF on both sides, yes. As part of the defense force in "Get the Command Post" (and its many variants), no. Yes, that extra point of defense sucks up way to much of the opposite side's fire (even if just in terms of a nervous enemy directing mucho firepower at 'em). But an Ogre can "D" 'em far easier than opposing armor, making them easy meat for the follow up attack as the Ogre rumbles by... And, of course, the AP are useless against an Ogre-only force. Just my two millicredits worth... Best, John Hurtt (Servitor@aol.com) ===== [I have no problems with charging 2 armor units for the OGRE/Shockwave "caltrop" 3 tread units damage SHVY and 2.5 armor units for "thundering fortress" errated OGRE Minis monster that gets to lurk in woods and overrun the weak and inoffensive and even bash small Ogres into immobility. On the other forums, over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SFBay_OGRE/ Grant A. Ladue suggested replacing the Mk VI's two missile racks with a forest of one-shot ogre missiles. And David Morse started a poll on MIL riding tanks, after it was pointed out as a way for Lt Tanks to match the firepower of SHVYs. Battlefields does fix this flaw and some balance between the Ogre Minis and Battlefields MIL is probally workable, but let me figure out what their weapons equipment and tactics are first. -HJC] ============================== Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
