====== Ogre Digest, October 17th (Last: October 14th) ======== ===== Light vs SuperHeavy From: stephan beal ===== The mighty mk3 vs. fencer From: "Louis Wardlaw IV" ===== GEV Raid scenario with Ogres From: Sethkimmel@aol.com ===== _OGRE_ opinion wanted From: "Chris French" ============================== From: stephan beal Subject: Light vs SuperHeavy > And David Morse started a poll on MIL riding tanks, after it was > pointed out as a way for Lt Tanks to match the firepower of SHVYs. > Battlefields does fix this flaw... Henry, Could you please elaborate on that a bit? i'm not contradicting you, but i don't remember reading anything about inf riding other units in Battlefields, except for the notes about militia. Additionally, i'd be very curious to hear how an LT with hitchhikers can match the firepower of an SHV (i missed that thread, apparently). take care, ----- stephan ===== [Well, not one on one by any means. If you accept that the SHVY is really a 15 VP unit then a pair of Light tanks each carrying a Heavy Weapons squad (French light tanks no doubt), come up to 14 VPs total and will get the first shot with their missiles for a 1-1 and then if the SHVY is disrupted the tanks will drive forwards on their next turn and combine fire with the infantry for another 1-1. If Light Tanks can carry MIL and "MIL squads" only cost 1/3rd of a VP each then four light tanks carrying MIL are less than 14 VPs and even if they always give up the first shot to the SHVY they will always reply with at least a 1-1 in response. Conventional INF don't work as well, except so far as they prevent the Light Tank from being a "free overrun" until they are blown off. -HJC] ============================== From: "Louis Wardlaw IV" Subject: The mighty mk3 vs. fencer I have seen the mk3 in action many times and have yet to be really impressed. Sure it can drive over enemies after it has lost its guns, but it really lacks killing power compared to the fencer. Does anybody else think the fencer is a little too suprerior to the standard mk3? Louis J. WardlawIV Postbus 12600, 2500 DJ Den Haag, Neiderland ===== [Well, there is a Mk III-B http://www.sjgames.com/miniatures/ogre/combineset12/ Which SJ thinks is worth almost the same as the Fencer-A. (See http://www.io.com/~hcobb/gev/2001/gevoct31.txt for my thoughts.) To win this matchup, the III-B gives up first missile shot and loses 2 secondaries to the first salvo. Then it closes and blows off 2-3 racks. If it got three racks it usually wins. -HJC] ============================== From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: GEV Raid scenario with Ogres > This forces the attacking force to come further north on the map, which > gives the defenders more turns to get and organize reinforcements. Is the MkV vs MkIV balanced? ============================== From: "Chris French" Subject: _OGRE_ opinion wanted TNT reran _The Terminator_ a few nights back; serendipitously, I was looking at _GURPS OGRE_ (yes, it's that loud :) ), and a some- what warped idea floated through my brain. Picture the following: A Combine Superheavy tank platoon is grinding across SE Spain, when it is ambushed by several squads of Vatican Guard infantry, backstopped by a Pikeman (Paneuro OGRE Mk.1). The Combine force loses a couple tanks, but manages to wipe out the ambushers. (Praise the lord and pass the armor and AP upgrade kits! :) ) As the Combine troops pause to check out the remains of the Paneuro force, one of the tankers steps closer to a battlesuit, which has had both legs and one arm shot off and the helmet caved in. The tanker looks at the suit -- which begins to twitch its arm! The Com- bine soldier, unsurprisingly, screams and begins plowing shot after shot from his sidearm into the wrecked suit. Soon joined by equally shocked comrades, the suit is soon reduced to scrap. One of the troopers (*NOT* the original one! :) ) tries to pop the latches on the suit -- and notices there don't seem to be any. Another trooper looks at the crushed helmet, and faints. The unit commander rushes over and looks at the helmet, expecting to see a bloody mess. He sees a mess, all right -- but one of spilled hydraulic fluid and splint- ered metal. For the occupants of the battlesuits are not human -- they are machines, with drone-level AI, controlled by the cyber- tank's brain. Is this too over-the-top for _OGRE_, or does it seem reasonable? Thank you. CF ===== [Actually as you can see in GURPS OGRE, the flying drones are a robotic "infantry" force. From their weapons and equipment they seem designed mostly to hunt down infantry. I'm working on an article about GURPS OGRE weapons and equipment for infantry. At the moment I'm designing gear for militia and have settled on having one man in each squad carry a "battle computer" that extends a sensor periscope above the trench to acquire targeting information to hand off to the guys with the missile launcher tubes. (Gotta remember to include shovels for the MIL so they can save everybody else the trouble of digging their graves...) Naturally the first squad to call their battle computer "Orac" is going get a visit from a cruise missile. -HJC] ============================== Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
