====== OGRE Digest, April 29th, 2003 (Last: April 27th) ======== ===== Strategic Ogre From: "Chris French" ===== Howdy (A Reintroduction) From: Fred Kiesche ============================== From: "Chris French" Subject: Strategic Ogre > From: Sethkimmel@aol.com > Or our decision NOT to modify the turret ring and mantlet of the Sherman > to take the 90 mm AA gun because of fears of assembly line disruption and > petty bickering over doctrine.... It was entirely a bureaucratic decision (which just goes to show what happens when REMFs are allowed to run the show). > Ob Ogre. any Ogre/GEV canon (pun intended...:-) ) that reflects poor > strategic decision making like this? > > [Infantry? INF has its uses -- just not in the game proper. I'm working on a sce- nario where INF does what it's supposed to do in war. And I don't mean serving as cannon-fodder. > The Combine building Mark Is instead of superheavies? (Note that in > GO, the superheavy does cost as much as five Light Tanks.) Or continuing > to build Mark IIIs after the III-B? -HJC] [nod] Burrocratic inertia never fails. (Again, this might explain why the Last War accomplished nothing.) > [I was thinking as computer games. > > Imagine the impact Raid on Iran for the game consoles would have > right now. -HJC] First-person shooters have killed the computer strategy game mar- ket, which sucks for folks like me who don't have the reflexes left to play such games. _ROI_ as a FPS would be pointless, as pretty much every reality-based FPS these days involves vaporizing Middle Easterners. > [Battlesuit has several weakness that keep it from supporting > vehicles, like not separating the effect of ECM from armor. True, altho' I tried. (I treated all vehicles in _B_ the way OGREs are treated in _O_. It worked, after a fashion.) > Call it SATNUC (Saturation Nuclear Cluster munition), put the stats for > all the common Ogre units up front (with pictures of the minis) and the > GURPS conversion notes in the back. -HJC] :P I'd prefer something that used the _O_ game mechanic, if at all pos- sible. _GO_ leaves a bad taste in my mouth -- it seems overly com- plicated. CF ==== [I have a scenario that showcases hoverized infantry at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/gev/2002/gevmay23.txt I'm thinking of something that cuts way back on the GURPS complexity and has maybe half a dozen numbers for a battlesuited grunt and gun. -HJC] ============================== From: Fred Kiesche Subject: Howdy (A Reintroduction) Greetings: Back on the list after a gap of several years. At one point I guess I changed addresses, forgot to renew, and then got busy... Now that I'm being laid off, it's time to pursue the finer things in life, like OGRE! Now if I could find a WarpWar list as well, life would be truely good! Anyway, it's nice to see the list is still going (thanks Henry!) and to see the work at SJG. I love the miniatures, and will obviously be sending pocket money to Evil Steve when I get a new job. Some wonderful stuff! In the meantime, I'll probably get the extra map set, as that is something I urged SJG (via Allen Varney, where is he these days?) to do around the time that "Shockwave" first came out. Nice to see they did eventually follow through on my other suggestion ("Reinforcements"). Somewhere in the basement I have an article that I co-wrote with a friend (Steve Davidson) for a Combat Engineering expansion for Ogre/GEV. We were hoping that it would become a "Space Gamer" (ahhh, memories!) article, but at that point, IIRC, SJG was mostly interested in the in-house end of development. If I can find it, I'll "digitize" it (we typed it up on an IBM Selectric!!!) and submit it to the list for picking apart and general use. We did a bit of playtesting, and the rules worked, but heck, that was a looong time ago! As for me, I'm interested in gamers in the central NJ area for Ogre and other odds and ends. My players have, for the most part, moved to odd places of the country (mostly in California, something about the NJ weather that drives them away!). I'm in the process of selling off most of my gaming collection, but will still keep Ogre/GEV, a few RPG's such as Universe and EPT, and a pile of "board" style games such as Triplanetary. And MG microgames, of course!!!! Thanks again to Henry for keeping the list going and for letting me join up again. Have a good day and may your fields of fire be clear!!!
