====== OGRE Digest, Aug 11th, 2003 (Last: Aug 5th) ======== ===== Ogre miniatures, gone again. From: "Noah V. Doyle" ===== Twenty Bucks From: "Chris French" ============================== From: "Noah V. Doyle" Subject: Ogre miniatures, gone again. Or soon to be gone (see Illuminator for August 9th) Buy 'em up now, folks. Sadly, I was overbudget at GenCon when I saw that SJG was selling the mini box sets, 3 for 2. At least we'll see the Doppelsoldner and the Vulcan, along with the Mk. VI. Noah ===== [See http://www.sjgames.com/ill/ and scroll down to Aug 9th. It doesn't seem to be reflected on the Ogre or Minis pages yet. -HJC] ============================== From: "Chris French" Subject: Twenty Bucks > From: hcobb@io.com > Clearly the best value so far in Ogre Minis. > > http://www.sjgames.com/miniatures/ogre/mk6/ OK -- the first one of you clowns who names his Mk. 6 mini "Eccentrica Gallumbits" is gettin' nuked into imbecility.... :) > [Nope. > > Check out either the old or new Ogre Book and you'll see what I'm > mumbling about... -HJC] Oh, you mean the "Jet Airplanes" with maximum speeds of around 80 MPH? [rolls eyes] Didn't Costikyan bother to look at the map and time scales when he wrote that? Course, this *is* the same guy who called _OGRE_ "The ideal game to play whilst stoned".... > From: Sethkimmel@aol.com > Subject: Tank Power > I'd think there would be a market > pressures to produce corn oil for vehicle consumption in a direct inverse > ratio to the price of diesel as petroleum starts to disappear Haven't you ever read any science fiction? In the Future, there won't *be* any personal cars. The whole world will look like a Portland Liberal's deepest fantasy -- no personal transports, no personal land ownership (except for farmers using medieval tech), and all firearms in the hands of The Government. :) > From: "Louis Wardlaw IV" > Subject: Tank Power > > First of all none of the synthetic oil production methods of the past have > ever proven to be economical. That's because none of them could GM their plants to increase yields. It's not "frankenfoods" the Euros have to worry about; it's what happens when the US becomes totally self-sufficient. Europe: "You can't invade them." US: "What do you plan to do about it?" Europe: "Umm... we'll embargo you!" US: "Whoopee -- the only things we import from you are porno and all those immigrants you don't want." Europe: "Oops." >As far as reserves are concerned: many countries have massive > oil reserves which are being expanded all of the time by new > exploration. Not to mention, the development of marine technology to > develop deepwater prospects. Which is why the whole "the oil will run out soon" line of thinking is no more than eco-freak bullplop. > Even so, I think the next logical automobile > engine would be run on natural gas. In Venezuela many old cars are being > converted over to run off natural gas of which can move a car 500 > kilometers for a handful of pennies. Mainly because a handful of pennies represents a month's income to a Venezuelan. We're not talking about an economic powerhouse here --or anywhere else on the South American continent, for that matter. >Reactors on tanks within the next > 60-100 years, well it could happen. All we have to do is look at the > explosion of computer technology advances within the last 20 years, and > see that technology does not follow a predictable trend. This much is correct. Tho' it's more likely that tanks will cease to exist save as "rank badges" in the world community -- the more advanced one's tanks are, the more powerful one is. To illustrate: How many tanks did the Iraqis have? Now what sort of tanks were they? Now how did they measure up to US tanks? The tank will become the national equivalent of the trophy bride -- "we're so rich, we can afford all these nifty Patton Mk. IVs, while all you can scrape up is a couple dozen refitted Shermans". >As far as the > Opec contries controling the market, that is simply not true anymore. In > fact, the Arabic oil embargo of the seventies hurt them way more in the > long run than it did us by diminishing their market share. Actually, the main way it hurt OPEC was to demonstrate beyond doubt what a bunch of money-grubbers they were; ironic for a group that hates Israel so much to live down to *that* stereotype. >As far as > Europe falling apart, I seriously doubt it. For one, they are socialists > which means that nobody goes hungry nor is anybody really that poor. It is > a fact that content people are far less likely to cause trouble then > desperate poverty striken peoples. It's not that Europe will "fall apart"; it's that the "European" (read: white) population is shrinking rapidly, while the "immigrant" (read: "non-white") population is growing, and would grow faster, except that the European gov'ts are doing their level best to pre- vent immigrants settling in the various countries. Thus, Europe will cease to be "European", and instead become "immigrant". I'm waiting for the day when one or more of the European nations begins offering huge cash awards to mothers who produce loads of "European" babies-- "Gee, *where* have I seen *that* medal before?". > From: Sethkimmel@aol.com > Subject: Ogre minis chess set > I can't resist: Black is the above, and white is a MkV. And what Ogre > equivalent's would his hovertanks, combat cars, hover SP guns, and > skimmer infantry be? Having played a crossover game using _OGRE_ and AH's _Hammer's Slammers_ BG, I submit that Hammer's vehicles cross over exactly as is; the problem is that, technologically speaking, Hammer's equipment is hell-and-gone from the OGREverse's tech. BPC may be effective at stopping anything short of a direct hit from a nuke; how effective is it against being dropped into the sun (the equivalent of a plasma hit)? By way of comparison: (stats are Unit: Attack|Defense|Range|Move|Move Type) _HS_ Tank: 6|4|2|4|NA _O_ Hvy. Tank: 4|3|2|2|HVY _O_ GEV: 2|2|2|4/3|GEV _HS_ Hover Tank: 8|8|4|6|NA _O_ HWZ: 6|2|8|0|NA _HS_ Howitzer (2 sil. on counter): 12|1|24|0|NA The _HS_ units will handily annihilate the _O_ units. (However, _HS_ does not provide a map or time scale....) CF ===== [That's why I figure the Ogre Magi aren't jet fighters. They're hoverplatforms like SHIELD's heli-carrier. They cost a lot less and it's not worthwhile to go faster than they can dodge anyway, with all those pesky lasers around. As for plasma power. The power of the sun is not focused to a point, like the thermonuclear shaped charge on an Ogre missile. -HJC] ============================== Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
