====== OGRE Digest, January 8th (Last: December 30th) ======== ===== Basic Scenario defense: 10 GEV, 1 HWZ? Okay, i blame most of it on two or three completely foolish strategic errors on the Ogre's part and a large number of poor dice rolls on the Ogre's side, but... i did as Henry suggested except that i used 2-pt infantry because i'm lazy and didn't want to swap out the counter holders (the old Ogre Deluxe Edition). The part i wasn't so sure about was where to place my infantry in the start, because it'd be so easy for the Ogre to out-run them. i ended up laying them out across the front line, with a slightly larger concentration in the middle. The Ogre, because he was cocky after beating the 12 GEV defense several times before, charged right up the middle into the infantry and that was his first incredibly foolish mistake - the MB got stripped immediately. The GEVs reached the Ogre on my second turn and on that turn i had some 21 attack points to bring to bear on him. For the first time in a long time i wasn't "terribly worried" about the Ogre. Here's how it ended: Ogre stopped in hex 0812(!!!) with 0 MB, 0 MSL, 4 SB and 8 AP He could have been much further along, but delayed two turns to nail some GEVs behind him (and he missed 3 out of 3 targets on one of those opportunities). Defense ended with zero infantry and seven(!!!) hovercraft! Anyway... i blame the drasticness of the Ogre's defeat on some silly player mistakes, but i can definately see that the approach is usable, and will try it again once the Ogre's ego has settled down enough to let him make more prudent decisions and have a fair fight. Thanks, Henry! ----- stephan stephan@einsurance.de - http://www.einsurance.de i need a woman who can say, 'honey, can you please take a look at this stack trace while I order the pizza?' and really mean it. ===== [The important thing to notice is that Ogre guns do LESS damage against lower defense infantry stacks. Those 3/1 counters are just made to soak up a secondary battery attack. I've still got the Space Gamer with that article. (Oh, > God. Who let grandpa out of the retirement home?) Well, at least his doing it allowed others to create a set of base- lines from which I could operate. > > HWI = "Heavy Weapon Infantry" Ah. Thanks. > "Alternate" basic Ogre terrain: Play on the "Necromancer" map! Ah, yes -- the game where a player who orders his troops to kill themselves becomes even more powerful. (This from _Murphy's Rules_.) What I want is to find a book of RL maps which could be photo- copied or scanned into a computer, and then have a hexgrid in- serted over-top. Said hexgrid would be scaled down to whatever the map uses for 1.5 km. Then an _OGRE_ map of actual European (or wherever) terrain could be created. >The potential for Cruise Missile abuse on the > Necromancer map cannot be understated! This one sentence, more than anything else, explains why players Should Not Do This [TM]. > i've spent much of this week playing out the Basic Scenario on my old Ogre > Deluxe Edition set, mostly for a reason which never occured to me: the > 1/2" pieces of the standard set are hard on some people's eyes. Well, if you're like me, and you make your own counters for per- sonal use (minis are just too damned expensive and massive), just make your own larger-size personal-use-only counters. BTW: Did I mention these are for personal use only? Not for selling to others? Completely and totally for one's own use? No selling? None at all? Not now, not ever, NEVER!? :) CF ===== [When I first heard about deluxe Ogre I thought it would be inch wide full color counters like what SFB got. -HJC] ============================== Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
