====== OGRE Digest, Nov 17th, 2003 (Last: Nov 11th) ======== ===== OGRE's Grandfather From: "Chris French" ===== Mass production of Ogre brains From: David Morse ===== Ogre-sized artillery From: David Morse ============================== From: "Chris French" Subject: OGRE's Grandfather > From: "Noah V. Doyle" > At least they actually built a T-28. > Here's the Fencer's ancestor... > http://members.tripod.com/~fingolfen/superheavy/p1000.html > Only the Germans... There's no way on this earth the Germans could have built that thing. Hell, the Maus barely worked.... > From: David Morse > Subject: mass production of Ogre brains > The first side that did this could afford to put Ogre brains not only > into its Ogres, but also into its heavy tanks, GEVs, and maybe even > infantry. Well, considering what a nuclear battlefield would do to flesh (even flesh surrounded by BPC), I'd have to say this is the only way to make an OGREverse war possible. (Of course, that makes it _Rivets_, but.... :) ) > [Also you don't want identical Ogre brains because they'll all make > the same mistakes. Not necessarily. An "intelligent" OGRE brain would be able to learn from others' experiences. > My mental image has a Mark V driving up to the Grand Canyon and then > falling over the edge to crash on top of a pile of wrecked Mark Vs. -HJC] That would be the Mk. V brain named "Homer", then. :) [rumble rumble rumble CRASH] "D'oh!" BTW: A few days ago, the local newspaper had an article about military personnel who have had limbs amputated trying to get back into active service by using advanced prosthetics. Umm, why is the word "cyberpunk" floating across my brain? CF ============================== From: David Morse Subject: Mass production of Ogre brains > [Aren't we about a week too late to shamble around mumbling brains, > brains? > > According to GO, Ogre brains cost more than a Superheavy Tank. I don't really understand what it means to "cost" something once you have the templates cut and the autofac production ramped up. Presumably there's still competition for raw materials (another reason Ogres are so expensive), but presumably Ogre brains are made of the same "stuff" as other electronics. (Only if they're made out of different "stuff", say dilithium crystals, that neatly solves the problem) > Also you don't want identical Ogre brains because they'll all make the > same mistakes. I imagine a sort of animal husbandry approach. Think of Sergant Apone (from Aliens) stomping up and down in front of a line of freshly manufactured Mark IIIs: "ALLRIGHT YOU CHIPJACKED CHICKENS! HERE'S THE DEAL! WE GOT A WAR TO WIN - EVERYONE OF YOU THAT GOES OUT AND DESTROYS TWO COMPANIES OF PANSIES, AND MAKES IT BACK HERE, GETS YOUR SORRY BRAIN COPIED BACK INTO A MARK V. NOW GO GET EM! ARRR!" ===== [Your Pentium or PowerPC chip has only a few pennies worth of sand and trace materials in it. Do you feel ripped off at the price you paid for it? -HJC] ============================== From: David Morse Subject: Ogre-sized artillery In the 2080s the combine toyed with a super-gun, and of course decided to mount it on an Ogre hull. The resulting Ogre was slower than usual (movement 2). The gun was vulnerable, so demanded a heavy screening force, often infantry. Ogre super-gun D8 strength 12, max range 16, minimum range 6 50 vp 25 shots When it is fired a straight edge must be placed between the gun and the target. The shell travels through all the intervening hexes, and can be shot down like a cruise missile, though its harder to hit: -2 to the roll. The super-gun may not fire on a turn it was moved. Hexes adjacent to the detonation hex of a super-gun round take a strength 3 spillover attack. The super-gun instantly rubbles any forest or town it hits. The carrier Ogre was a formidibile Ogre in its own right: 4 main batteries 6 external missiles 12 anti personnel 72 treads total @ movement 2 165 VP?? ===== [I don't understand the design. Is this a direct fire weapon, a smart shell or some sort of missile? (Note that in GO, Ogre Main batteries can fire Cruise Missile warheads...) -HJC] ============================= Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
