====== OGRE Digest, Nov 20th, 2003 (Last: Nov 17th) ======== ===== Cybernetic Warriors From: Sethkimmel@aol.com ===== Mass production of Ogre brains From: Michael Bloss From: "Imre A. Szabo" ===== Ogre Construction Material From: "Herb Diehr" ===== Ogre-sized artillery From: stephan ===== Advance Wars 2 From: David Morse ============================== From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Cybernetic Warriors > A few days ago, the local newspaper had an article about > military personnel who have had limbs amputated trying to get > back into active service by using advanced prosthetics Nothing new; look up the service record of Douglas Bader. I'm sure he wasn't the only one... ===== [Or Admiral Nelson? -HJC] ============================== From: Michael Bloss Subject: Mass production of Ogre brains Cost of Ogre brains in GO: Don't forget, UltraTech2 introduces increased starting wealth because of tech level. Depending on whether you count the Ogreverse as TL 9 or 10 in terms of wealth (I'd go so far as 10 given the heavy automation involved, and the level of computing power used), means that base wealth is 2 to 5 times normal, that's not just individuals, but societies too. ===== From: "Imre A. Szabo" Subject: Mass production of Ogre brains Concerning the cost of Ogre brains... A couple of years ago, the rumor was that more then half of the processors on each sillicon disc had defects and could not be sold. Intel refused to confirm or deny this rumor. Just because you have the templates for Ogre brains doesn't mean you can stamp them out in vast quantities. Manufacturing difficulties can drive up costs very quickly... ias ===== [One other thing occurs to me. Moore's Law will someday run into the quantum limit. You may have a system so dense that you can't make a copy of it without using so much energy to scan it that you destroy the original. -HJC] ============================== From: "Herb Diehr" Subject: Ogre Construction Material http://www.comdex.com/news/lasvegas2003/features/index.php?s=3Dcommon&c=3D= channeling Here we have the fore-runner to BPC. The nanotube is an incredible thing, with great strength, great conductivity and the ability to be grown (it's a crystal) to virtually any length. This seems to be the ticket to space, via an elevator. Also, the perfect stifener for plastic in cars. How about an Ogre? Well, look at the 'older' armor: M-1a and Leopards, but 2025 stuff? None listed. This is the perfect opportunity to make some! Now, the two big things in Ogre are surviving nukes and firing smart missiles. These tanks do neither, but are better than Abrahms' by far. The material is relatively cheap, able to be cut-to-fit in the field as needed, patched, woven into fabric and it has no signature. Also, it's very light. So, with weapons on the horizon today, and armor we'll be able to make, here are three nanotube designs for your pleasure. missile launcher carries four tac-nuke missiles for destroying hard points or massed personnel. Also has a secondary pair of guns firing conventional 155 mm howitzer shells, direct fire. Two 50 caliber mg in pintle mounts and one 40 mm AA on the rear. We actually built something like this AA gun, but I can't recall it's name (vulcan?). It never quite worked. Defense against conventional weapons 6 Defense against spill-over tac-nuke fire 6 Defense against strategic nuke 1 Defense in an Ogre battlefield 3 Immune to most present-day weapons Missiles 3/20 (shot down on a 12 by similar units, 7-12 in Ogre terms) Batteries 4/12 (shot down in Ogre terms 7-12) AA, MG 1/4 (shoots down air units on 11 or 12, shell defense on 12)(In Ogre terms, worthless) Infantry Defense 4 Crew of two with all guns computer controlled. All weapons may be used four times (missiles once each) Cost =3D 6 rail gun Two hyper-sonic rail guns able to smash any known defensive position above ground. Defense against conventional weapons 4 Defense against spill-over tac-nuke fire 4 Defense against strategic nuke 1 Defense in an Ogre battlefield 2 Ball 8/12 (shot down on a 7-12 in Ogre terms) Ball 8/12 (shot down on a 7-12 in Ogre terms) Crew of two with both guns computer controlled. Both weapons may be used ten times Cost =3D 4 plasma gun Two plasma guns able to create directional plasma fields. Defense against conventional weapons 6 Defense against spill-over tac-nuke fire 6 Defense against strategic nuke 1 Defense in an Ogre battlefield 3 Immune to most present-day weapons Plasma Gun 6 (Reduces by one for each hex travelled; 0 at 6 hexes) Plasma Gun 6 (Reduces by one for each hex travelled; 0 at 6 hexes) Crew of two with both guns computer controlled. Both weapons may be used ten times Cost =3D 7 Hope the people of importance in research areas are faar ahead with this idea... ============================== From: stephan Subject: Ogre-sized artillery > From: David Morse ... > (movement 2). The gun was vulnerable, so demanded a heavy screening > force, often infantry. > > Ogre super-gun > D8 "The gun was vulnerable..." D8 is vulnerable!?!?! Okay, there is of course the minimum-range vulnerability... IIRC SJ once noted that D6 was about the highest he was personally willing to accept as being in line with the Ogreverse. [i may have that number wrong - anyone remember the exact number?] > [I don't understand the design. > Is this a direct fire weapon, a smart shell or some sort of missile? > (Note that in GO, Ogre Main batteries can fire Cruise Missile warheads...) > -HJC] As Terry Pratchet might have once said, i've always had the feeling that "GO was written by someone who had heard of Ogre, but never played it." ============================== From: David Morse Subject: Advance Wars 2 This game plays kinda like Ogre, and fits in your pocket: http://www.nintendo.com/games/gamepage/gamepage_main.jsp?gameId=1645 ============================= Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
