So a slow weekend seems as appropriate a time as any to share some of my own creations. (If you have web access, the HTML-ized versions are prettier.) - -David http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/DavidEdelstein/innomine.htm - ------------------------------------------------------ Bethanel Archangel of Cities "The world is scattered and disorganized....cities are the solution." The Archangel of Cities is as old as human civilization, but younger than many of his peers. Bethanel started out as a Servitor of David, back when Jericho was new. A Mercurian, he was responsible for teaching the first city-planners. After centuries of distinguished service, he was granted a Word, and became the Angel of Cities. From Mohenjo-Daro to Ur to Rome, Bethanel attended the rise of urban civilization. Many Archangels disagreed over whether it serves Heaven's purpose or Hell's to encourage humans to cluster together and build on such a large scale. They still do. Shortly after Bethanel was given his Word, Lucifer appointed someone to be his nemesis; Izrann, the Demon of Cities. Izrann has done much to corrupt cities and turn them into concentrations of poverty, crime and pollution, but Bethanel works steadfastly to make the good outweigh the bad. Bethanel loves cities, the civic mentality, the hustle and bustle of urban life, the concentration of arts and sciences, the wealth and prosperity of a well-run community. He can't imagine why anyone would want to live isolated from other people, or scattered in tribes that must scrabble in the dirt for sustenance, or confine themselves to tiny, insignificant villages that will never be more than a single note in the Symphony. Agrarian society, in Bethanel's view, exists to support cities, which are the apex of human civilization. Everything important happens in cities. Everything worthwhile comes from urban civilization. With the dawn of the Industrial Age, cities became more important than ever. Dozens of cities contained populations greater than that of entire continents back when Bethanel began. Looking after just one major city was a job that could occupy an angel full-time; overseeing them all was spreading the Angel of Cities too thinly. But his Word had grown in power also, and in the19th century, the Seraphim Council recognized Bethanel as a full Archangel. Since then, he has continued to espouse the benefits of urban life, while trying to undo the damage Izrann has done. To Bethanel, all cities are good, and as many people as possible should be encouraged to settle down in them. He isn't trying to pave the earth (he does recognize, in an abstract way, that the world needs non-urban areas as well), but he doesn't really care about any part of the world that isn't in a city. Every major city has its own angel looking after it in Bethanel's name. He would like to have the "manpower" to put a host of angels in every urban community, but there just aren't that many angels in Heaven, and as a new Archangel, he doesn't get a large share of the new ones that are created. In every city that he has been able to put a servitor, he has petitioned the Seraphim Council for that Servitor to be granted a Word, the word being the name of the city itself. The Council has been divided over the legitimacy of investing individual cities with the power of a Word, and so far, only twelve such "City Angels" have been granted Words. Those cities are New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rome, Jerusalem, London, Cairo, Athens, Paris, St. Petersburg, Beijing, and Hong Kong. Bethanel is lobbying hard for the angels he has stationed in other major cities, such as Chicago, Moscow, Washington, Tokyo and Mexico City, to be given Words also. The vast majority of Bethanel's servitors are permanent residents of a city chosen by him, charged with overseeing a particular aspect of that population center. Only a few (such as the PCs) are made "free agents" who may travel from one city to the next on various errands. Promotion within the ranks of the Archangel of Cities can be rapid, but future advancements will depend largely on how well Bethanel is able to acquit himself in Heavenly politics. DISSONANCE It is dissonant for an Angel of Cities to spend more than 24 hours outside any city limits. If a "stranded" angel makes it to a city within 24 hours after gaining dissonance, it will fade, but remaining out in the countryside for more than 48 hours will require the dissonance to be worked off in some other way. It is also dissonant for his Servitors to do anything that contributes to urban decay, or diminishes the quality of city life, such as littering or committing acts of vandalism. (Causing collateral damage during a fight isn't dissonant if it was necessary and/or unavoidable, but reckless disregard for one's surroundings while carrying out angelic duties is. Bethanel frowns on car chases.) CHOIR ATTUNEMENTS Angels of Bethanel are specially attuned to one particular city (though their choir attunements will work in any city.) They get a free Knowledge/6 for the city they have been assigned to. The exception is the few servitors Bethanel assigns as "wandering" city angels; they gain a Knowledge skill equal to their Ethereal Forces applicable to any city they enter...but only if they are in that city on business for Bethanel, and only so long as they are actually in the city. Seraphim Seraphim of Cities know at a glance whether anyone they look at is a resident of the city they're in or a visitor, and if they are a resident, how long they have lived there. Cherubim Cherubim of Cities must always choose their city as one of the things to which they are attuned. While so attuned, they are automatically successful when making a Resonance roll for something or someone else within the city (a d666 roll is still necessary, for purposes of the check digit and checking for a 111 or 666.) They will also know immediately if one of the objects of their attunement enters or leaves the city. Ofanim Ofanim of Cities never get lost within their city. When invoking their Resonance for area knowledge, they automatically add their Ethereal Forces to the target number, in addition to the check digit of a successful roll. They get this bonus even if the resonance roll fails! Elohim Bethanel's Elohim are experts at reading the mood of a crowd. They can apply their resonance to any group of people, and sense how the mob as a whole will react to events. Malakim In combat, Malakim of Cities receive the ultimate "home turf advantage". When fighting in their city, Bethanel's Malakim add their Corporeal Forces to the check digit of all Dodge rolls. Kyriotates Bethanel's Kyriotates may inhabit city fixtures; mailboxes, fire hydrants, even streets and buildings. They have no control over the constructs they inhabit- a Kyriotate-possessed street lamp does not become mobile, and a Kyriotate inhabiting a building can't take over the building's lights and elevators (unless he has appropriate Songs to allow this). But the Kyriotate can remain in such inanimate objects as long as he likes, able to sense everything going on around him, while remaining virtually undetectable to other Celestials. Mercurians Bethanel's Mercurians can apply their resonance to not only read a person's background, but obtain detailed personal information of a statistical nature as well. Add the following information to the usual Mercurian Check Digit Results Chart: Mercurians of Cities Check Digit Results 1... You know the subject's home address 2... The light is always green as they reach it...unless for some reason the angel wants it to be red. It also works for crosswalks and elevators. Parking Spot The angel has a convenient free sparking spot, wherever he wants to park his car (or truck, or motorcycle, or trailer)! It will appear as if by magic, not be noticed even if it shouldn't be there (such as in a "No Parking" zone), and will disappear when the angel drives away. DISTINCTIONS Vassal of Cities The Vassal can produce a city permit for just about anything within reason. This includes concealed weapons permits, handicapped parking permits, and professional licenses. Friend of Citizens The angel has an instinctive familiarity with all cities. A Friend not only has Area Knowledge/6 with any city he enters, but he receives a bonus equal to his Celestial Forces on any reaction rolls from city officials (including police officers). Master of Civilization The angel is practically immune to local laws. He will never be stopped for speeding, jaywalking, disorderly conduct, public nudity, or any other violation of local ordinances. There are two important caveats; first, this applies only to local laws (so the angel still can't get away with murder or tax evasion). Secondly, doing anything criminal without good reason is potentially dissonant, so this is not a privilege to be abused. RELATIONS While respected for the work he does, many of his fellow Archangels doubt that encouraging cities is, in the long run, a good thing. Jordi in particular feels that the last refuges of wildlife are being destroyed for the sake of mankind's ravenous cities, and Novalis would rather see more trees planted. Bethanel has undertaken a potentially risky course by allying himself with some of Heaven's other underdogs. He has made overtures to Gabriel, to which he has received a lukewarm reaction. In order to build political capital with Khalid, Archangel of Faith, he has agreed to place Mecca at the top of his "wish list" for cities to be made Words. This has earned him considerable enmity from Laurence. It may be guided towards salvation, but cannot be forced." Johab is probably the most benevolent and compassionate of all the Archangels, and intervenes directly in mortal affairs more than any other. He genuinely loves humanity, and he takes a personal interest in each and every soul he comes across. Of course he cannot focus his attention too long on any one individual, but he will not allow his servants to forsake anyone. Johab could be more influential in Heavenly politics, and in the War, but while most Archangels are concerned with the "big picture", Johab is the only one who routinely concerns himself with the human condition on a personal level. Other Archangels think his vision is too narrow, that he expends his resources on the petty problems of insignificant mortals. But Johab loves mortals too much to abandon any one of them for "the greater good", and so he and his servants continue trying to save mankind, one soul at a time. He is very fond of the story of the little boy and the starfish stranded on the beach. Surprisingly, the most compassionate and warm-hearted of Archangels is an Elohite. No other member of this Choir can display such empathy and still remain detached, but while Johab loves the humans he has sworn to protect, his vision is never clouded by the confusing emotions and self-deceptions that are the gift and the bane of humanity. When encountered on Earth, he usually appears as a handsome, well-dressed man of indeterminate age, with a warm smile and a deep, soothing voice. Johab's servants have two primary responsibilities. The first is the physical safeguarding of humans; it is Johab's servitors who flit about the Earth rescuing souls in peril, guiding search parties to hikers stranded in the wilderness, invisibly pulling drowning sailors out of the water, or merely comforting someone trapped in a mineshaft while waiting for the rescue crew to dig a tunnel to them. They can't save everyone, of course; there are too many humans in distress, and too few Angels of Salvation. But when someone speaks of being saved by a guardian angel, there is usually a servitor of Johab smiling in the background. The second task that Johab's servants perform is salvation in a more figurative sense. They seek out troubled souls, and try to set them on the path to redemption. Angels of Salvation often take Roles as doctors, therapists, parole officers, rehabilitation counselors, crisis center workers....and of course, priests. Johab is not as strongly pro-Christian as Laurence; faith can bring about salvation, but faith is non-denominational. However, as Christianity does have a strong evangelical bent, and is the most active religion when it comes to promoting charity, forgiveness and redemption, Johab's servants are more often associated with Christianity than any other faith. Johab is very forgiving; he never becomes angry with his servants, no matter how badly they've let him down. He will tolerate greater levels of dissonance than any other Superior, so long as the offending angel is truly remorseful and was acting with sincere good intentions, and he will erase Discord in his servitors after they perform a suitable act of contrition (usually involving something humbling that reminds them of their purpose, such as serving in a lowly capacity as a mortal's assistant, for instance.) However, angels who prove themselves recalcitrant or totally incompetent may be assigned jobs like eternal school crossing guard, permanent lifeguard at a retirement home swimming pool, or the Angel of Clean Lint Traps. It should be noted that the Archangel of Salvation considers Outcasts and demons to fall under his jurisdiction also. No one is more in need of salvation than the Fallen, and while his servants must naturally oppose the nefarious plots of the enemy, they are also charged with ministering to them. Angels of Salvation are ever on the lookout for a demon who seems uncertain about his commitment to Evil, or for an Outcast who is genuinely seeking to redeem himself. This has led some of Johab's well-intentioned angels into well-crafted traps, but they consider the reward of bringing a Celestial back into the Heavenly fold worth the risk. DISSONANCE It is dissonant for an Angel of Salvation to turn away from anyone in need of help. This often causes them problems, as being forced to choose between two mortals in distress still causes dissonance. However, if forced to abandon one soul to save another, they can erase the dissonance they incurred by returning later to help the one they left behind....if it's not too late. CHOIR ATTUNEMENTS Seraphim Seraphim of Salvation are charged with bringing Truth to those who are deceiving themselves and others. When they question someone, the subject must make a Will roll to avoid answering truthfully. (Balseraphs add their Celestial Forces to their Will roll to resist this power; if they fail, and are forced to tell the truth, they will suffer a note of dissonance!) This is useful for interrogations, but Johab's Seraphim also pioneered the "tough love" approach to therapeutic counseling. Cherubim Cherubim of Salvation are usually assigned to a mortal who is on the brink; it is their job to guide mortals towards salvation, turning them away from the dark path where the enemy would lead them. They always know when an action taken by someone to whom they are attuned is moving them towards their Destiny, or their Fate. Ofanim Ofanim of Salvation are rescuers, constantly moving from one soul in peril to another, often arriving in the proverbial nick of time. When using their Resonance to speed to the aid of someone in distress, they may add their Celestial Forces to the check digit of a successful roll. Elohim Johab's Elohim are able to not only read a subject's current emotional state, but his history as well. They specialize in uncovering the reasons for a person's behavior. They can make a Resonance roll either to search for a specific memory, or to "replay" a specified point of time from the subject's memories. The check digit of a successful roll is how many minutes may be observed, and also determines how far back in the subject's memories the Elohite may see; if he was trying to see something further back than his check digit allows, there is no effect. The total of any Discord(s) possessed by the subject is added to the check digit of their Resonance rolls. Kyriotates When a Kyriotate of Johab possesses a host, the subject is temporarily cured of his afflictions. For as long as the Kyriotate possesses someone, he may reduce a number of levels of Discord equal to his Celestial Forces. So, a Kyriotate of Salvation with 4 Celestial Forces could eliminate a level 4 Discord, or reduce 4 Discords by one level, etc. This is, in effect, an improved version of the Celestial Song of Harmony. Mercurians Johab's Mercurians are so inherently cheerful and friendly, you can't help but like them. Something about Mercurians of Salvation inspires trust, so that total strangers will open up to them. Add the angel's Celestial Forces to all Reaction rolls. SERVITOR ATTUNEMENTS Jack-of-all-Roles This attunement is given to angels who travel from one assignment to the next. Often called "caseworkers", they take on a temporary Role that allows them to be in close contact with their subject, and then move on to the next soul in need of saving. The angel must buy a Role normally, but the Role is changeable; one week the angel can be a policeman, the next week an opera singer. While temporary, the Roles are as "real" as any other Role for as long as the angel stays in it, and no amount of background checking will turn up anything amiss. Note that only one Knowledge Skill comes free with the Role; others must be purchased normally (so an angel taking on a temporary Role as a policeman will still appear rather ignorant of police procedures if she hasn't purchased Knowledge Skill: Policeman.) Annunciation This attunement allows the angel to reveal herself in all her divine glory, and speak the words of the Lord. For 1 Essence, all mortals will be Stunned for as long as the angel is speaking, and will believe everything the angel says. (Whether they act on it is another matter, but most mortals will consider very deeply anything told to them by an angel of the Lord!) DISTINCTIONS Vassal of Salvation The angel can tell at a glance what is troubling a person. Whatever problem weighs most heavily on someone will be known to the vassal. Friend of the Suffering By studying someone, the angel can read his or her entire life history, in summary. This does not grant the detailed information that an Elohite of Salvation can obtain (above), but the Friend will know all the most important details about the subject's life Master of Redemption A Master of Redemption can heal all the hurts of a redeemed soul. At the GM's option, an individual who is deemed to have been saved from a dark fate or turned away from a life of despair, or made a true act of reformation, can be healed of all Body, Mind and Soul hits, for a cost of 6 Essence. Dissonant angels can be healed in this manner upon ridding themselves of their dissonance. A Master of Redemption can not directly take away an angel's dissonance, but she can tell the wayward angel what he must do to erase it. RELATIONS Many Archangels think Johab is too concerned with the plight of individual humans, but few dislike him. Michael thinks Johab is much too soft, and Dominic mistrusts him. For his part, Johab opposes Dominic's severe judgments, believing that both mortals and Celestials should be given an opportunity to redeem themselves rather than being summarily judged and punished. Johab works closely with Yves when it comes to guiding individuals towards the bright Destiny that Yves seeks for the universe as a whole. And Eli has become Johab's personal case...while Eli denies he is need of salvation, Johab is concerned for him nonetheless. If that's vetoed, put me on the list >for it. >Nathaniel Eliot >temujin9@ix.netcom.com Well there haven't been any objections... US Satanism in In Nomine As a word of warning, this is a fictionalized version of two very real organizations. Some of what is listed as "fact" is information intended for game play. For the game, I've given the stats of the founders (listing them as word bound to their respective organizations) hopefully fairly accurately. I hope this will be used in someone's game as either foes to foil or as allies to work with. For further references, both of these organizations have information on the web, including FAQUs (or for a good laugh, check out the shenanigans on alt.satanism- which is available on Deja News). Finally, I hope that the following descriptions have remained unbiased between the two organizations and that my own personal choice has stayed out of the description. Church of Satan The Habbalite calling himself Anton Szandor LaVey got his start in San Francisco in the late fifties and early sixties giving lectures on various occult topics. LaVey spun many tales of his beginnings; he claimed to have worked as everything from a lion tamer, to an organist at a strip club, to a police photographer. None of these claims, however, have ever been truly verified. When these were met with moderate success and a small following of disciples for LaVey, he decided to capitalize on his success and found a new satanic organization. On April 30 of 1966 (a witch's holiday known as Walpurgis Night) he founded the now infamous Church of Satan. From that night he set forth recruiting new members and putting his brand of Satanism in print. Slowly, his base of followers began to grow, including a few famous persons, due mainly to his philosophy of indulgence and his strong charismatic personality. It hasn't been a bed of roses though. Along the way, there was the auto accident which killed Jane Mansfield. LaVey took personal responsibility for this; he felt it was a direct result of the curse he put on Mansfield's lawyer, Sam Brody. The truth, as far as anyone knows, is that some of San Francisco's angelic presence, in an attempt to frustrate LaVey into not completing his work, arranged to have to Mafia tamper with the brakes of the car the two rode in. This ploy almost worked, but LaVey steeled himself, and near the end of 1969 he released _The Satanic Bible_. The public reaction was overwhelming for LaVey. His book became a best seller, and he became the foe for the more conspiracy-minded Christian churches. This success led to him being granted the word of "The Church of Satan". Modern Satanism hadn't been born, it had been given a high-profile make-over, and Nybbas couldn't have been more amused. Anton LaVey Habbalite Captain of Swank The Demon of The Church of Satan Role/4 Charisma +2 Vessel/2 (Human male) Corporeal Forces :2 strength 3 agility 5 Ethereal Forces: 3 Savoir-Faire (int)/2 intelligence 7 Knowledge-Occult (int)/3 precision 6 Celestial Forces: 5 Artistry-Music (per)/1 will 11 Emote (per)/4 perception 9 Lying (per)/1 Seduction (will)/3 Singing (per)/1 Songs: Charm (cor./3 eth./3 cel./4) Attraction (eth/2) Entropy (cor./3 eth./4 cel.3) Attunements: Soundtrack, Subliminal Special Rite: As the demon of the Church of Satan, he gains two essence whenever someone joins. Notes: LaVey usually fulfills Nybbas' dissonance conditions through interviews or as a film consultant, although he's finally branching out into the Internet). Roleplaying Tips: LaVey is forever a showman. He will always present himself as a mystery man, but warm and sensual as well. He almost always wears a small smile when dealing with those outside his church. Rarely does he answer questions directly, if at all. He will never admit to making up any of his background; anyone who tries to find the truth about his childhood will be met with open hostility. One interviewer who had the nerve to ask for an interview with his father was met with the response "You have such a lovely family, it would be a shame if anything happened to them." The Temple of Set When Hell's princes got word of Nybbas' plans for a new religious movement (the Prince of the Media is not known for being a tight- lipped demon) Baal, as commander of the War against the divine, felt it would be best if he sent one of his servants to make sure that nothing went out of line. This servant,a Balseraphim who used the name Michael Aquino, joined LaVey's church at it's founding and started maneuvering himself through the ranks. LaVey, naturally a little suspicious, allowed Aquino to rise to the highest rank in his organization. He hoped that by doing this, Aquino would decide that there was no cause for Baal's attentions. Tension escalated between the two. Finally Baal had gathered enough information. He realized that, indeed this method did bring in souls for Hell, but it brought them in under Nybbas' domain. This was clearly unacceptable. If a so-called satanic church was to help win the War, then it should be one of his army to lead it. In 1975, Baal gave Aquino permission to start his own church, the Temple of Set. Many of the teachings were similar to LaVey's, but Aquino put in more mysticism and ritual. It grew much more slowly than LaVey's; it didn't have the media recognition of the Church of Satan, but it's members proved more loyal. Things were going well for Aquino, both his church and his military career were proceeding well. Then in 1988, Aquino made the mistake of appearing on the talk show Geraldo, for its "Satanic Special". This was to be Aquino's biggest mistake. When his higher-ups in the US Army got word that one of their lieutenant-colonels had appeared on a talk show to discuss his satanic church, it was decided that something had to be done to get rid of him. Before the year was up, Aquino found himself in the midst of a court martial trial, accused of molesting a young girl. Guilty or not, Aquino was given his discharge papers. Baal was infuriated at Aquino. The only thing that kept Baal from scattering Aquino's forces to the wind was the success of the Temple of Set. Aquino's problems with the Presidio Case (as it was named for the Army base where he was accused of child molestation) followed him into cyber-space. When he decided to take his organization onto the Internet, he found himself confronted by a mysterious woman calling herself Curio Jones. Curio has taken it upon herself to keep reminding the world of the Presidio case. Aquino has tried every way he knows to find out who she really is- everything from tracing her account to suing her Internet provider. Nothing has worked, and for a good reason. Curio Jones is the name taken by a young Kyriotate of Lighting who has taken it as her job to stop Aquino's Internet activities by eliminating his respectability. Their fight continues to this day, recently Aquino lost a lawsuit he brought against Curio's ISP to try and force them to reveal her identity. Roleplaying Tips: Aquino presents himself as an honorable warrior. He will be civil and polite to anyone, as long as the Presidio is not mentioned. If a genuine question is raised, he will explain his innocence. If questioning persists, or if accusations are made, he will drop all pretences of politeness. Repeat offenders will find themselves in direct confrontation, usually through a lawsuit. His articles are notiorious on alt.satanism for their length, and every so often his formalized reply to Curio is reposted. *Dorothy Michelle Bixler * mudmh10@ecom.ecn.bgu.edu* "Gidget, have you been laying with the Horned One again?" -MST3K's Mike from "The Thing the Couldn't Die" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Oct 1997 17:22:47 EST From: "PERRY M. Impudites genuinely like humans (on average). A Djinn can act nice, pretend to care, and stab the humans in the back without a second thought.
