Move Silently/5, Tracking/5 Songs: Charm (Corporeal/4), Attraction (Celestial/5), Form (Ethereal/4), Healing (Corporeal/5), Motion (Corporeal/4) Artifacts: Sword of Flames (Level 5) which is similar to the fiery sword but has the additional power of burning more fierce when pointed at a individual who is guilty of the crime Azrael is charging him with. The sword is also a reliquery able to store up to 5 points of essence. It gains 1 point of essence at dawn. The Sword of Flames has a power of 5 and a +2 acuracy. It appears to be a brass sword hilt, seperated from the blade. Azrael must spend 2 points of essence (either from the sword or himself) to summon the blade. This is requires no concentration from Azrael and only he can use the sword. Attunments: Elohim of Fire, Friend of the Divine Spark, Smite Special Rite-Destroy the guilty (+2 Essence) Background- Azrael is a bit of a mystery to most celestials. What is known about him is his fervant dedication to his Superior Gabriel. Some even question if perhaps Azrael might be on very intimate terms with the Archangel of Fire. What is known about him is that he mysteriously appears, destroys his target and then vanishes again without so much as a word. He has no role that people know of, although it is entirely possible he does have one, just shrouded in mystery. In most cases he keeps to himself and is almost always silent except when facing his target. Then he can usually be heard saying is a death like utterance "You will know he is the Lord when I strike my vengence upon thee!" ************************************************************************ I hope you like him, I think he'd be an interesting character for the characters to meet if they are angels, or to scare the dickens out of demon characters. This sword was unearthed in Israel a few years earlier by an American Archeologist named Dr. Samuel Arbrige. The sword was named for the strange hebrew word written on the hilt which translates "Burden of Knowledge" and an unknown set of Cuneiform on the blade. Since it's discovery the sword has been carbon dated which the results came back inconclusive as to the exact age of the weapon. Up until a week ago the sword was in a collection of weapondry on display at the New York Museum of Natural History. That is until a group of unknown theives broke into the museum and left with the collection. This has baffled the police as the thieves gave no sign of entering or exiting and were not recorded on the surveilance cameras, even though the alarms still went off. A few days later an antique dealer disappears without a trace. In the dealers store are most of the swords in the collection. However a few of the swords are still missing; the Sword of Masayad is one of them. Along with the swords the police found at the dealers store that there was missing a journal of an eqyptian archaeologist. The Journal detailed several of the archaeologists finds including a tablet that had writing on it that he had never seen before. He published his findings as a new form of Cuneiform with ties to Hebrew but he was laughed into poverty. The archaeologist apparently sold all his belongings before finnally giving up and ending his own life. What is so special about the journal is that it is needed to use the sword. The archaeologist had translated a good deal of the tablet and his research is recorded in this journal. In order to use the sword the bearer must know what the writing on the blade reads. The game is based around the PC's search for the thieves, the recovery of the sword and possibly the usage of it. The villains in this can be anyone that the Gamemaster feels fits the mood, but I suggest that this be an involved plot with several princes involved in it. Some of my initial thoughts are that servitors of Asmodeus is involved (someone on the police erased the video surveilance files at the museum), Nybbas (the media coverage of this has been extremely thin), and Valefor (the thieves were experts at what they were doing). Other Information: As far as how the characters come to be involved in this is up to the Gamemaster. However one thing that I have detailed is exactly what the Sword of Masayada does. This is all detailed below. The Sword of Masayada It is uncertain when the Sword of Masayada first came into being. The carbon dating done on the sword detail that it was created aprox. 500 BC but this is extremely untrustworthy because they came up with several conficting datings. The sword is three foot long from hilt to tip, with an additional foot for the grasp. The blade itself is fairly wide similar to a broadsword blade. Needless to say this is a large weapon. In corporeal combat this weapon has a power of +5 and an accuracy of +1. It does not rust and can only be destroyed by taking 15 hits from a single strike. However it's combat abilities are not why most seek to find it. The sword is the only known item to posess the Songs of Knowledge. These songs (prehaps created by Yves) are very powerful and a posessor of the sword is a formidable foe indeed. As well the sword is also a reliquery which can store up to 10 points of essence but can be used only by the sword. Each sunrise the sword gains one point of essence but an additional point of essence can be gained if it is in a museum or library at dawn. Needless to say it was fully powered when the thieves stole it. - --Corporeal--(4) The Corporeal Song of Knowledge allows a user to know the exact location of a specified individual on the corporeal plane. The sword however has to have made contact (touched, hit, held, etc) with this individual within the last 168 hours (7 days). - --Ethereal--(4) The Corporeal Song of Knowledge allows the user to peer into an individual's mind and see their worst fears and upmost desires. Like the Corporeal Song, the sword has to have made contact with this individual with in the last 168 hours as well as the individual must be within 10 ft of the individual when this Song is used. - --Celestial--(4) The Celestial Song of Knowledge allows the user to alter an individual's experiences and knowledge. This song can be used to make an individual forget about something, remember it differently or totally alter their perception of an event. The song functions like the previous two except that in addition the sword must make contact again with the individual for the song to be used. The individual is allowed a Will roll in his/her defense. If it succeeds, his memory is intact, and the user of the sword cannot try again for (individual's will) in hours. If it fails, then the memory of the individual is at the whim of the user. Essence Requirement: 2 Degree of Disturbance: the Check Digit plus four. ************************************************************************ Hatcher Rhanyr "The Angel of Bright Shiney Teeth" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 11:38:51 -0500 (EST) From: HarlinHirs@aol.com Subject: Re: IN> Shedim and Divine Tethers In a message dated 97-03-06 09:59:01 EST, John Karakash writes: > Yeah, but a tether to What? The things you discribe may be true in a "dystopian world" where everything it pretty much going down the toilet, but in a realistic world it is not the case at all. The "technicalities" that are so often refered to are your CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. Even with the incredibly (some would say overreaching) strong protections of our rights, there are horrible abuses. Often the police will, with only some small suspicion, break into a house, ransack it, and when they find nothing say "oops sorry". The person who was illegally searched has ALMOST NO RECOURSE against such an action. As a one time Public Defender in Atlanta, I happen to know that it is very rare that anyone indicted of a crime does not end up at least on probation, and almost everyone indicted on a serious crime (robbery, rape, murder) spends some serious time in jail. (I personally handled an armed robbery where the PLEA BARGAIN was for 20 years in jail. No one was harmed, and the stolen item was recovered.). Only the very lucky or the very rich can avoid serious trouble merely by being indicted. Note that these are not convictions. These are indictments by a grand jury whose only evidence is often the police report. Divorce law is still catching up to the modern era, but it is making great strides. It is suffering from the transition of divorce being an EVIL to the No-Fault divorce. It used to be that a woman could only get a divorce if she could prove her husband was sleeping around or beating her up. Often at this time, the woman never had a job and often never went to college. When that occured it made sense that the man would be punished and forced to support her. It has only been within the past 20-30 years that women have been prominent in carreers and about the same time the No-Fault divorce was allowed for 'irreconsilable differences'. The judges were still used to giving strong sanctions against the husband, but they are getting better. The 'she got what?' cases are fewer and farther between each year. Again, in a fantasy world it can be however you want, but after seeing "The Practice" (Motto: They hate lawyers too) on TV, I am sore about the RL reputation of attorneys. There have to be as many good attorneys as ... say ... Used car salesmen. :) John J. Maurer esq. On is in the MIT Media Lab, and is to Jean (this one was a spontaneous tether, and might more rightfully belong to Eli, if he were around), the other is a very old one of Yves, in the Harvard library. I'm still thinking about demonic tethers in the Boston area, but haven't settled on anything. Farther away, there ought to be several in New York City. At the very least, there ought to be of Marc's on Wall Street, and one of Nybbas' on Madison Avenue. Possibly also one of Nybbas in the antenna forest on top of the World Trade Center (at least, I think there's an antenna forest there...). My current speculation is that the number of tethers in an area ought to be roughly proportional to the population, with exceptions for notable places that concentrate people with a particular Word-relationship. I'm thinking roughly one tether of each direction per 100,000 population. Thus, most reasonable-sized cities will have at least one each, angelic and demonic, and huge cities like New York may have a hundred or so, including some to lesser Archangels that aren't yet described as major figures. - ---Walter ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 14:01:27 -0500 From: "John Karakash - Lucent ASCC" Subject: Re: IN> Why Johnny can't breed... or can he? Funny you should mention this. I just finished an article titled, "Mommy, Where Do Angels Come From?" and sent it on to the upper heavens for review/approval. I can answer your questions, but they are very much My Opinions Only. Well, that's not entirely true since Derek looked at some of it and didn't say it was flat out _wrong_, but then again he didn't say it was all _correct_ either! ;) #1) Yes. The process is a bit different and much less deterministic and sure. #2) Yes. #3) No. The essential element, the soul, is missing from the mix. Three elements are required for Corporeal breeding: 1- Two souls, one per partner ;) 2- Essence expenditure (to provide the seed for the new soul) 3- Body compatibility and capability #2a/#3a) A Kyriotate or a Shedim in a host can breed the same as another angel/demon in a regular vessel. #4) If Lilith had children, they would follow the same rules, presumably, as other celestials breeding. More non-canon stuff follows... The offspring of a celestial and a human is either celestial or human. There is no 'middle-ground', though humans with celestial genes are much more likely to become sorcerers or soldiers. No guarantee, though. Because of the Grigori, celestial genes are pretty well spread through all branches of humanity. (The population geneticists out there can probably confirm this. Small initial population, the traits are generally beneficial ones.) - -- ___________________________________________________ / \ |John Karakash - Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T) | | (919)380-4629 | | "A fundamental principle of economics is that the | | more you tax something, the less you get of it. | | In this country we tax success most of all." | \___________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 14:03:04 -0500 (EST) From: IQJason@aol.com Subject: Re: IN> Tether locations Well, if you want to talk about Tethers in New York City, you can't ignore the Deuce. Otherwise known as the area from 40th to 45th street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, the Deuce encompasses Times Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. For decades, it was established as a Tether to Andrealphus: a little bit of Shalamar on earth. As of the past few years, though, the place has been nearly entirely bought out by...Disney. Filled with shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions. In other words, Marc's kind of place. yours, - -J ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 15:16:22 -0500 From: "John Karakash - Lucent ASCC" Subject: Re: IN> Tether locations > My current speculation is that the number of tethers in an area ought to > be roughly proportional to the population, with exceptions for notable > places that concentrate people with a particular Word-relationship. Did you say a HUNDRED tethers?! IMO, even ONE tether is something to write home about and more than a dozen, even for the largest, most important cities would be pushing it hard. - -- ___________________________________________________ / \ |John Karakash - Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T) | | (919)380-4629 | | "A fundamental principle of economics is that the | | more you tax something, the less you get of it. | | In this country we tax success most of all." | \___________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 15:27:53 -0500 From: "John Karakash - Lucent ASCC" Subject: Re: IN> The First thing We do... > Again, in a fantasy world it can be however you want, but after seeing "The > Practice" (Motto: They hate lawyers too) on TV, I am sore about the RL > reputation of attorneys. There have to be as many good attorneys as ... say > ... Used car salesmen. :) Well, there are so many more of them, they have the advantage of numbers! Percentage-wise, who knows... ;) My own experience with attorneys is rather mixed. I have a friend he is, or was, an attorney. He chose to become involved with local politics and his 'peers' revoked his license on a bogus charge of some sort. He had just gotten a divorce, so he had neither the time nor money to fight the action. He was forced out of politics and is driving a cab until they decide to let him back in. It was made quite clear to him that had he not tried to run for office, nothing would have happened to him. I realize that this is an isolated incedent. But other lawyers I met are far more interested in the rules and winning than the law. Lawyers are, despite rumors to the contrary, human with human vices. But they, along with certain other professions (politicians, police and others), have greater powers than most. That saying about power corrupting is solidly rooted in fact. Lawyers write the laws for lawyers to interpret. Isn't there something very _unhealthy_ about that? Laws should be written by lawyers for _the rest of us_ to interpret and, if necessary, modify or eliminate. - -- ___________________________________________________ / \ |John Karakash - Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T) | | (919)380-4629 | | "A fundamental principle of economics is that the | | more you tax something, the less you get of it. | | In this country we tax success most of all." | \___________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Mar 1997 07:29:04 +1000 From: "Patrick O'Duffy" Subject: Re: IN> An Adventure Seed Hatcher Rhanyr wrote: > > Here's an adventure seed I managed to come up with....please tell me > what you think. PCs hunt the magic item, fighting past the demon guards, and gain big-arse magical powers. There's even the usual 'must find how artifact works' problem, solvable because you found the instructions earlier. It's all a bit too... It's fairly powerful, and it tread sinto an area that IN seemed afraid to go - namely, interfering with the minds of others. Save for Possession, there's no way for a Celestial to tamper with a human's mind directly. That's something I like - it means they have to work to fulfill their purpose, which (hopefully) leads to roleplay. In case I'm being too negative, I will say that I like the idea of a game centred around the search for knowledge. One thing I like about IN (and WW's MAGE, another fave) is that a lot of it revolves around non- combat, non-mechanics-related things (like learning, or doing good, or doing evil). Lots of things that get roleplayed out rather than relying on dice rolls. It would be excellent to have knowledge and learning be the centre of an story. I'm just not crazy about having that idea be boiled down to the hunt for a magic sword. Just my opinion.
