Maybe that's O.K. for some people's games, > but its not how I want to run things. Well, it's great for mine, but I really do draw heavily from Good Omens and The Prophecy for influence...(from the first, the idea that there are Angels who, though basically good, aren't..fanatic about it, and likewise Demons who can be basically evil without being drooling toothy things. From the Prophecy, I very much picked up on the point that even without Falling, Angels can be REALLY scary - these are guys who get sent down to kill people, demolish cities, and order people to take out their own kids. To me, Angels can be even scarier than Demons, because Angels are doing it because they CARE...) But, obviously, that's me... > But what about Angels who neither want to beat up on demons *nor* want to > protect humans? That seems to be what is required for a truce. I don't think it's required at all, as noted further on...it seems to me that Angels who aren't either working against demons or for humanity probably aren't on Earth duty... (I'm having some trouble figuring out any other reason they'd BE here. It's not like Jean sends them down for chips and Mt. Dew while he goes through this week's marathon debugging...) > > The first of these might ally with demons for strategic advantage. > A pragmatic Angel could do that, but they would then take the knowledge > and use it to fight with. Oh, certainly, but that doesn't invalidate the possibility of a limited truce. I can't quite see either side doing an absolute truce, but a kind of, "As long as YOU behave, I won't beat up on YOU," can make a lot of sense. (The Austin story seemed to have that as a core tenet; the idea of OTHER `angels', from either side, had everyone worried because they wouldn't be part of it and might disrupt things.) Even a Malakim, in my view, could make a strong case for that; if a Demon is making that good a source of information, then killing them off would entail letting a number of OTHER demons live...{Okay, I admit - that's a Malakim who's probably going to be chopped up by other Malakim in a week or two, but as I've said before, I tend to shade their Oaths a bit according to their Superior.} > > they care about humans, and have seen the way indiscriminite warring can > > take them out on the sidelines... > Human death is pretty insignificant compared to Damnation. They're only Damned if they make their Fate. There are most certainly Angels who justify the wonton slaughter of innocent bystanders with that point, and from the perspective of the War, they have a good point. However, I think there are a LOT of Mercurians who'd disagree with that kind of "lesser of evils" justification. ("Well, yes, it may be insignificant compared to Damnation, but it's NOT insignificant to his three-year-old daughter, Carry, who, I'd just like to point out, my friend Ed - yes, the Seraph of Yves - just informed me is now going to be brought up by her now-single, broken mother, who can't afford to raise them both, and therefore turn to a life of prostitution and quite probably end up working as her pimp's connection selling drugs to preschoolers...meeting HER Dark Fate, which she never would have if you hadn't offed her dad because he happened to be momentarily inconvenient. Nice going, Mr. Sword Of God.") ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 20:47:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Kim Foster Subject: IN>Drew Angel of Sexuality This is my first attempt at a Word Bound Celestial and posting a character. I think of him as an Archangel who, over the millenia of his own success, got drunk on his own hubris. He then started making ill-advised accusations against fellow Archangels, as well as associating with one of the most powerful Diabolicals in Hell. I don't think these are unrelated, nor do I think Dominic's really evil in his own right. I simply believe that Asmodeus is attempting to manipulate Dominic. One of the powers that the half-breeds have is their ability to >manipulate the symphony. This is my version of magic in the game. Well, everyone (celestials, Soldiers, spirits, even humans, in their own way) have the ability to manipulate the Symphony in some way. What I felt would separate the mages from the more, shall we say, unsubtle movers and shakers is that they do what they do *with absolutely no disturbance of the Symphony whatsoever*. (I thought about applying the same rule to Soldiers, but as it in in Night Music, Soldiers cause the same disturbance as celestials, which is also fine). My thinking was: humans, be they mages or mundanes, are an integral part of the Symphony, as opposed to celestials, which exist outside it. Whatever a human does, the Symphony wraps itself around their actions, whether it involves simply driving to work or moving a small mountain. Celestials, on the other hand, have to use brute force to change the Symphony from the outside, hence the disturbance. With this in mind, mages could be *really* powerful. Almost unlimited abilities, no Dissonance or disturbance, and (in the case of Cain) the ability to draw Essence out of anything. A good mage is more than a match for most Celestials, including the Word-bound, and might be too much for even some Superiors. The downsides? Well, they're mortal. Dead is dead - it's just a lot harder to deliver the killing blow to someone who can warp reality with a though. Second? It takes a long, long time to become a mage of any potency. Adam's been at it for over 3000 years, Cain slightly less. Anyone who doesn't trip on the secret of extending one's lifespan early on in their studies simply isn't going to life long enough to do much. >If anyone is familiar with Vampire:The Masquerade, Cain was the first >vampire, condemned by God to feed off the blood that he spilled. I rather >like this background for him. I haven't made plans to include vampires >in my games but if I ever do this is how I'll do it. Yeah, there's a lot of WoD crossover stuff in here. The vampire stuff is very deliberate, the mage stuff less so. The Cain stuff in V:tM is really good, and fits well in with In Nomine. It is simultaneously more and less than I'd like. Fortunately, the sections on Austin and Furfur don't take up all that much space (and they still seem very out of place, though I understand now why it might be arranged as it is). The Superiors section was really nice, and it has cemented my agreement with the idea of an book 'o Superiors. Fleurity has one of my favorite "The world is..." quotations to date. Mortals was both good and bad. The general backgrounds stuff was interesting, and the play ideas are somewhat handy, but...why all the example things? This is probably yet another idea that most other people appreciate more than I do. Less examples would have been better (especially if the place could have been taken by more general ideas on Mortals). Question: Are Saints immortal (on Earth, that is)? The description of Michael's long-term plan is sort of odd - it sounds like they'd have to be...but how does one remain as an agent in place without blowing their cover if they /don't/ age? The Resources section was fairly useless. The Discords are okay, and only take a page. Given IN's lack of emphasis on rules, why did Derek take so much space on various drugs? A large part of each entry is basically a description of what the drug does. Honestly, I'm getting sick of repeatedly buying these descriptions, and they take up way too much of the book. Oops - I'm tangenting a bit. Anyway, given that someone should know or easily be able to learn what a drug does in real terms, and IN is really rules-light, I don't see any kind of need for the bulk of the drug rules or descriptions. Austin...well. I didn't like it. Just the intro story was pretty much enough to send me off to the phone for Dominic (or Asmodeus, whatever). I'd much prefer more of a detente feel to any area that had a truce...unless the point was that both the angels and demons had totally chucked their respective beliefs (which would be its own interesting campaign, but doesn't appear to be the point of IN Austin). Curiously, the very intresting and helpful "When You Got a Job to Do" is tucked into page 104, amidst all the Austin stuff. Obviously, a plot to lure me to the dark side of the book...:) The Demon Prince of Rock and Roll...would have made an excellent short story. The premise is funny as hell, which seems to be something Derek Pearcy is really good at writing (stuff that's FaH, that is). Is anyone actually planning on setting their game in Austin? In general, it seems like it'd be more fun to not have a fully-populated town already then shoehorn the characters into it. Hmmm...last thought. Why would Fleurity ally with Saminga? It says he did it for protection but...couldn't he have worked a deal out with someone who might actually be aware enough to help him, and who doesn't just increase the degree to which Andre (and others) hate him? As it stands, Fleurity seems to have made one of the worst picks he could have. "The world is a drug, and I am, as they say, The Man." ...and Lawrence should be archangel of Glam Rock, because that's exactly what he looks like. Really. In light of his popularization of and contributions to the neo-classical subgenre of metal all Right Thinking Persons have forgiven Mr. Malmsteen for the glam-rock turn his later musical career took. (Although I personally am still slightly miffed with him for the way he mangled Carry On Wayward Son.) So lay off and pick on a more deserving target. (May I suggest Quiet Riot?)
