Origen, one of the early church fathers, puts forth an idea to explain the two different creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 in which the Gen. 2 account ("Male and Female he created them") is a spiritual creation, and that Adam and Eve are purely spiritual beings at that point. Genesis 1 is the actual physical creation story, where he "forms" first the man and then the woman. Note that Origen is considered heretical by the Roman church, and I think that the explanation is a stretch, but interesting nonetheless. Someone challenged me to, instead of doing a series of attunements, convert something to In Nomine. I asked that person and he/she suggested Spawn. It struck me as being odd that no one had done a conversion before. The comic book goes a lot into the diabolical side, and sees things from a kind of warped and twisted perspective. The job was dissicult, since the In Nomine dice system is hardly flexable (No offense to SJG, cause I think its great. You arent supposed to convert things over in the first place, right?) In Any Case, I present to you Spawn (As I have seen, represented from the HBO series, which is excellent, and the movie, which sucked. I also yanked a bit from recent comic book issues.) Spawn, AKA Al Simmons. Al Simmons was a government assassin from the NSA. One of the best in all of history. Simmons had more recorded kills of innocents than any other man in history (Surpassing even Adolph Hitler, how I have no idea). He was feared by the intelligence community worldwide, and feared by anyone who knew his name. Indeed he seemed Bound on Track to his Fate. Until a servitor of Yves got to him. Simmons learned what evil he was doing. Despite his hard exterior, he was infact, a good man at heart, and Yves recognized that. When the diabolicals learned of the Angelic interference, they assigned a New Soldier of Hell as his partner. By the name of Chapel. When Simmons announced that he was retireing, a slight bit of Lilim interference made Jason Wynn, his boss order his execution. The Angels found out too late, and Chapel, his one time partner and trusted ally, burned him to a cinder. Simmons was not dead, but Chapel boxed him in a Coffin and shipped him overseas. Simmons died on that boat, leaving behind his wife, Wanda (Who was the only person in his life he truly loved) Simmons' soul seemed lost to the angels forever, until that is the L:ord Of Lies found out about him. Lucifer came to Simmons' tortured soul, and offered him a deal. Upcoming was Armageddon (Sp?), and the Mortal's needed a leader, someone they could rally around, gathering strength for the final battle. Lucifer wanted Simmons to be that man and, in exchange, he would get to see Wanda again. Naturally Simmons agreed. Simmons was sent back to earth, only to find hell had doublecrossed him. His memory was erased, with only fragments left. Add to that fact it was 5 years later, and Wanda had remarried... to his best friend. Now hell wouldnt send off someone this 'potentially' dangerous without some kind of guide. that guide was named the Clown. In actuality, he was a demon servitor of Kobal who applied for the word of Clowns. Lucifer gave it to him, but in a way that the Clown REALLY didnt like. Clown's appearence is that of a short fat, unappealing Clown with an odd sense of humor. Heaven, upon learning of the Hell Spawn (This wasnt the first time Luci Tried this), sent one of thier own men after him. A Redeemed Elohite of Destiny, named Coloigesterio (I think, its hard to find his name). This artifact was implanted in Spawn upon his acceptance of his agreement. The chains are controlled by mere thought on the part of Spawn, and extend 8ft from his body. They have HIS strength, and can entangle, strangle, entwine, ect. They retract into Spawn when he does not need them, unless he is Angry or Concentraiting. The are called Chains of misery, cause they bind you to the Corporeal Realm. Spawn CANNOT Assume celestial form, nor ascend to the celestial plane. He cannot 'see' celestial beings UNLESS they can assume thier celestial form on earth. Shroud of Pain. The Cape of Spawn is a Body Length shroud that is blood red. Its main purpose isto hide Spawn's features, but it also acts as a shield, protecting him from corporeal bullets. it also helps him blend into his surroundings. The Wearer of the Shroud spends no essence to power songs, and heals instantly. However, Hell has control of his dreams, and knows where he is at all times, as long as he is using the shrouds powers. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- John T Perkowski, Ofanite of Arcade Games Maker of Attunements (Go ahead, Gimme a word and some details, and in 24 hours, you'll get yerself some attunements). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 09:29:47 +0100 From: Julian Breen Subject: Re IN> Lilith's Status Earl wrote: > >Actually, in the game I'm in, we've run it the other way. The Whore of Babylon..? I've been toying around with a few thoughts recently on Lilith and her unique make-up. I'm thinking that Lilith, like the Grigori, *could* mate with humans without the need of Songs. This might explain why certain legendary figures (such as Gilgamesh) were referred to as _lillu_ ('men with demonic qualities'). I find it quite likely that it was Lilith, along with Andrealphus, who actually instigated the downfall of the Grigori. Quite possibly on her own initiative rather than Lucifer's direct orders. This seems especially likely if she *is* capable of easy interbreeding. Following the demise of the Watchers she would be the sole being left with this capability. This would be yet another resource ensuring her continued value to Hell. - -- Julian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 14:07:55 +0100 From: "Bene-Elohim" Subject: Re: IN> The Final Trumpet and Khalid Firstly, I've not actually managed to get hold of The Final Trumpet yet, so forgive me if my comments are wildly off the mark. I understand that he is the patron of Islam, but I don't have a problem with him having attunements or rites that are not specifically Islam. I think the problem is an underrepresentation of Islam in the game, not the material on Khalid. Perhaps we need an angel of Islam, a powerful servant of Khalid who was once his right hand man, but as Khalid has moved closer and closer to falling they have moved apart. Faith is a big and powerful word, and is not restricted to religion, I could see angels of Faith working with angels of Stone, to instil humans with faith in themselves. Faith (including belief) should be a very powerful word, almost everyone believes in something even if it's nihilism. Laurence is the patron of Christianity, but that's not what he is, he is the Archangel of The Sword, the Supreme Commander of God's Army on Earth. Christianity while important to him, is not the priority. Similarly, Khalid's main focus should be Faith, with Islam as a fairly major but not exclusive sideline. Archangel's such as Novalis, have widened the scope of their word as much as they can, yet it seems that Khalid has narrowed his, and weakened himself immeasurably. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 14:35:04 +0100 From: Julian Breen Subject: Re: IN> Lilith's status In message , Jayson Howell writes >Well, I'm back on the list, which means that I'm not dead. It says that the conditions are harsh, which I can believe; temperatures fluctuate from near freezing to 110 degrees (Fahrenheit, I assume) with little water. It also says that while the conditions won't kill a celestial, they might lose a vessel. Why? Vessels do not require food or water and the FAQ says that they're immune to temperatures roughly between freezing and 100 degrees, and that extremes beyond these are mitigated. So of the listed dangers, we're left with just sandstorms, to which we can add venemous snakes. If this is all that's left, it isn't all that dangerous; man-killing sandstorms aren't very common in northern Iran. Am I missing something here? It doesn't seem more dangerous for a celestial than driving on a freeway. And with Khalid's experience in the desert, this isn't much of a test of his faith. As a related question, can a celestial in a vessel become physically exhausted from exertion? The FAQ says that they do not become tired, but it isn't entirely clear whether this refers to fatigue from effort or a need to sleep. J. There is probably some truth to this, but let me come at it from a slightly different direction. Perhaps, as the Angel of Faith, he _has_ to believe in what he promotes. It is not within the scope of his Word to be the Patron of Islam unless he actually has Faith in it. It might not have even been conscious on Khalid's part; he started promoting Islam for his own reasons, perhaps in opposition to Laurence's promotion to the position of Gneral of the Host. Once he started doing this, he inevitably became a believer. For it is fairly clear from Khalid's write-up that he _does_ believe in the Truth of Islam and is not its patron simply for the practical benefits, as seems to be the case with Dominic and Laurence supporting Catholicism. This is an element of his description that I like and plan to keep in my modifications. It is also somewhat easier to square Islamic beliefs with the IN canon, though certainly not entirely. It will probably entail a change in Khalid's choir, but I thought that Faith was a Word that is a bit, uhm, non-objective for an Elohite anyways. J. More like natural parts of his rather disturbed personality. Ugly and Burnt seem to be different names for the same thing. The needs I don't agree with. A Need is something that must be attained or accomplished every day to allow the character to regain essence naturally. A Need for Wanda? Does he need to see her? What? Does he need to get revenge once a day to regain essence? The other problem is that his stats are ungodly! (no pun intended) A corporeal forces of six I could get. He's been boosted by the power of Hell, and he is a combat monster by nature. But not ethereal or celestial. This would give him a literally superhuman intelligence, precision, will, and perception. In addition to which he would be more powerful than almost every demon he encountered except for a prince. He could get rid of the Violator like he was scraping gum off his shoe. My advice: Scale down the ethereal and celestial forces to about 3 or 4. Keep the skills. They're high, but that's why he was chosen. Get rid of the unnecessary discord. After downing a few pints, they went out to kick the crap out of some old furniture that had been dumped behind the station and discuss their next campaign against the Chelsea supporters. Business as usual. Nutter doesn't bother with dressing, because he hadn't bothered to undress last night -- he throws a few darts at a photocopy of the Chelsea football team which is pinned to his wardrobe. He is a good shot and gets the manager right between the eyes. Then he feeds his rats and sticks them into his pockets. Admittedly, he doesn't need to sleep 11am -- Nutter goes down to the job centre When Nutter arrives at the poky little office, up two narrow flights of stairs in a building where all of the windows are boarded up, the regular staff start to look worried and try to make excuses to go for tea breaks. He collects his benefits once every two weeks, and always manages to break some of the furniture. No-one has ever dared to send him a bill. He waits in line sulkily, complains loudly about the state of the country and talks about football. Someone behind him dares to support a different team; Nutter decides to ambush him in an alleyway later. The nice man at the desk asks Nutter what he has been doing to try and find a job over the past fortnight - -- Nutter boots the desk and says he is overqualified for labouring jobs, and observes that he knows where the nice man lives. The desk collapses. The nice man exchanges worried looks with his supervisor and decides not to press the point. 11:45 am -- Nutter cracks his knuckles Much as planned, Nutter carefully follows the supporter of an enemy club as he leaves the job centre, making sure that the other man notices that he is being followed. In a deserted tunnel under a main road, he trots past the man, casually slamming his head into the wall as he does so. He stops to boot the victim once he is down and tells him 'it wouldn't happen if he followed a real club' -- sure it makes some disturbance, but so what? 2:30pm -- Nutter meets his droogs[1] After spending a few hours hanging out near some shops and spending all of his allowance for the next fortnight on a new leather jacket, Nutter goes down to the Working Men's Club to play pool with Fivebellies and some of his mates. They discuss tactics for that night's match and phone round a few other friends to make sure there are going to be a decent sized gang of them. Nutter gets annoyed and breaks his pool cue after losing. They do a few dodgy deals to fence some stolen videos. 4pm -- Nutter gets stopped by the pigs On his way home, a police car slows as one of the officers inside recognises Nutter, a regular in scenes of crowd violence. They ask him what he has been up to and taunt him. He throws stones at the car as they get bored and head off, and it suffers an unexpected flat tyre. Nutter legs it, he can't be bothered with the police. 6pm -- Another night, another fight Nutter meets up with Fivebellies and the rest of the lads. They practice kicking in an old door at the wasteland and pretend that it is someone's head. They head down to the football ground, despite not having tickets, and bluster their way in. After the match, they manage to clash with another gang from the visiting team in a messy and bloody manner that is eventually broken up by police. Frustrated by losing their targets, Nutter remembers that there was an angel he was supposed to go after and drags his mates down to its house. Although no-one seems to be in, they smash the place up and write football slogans all over the walls. 11pm -- Chucking out time Nutter et al are thrown out of the Old Bell at closing time. As they head off, Nutter (finally) manages to detect some disturbance (Hmm.. someone is singing a song of shields?) and figures out fairly quickly that the target of that afternoon has had time to collect some help. He takes his mates down to the wasteland to wait and gets them into combat positions. Sure enough, trouble comes in the shape of three shadowy figures. Time for an old-fashioned hit and run. Nutter picks one of the defeated enemy up and takes it back with him, to occupy the rest of the night in slowly tearing it apart whilst discussing his personal political outlook. - -- Nutter is a hard bastard, but he does have a soft spot for two creatures in his life. He secretly adores his little pet rats, which were once wild (he says 'they used to be free-range rats') and scrounged around his old squat. After he caught them and fed them, he decided to keep them because they annoyed his balseraph captain. He named them Marx and Engels and spends his happiest hours sitting alone in a room and reading selected excerpts from the Communist Manifesto to the rats, who contentedly sit on his shoulders and listen (or doze). He will be very reluctant to harm either of them, even if they are possessed. If anything should happen to either of those rats, expect extreme violence to follow the perpetrator. - -- [1] Anthony Burgess, 'A Clockwork Orange' -- excellent book, I've no idea about the film because it was banned from being shown in the UK by the director and when I've been abroad I have usually been too busy destabilising foreign governments to watch videos. - -- Jo's (desperately out of date) homepage --> http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~jhart/index.html Jo's (bland, plagiarised and devoid of ideas) IN page --> http://www.btinternet.com/~jhart/IN.html - -- ** Some of the above is indubitably true ** ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #962 ******************************* The material here is (C) 1997 Steve Jackson Games, Incorporated.
