Buddhist In Nomine Part 1: Thumbnail Buddhism Buddhism's tenants are: controlling the mind over emotion, nonattachment, nonviolence, and teaching others. If you maintain a Buddhist lifestyle well you become a Buddha ("awakened one") a Soul who posses complete knowledge. Part 2: Buddhas The ultimate goal of a Buddhist is to become enlightened and become a Buddha. This comes usually after countless lives and deep meditation and is very rare. No more than a handful of Buddhas should be used in any campaign. When a Buddhist attains Buddha-hood, the Soul remains on the corporeal realm but is suddenly, through epiphany, granted complete knowledge. This includes not only the corporeal realm and the Symphony but also the Marches, Heaven, Hell, Limbo and the Higher Heavens and Lower Hell. The Buddha generally needs to concentrate to view or understand anything outside of his surroundings and this viewing maybe sensed and stopped by any Archangel or Demon Prince in the area surrounding the viewing. The new Buddha undergoes a state change, become part Celestial, part Ethereal and part Corporeal. He may create a Celestial or Ethereal form to enter those realms, even if he is in his body. Once the Buddha is killed, his Soul enters the Ethereal realms where he may draw essence to create another body. Buddhas may use one of two means to the creation of a body. One way is to create a vessel as other souls, like angels, demons and ethereal spirits, do, or he may be born again in a new body. If he chooses to be born again, the Buddha usurpers the proper soul intended for a baby and is born into that baby. The Buddha remains completely in control of his memories, powers and celestial and ethereal forces but must grow up and gain corporeal forces as humans do. Once in the corporeal realm, the Buddha usually works to spread the teachings of Buddhism among his fellow men. More at a latter point. It is 2 am and I am sleepy. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Feb 1998 02:35:15 -0400 (EDT) From: gantr@NKU.EDU Subject: Re: IN> Circle of Valor On Fri, 30 Jan 1998, tom timberlake wrote: > Any other "angelic sewing circles"? Here's one from mine: - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE DRAGON COURT - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before Uriel's Purge, there were a number of angels (servitors of Dreams and Creation in particular) who spent much of their free time with the Etherial creatures of human myth. Because their founder (the Malakim Aslan) spent so much time in the company of the Great Dragons, they came to be mockingly known as the "Dragon Court". They were generally ignored, as they were seen as eccentric. Then the Purge came, and they became suspect. The Dragon Court came out in direct opposition to the Purge after it spread beyond the destruction of the pagan gods; they misdirected and hindered the servitors of Purity to the best of their ability. Matters came to a head shortly after the Great Dragon Stalax was slain. The servitors of Purity who slew her returned to the Corporeal realm to destroy her eggs, only to be blocked by Aslan. Words were exchanged, tempers grew. Nobody is sure of exactly how it started, but Aslan and the Malakim servitors of Purity came to blows. When the battle ended Aslan was gravely wounded and three of the Malakim of Purity had lost half of their Forces. Aslan was taken before the Seraphim Council to stand trial for his crimes, only to accuse Uriel of destroying the hopes and dreams of humanity with his Purge. Aslan was punished with having more than half of his Forces stripped, but his stature in Heaven was such that his accusations against Uriel could not be overlooked. Uriel was brought th Heaven to answer to the Seraphim Council, and the Purge was ended. The modern Dragon Court is an "underground" organization in the ranks of Heaven. Outlawed by the Seraphim Council, they still meet to pursue their goals. They wander the Corporeal and Etherial realms, seeking survivors of the Purge and smuggling them back to Earth. They believe that as the embodiment of human dreams, the Etherial creatures will aid the cause of Heaven by inspiring humanity to greatness. Membership is difficult to obtain, and dangerous to posess. It comes with no respect, no authorization, and the potential to have one's Forces scattered by the will of the Seraphim Council. But to the members of the Court, the risk is worth it. Whaddya all think? Well, now I know who got the Unicorn's that Felix, Cherub of Jordi in the Eternal Dawn PBEM, with help from other Angels of Animals, got evacuated from the Corp. Plane [Earth] way back when. He took the Unis to Jordi and where they went from there is something Jordi knew and Felix didn't--what he didn't know, he couldn't give away under questioning. It was while celebrating this success that his alarm system kicked in, just moments before four Malakim fed Felix a heapin' helping of dissonance as they slew a young stallion Unicorn and a nested family of Gryphons [father, mother and one hatchling] that Felix had used his Cherubic Resonance on, who hadn't yet been evacuated from Earth. I imagine quite a few of Jordi's Servitors were in The Dragon Court, since the physical manifestations of these mythic beasts fell under Jordi's word, and these would have been more than a little bit cozy with such Great Beasts, and the Court that supported them. I woke up thinking "Wow, this would make a great In Nomine plot!" But before I get the story fleshed out I knew I would need a few questions answered, which is where those of you in the know come in and BTW thanks in advance. The main perpetrator in this story would be a demon who once was in service to Andrealphus but whose darker nature eventually pulled him over to Saminga. Andre just couldn't handle having a servant who kept killing sexual partners, or something along that vein. First I thought the demon should be a Calabite, but then I reconsidered, finally thinking that the psychology of the role really required one of the Shedim. Up until now, I hadn't needed to look at Band attunements for Saminga and once I read the attunement for Shedim it didn't seem to make any sense, which is where the question(s) come in. Unlike Kyrios, Shedim have access to their hosts thoughts, feelings and memories, the host being fully aware of what he/she is doing while the Shedim is in control, etc... also "They aim not only to keep people from doing things that generate benevolent Essense..." Now, the Shedim of Death attunment allows the Shedim to possess corpses. First I'm assuming that that is not exclusive, but includes corpses in addition to all the other living humans a Shedim would ordinarily be able to occupy. Second this begs the question, Do corpses have thoughts, memories, feelings for the Shedim to have knowledge of? Does a Shedite have some impression of what they were? Of course these are silly questions, but they lead up to this: How do you corrupt a corpse in order to avoid dissonance? With all the topics that have been brought up, I apologize if this is an area that you've already covered. If I can get this story line worked out (after your help) perhaps I'll submit it to the list. Thanks again. -- Thom D. (SienarFLT@aol.com) Impudite of Peanut Butter in service to Haagenti, or ... He's a bit of an unusual Malakite by the standards of the list, but the Malakim IMC are more a divine order of knighthood rather than Heavenly heavies. Next on my list is the Rev. Brenda Douglass, preacher at a radical liberation theology church and soldier of God serving Dominic. - ---- Aaron Malak of Stone "No I will not live and die -- not by the sword For I am weak without the joy of the Lord" - -- Sixteen Horsepower, "For Heaven's Sake" Statistics: Corporeal Forces 3 -- Strength 7 Agility 5 Ethereal Forces 2 -- Intelligence 4 Precision 4 Celestial Forces 4 -- Perception 9 Will 7 Vessel: Vessel/2, Charisma +1 (Rugged looks), Role/6 Status/1 (Rock singer) Skills: Dodge/4, Fighting/1, Large Weapon/4, Emote/3, Singing/6, Guitar/3 Songs: Celestial Tongues/1 Artifacts: Flaming Sword/1 [Aaron is a valid starting PC.] Appearance: Aaron is a big, broad-shouldered guy, around 6'2" and 180 pounds. His face is battered and weathered, which makes a sharp contrast with the pure black of his eyes. He doesn't have an ounce of fat on him, but has the lumpy musculature of a laborer, instead of the sculpted look of a bodybuilder. He wears his hair in a ponytail, wears grungy jeans, and otherwise fits the mold of a blue-collar guy making a living as a singer. Image: Unlike most Malakim, Aaron does not try to play high status. Instead, he plays down his own strength and capabilities, ascribing his successes to divine grace and his failures to his own weaknesses. He tends not to meet a person's gaze, and moves with a loose and casual ease. When he starts fighting, he has the economy of an experienced fighter rather than the parade-ground perfection of most Malakim. Story: Narly every one of the Malakim finds a group of people on Earth whose code of honor they find personally significant and important. Some admire the elegant fatalism of the samurai, others the gallantry and courtesy of Western chivalry, and others still admire the businesslike courage of a modern soldier. While Aaron admires those codes of honor, what he finds most moving is not the honor of people who are powerful and armed. It is the poweful courage of the desperate and oppressed that moves him most. The simple effort of people struggling to find joy and faith in the faith of horrible travails is what moved this angel to weep. On Earth he works to increase the joy of people who live hard lives, trying both to make their physical conditions easier to bear and bringing faith to heal their spiritual condition. He spends his days working for Habitat for Humanity, building homes for the homeless and advancing David's cause on Earth. During his nights, he is the lead singer in the band Joyful Noise. It's a perfectly ordinary small-time rock band, and while they are unlikely ever to hit the big leagues, Aaron is content to bring people together and to God one small group at a time. While almost all of his music has religious themes, its style is much more blues or hard-rock than gospel or spiritual in nature. His songs tend to convey a wailing, almost despairing quality about the difficulty of mortal man facing temptation and an esctatic joy in the power of faith. One of Aaron's secret hopes is to jam with the archangel Michael; the word is that no one plays the guitar like the angel of War. Feel free to toss this out as a Need to any Lilim who scans him. David knows, and is amused enough to rib Aaron about it from time to time. (David likes Aaron enough to ask Michael for the favor, but Stone is not known for its speed.) All of Aaron's compassion, however, makes him even less tolerant than most Malakim (!) about tolerating the Infernal. The lives of the people he helps are too hard already for him tolerate the parasitic presence of demons. Anyone willing to live and let live with Hell will find little comfort from this angel. - ---- Neel Krishnaswami neelk@alum.mit.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Feb 1998 22:27:03 -0500 From: Jesse Subject: Re: IN> Aaron, Malakite of Stone >During his nights, he is the lead singer in the band Joyful Noise. I seem to recall that there was an archangel of Compassion (Sunya), that I wrote up, being particularly attached to the Buddhist mortals. I tried to hint that Buddhists might use the same rules as other mortals, but they recognized their fundamental inter-connectedness with all things. The "abilities" granted by Sunya reflected this knowledge. I'm not sure if Buddha's aren't quite simply too powerful creatures to be intricately involved with the campaign world. I mean, God and Gods are left to the realm of the GM, so shouldn't we let such amazingly enlightened beings pass outside of the realm of player understanding? Now, Bodhisattvas are a different matter (depending upon which tradition you follow), but I believe IN already has rules to deal with such beings, or at least has borrowed the concept and made it their own. (I confess, I have only the original game in my possession - I should probably fork out the money and purchase all the other resource material!) Thus, perhaps once a being becomes omnipotent, they should pass beyond the realm of corporeal affairs. A truly wise / inter-connected / compassionate Bodhisattva, on the other hand, would be within the power-level of angels/demons. Perhaps we're arguing semantics here. I don't know. I just think that knowledge of that level should be left to the GM. I mean, c'mon, people get nervous around Yves' servitors, with their minor level of insight... can you imagine how freaked out they'd be hanging around with a Buddha? Just my thoughts on the subject. I tend to like my games fairly low-power level. Others will probably differ.
