Characters may be Angels, Renegades, Orphans (no Discord, +5 CPs on creation) or Soldiers of God, but must have at least a minimal Role in either the United States military or Texas National Guard. The players are part of a loosely organized regiment under Colonel Sarah Kelly of the US Army using guerilla tactics in an attempt to build enough strength to restore USA rule to Texas. It is known that the colonel is somehow involved with Celestial affairs, but how, and on what side, is anyone's guess. A detachment of Colonel Kelly's force has just captured a train running into Palestine, Texas with some civilain passengers... including a leather-black Discordant demon who claimed to be a servant of Valefor. Said demon was wounded but not killed, and it is not known how many of the twenty or so other passengers are Celestials. No visible Discords will be allowed, considering the situation the characters will be in. Much like this message, but at least I marked it appropriately. Use your heads, folks. It's a reality of the Internet that webbots are periodically going to pick up the mailing address to in_nomine-l and cause us all to be subjected to irrelevant spam about computer bargains or the latest, greatest get-rich-in-60-seconds scheme or sexy Russian babes who want to have a meaningful relationship with you just as soon as you send your credit card number. The appropriate response is to send a complaint to the postmaster of the domain from which the spam originated. (Of course Elizabeth will do that herself, in her capacity as list administrator, but it can't hurt to have a few more people bringing the matter to the postmaster's attention, since the more people who complain, the more likely that the postmaster will be motivated to cancel the account of the spammer who gave him this headache.) If it makes you feel better, you can also send a nastygram to the spammer himself (though usually the return address will bounce). But I am constantly amused/disgusted by the fact that after a spam hits a mailing list, we then get at least half a dozen people replying to it as if anything you say about the spam on the list will have some kind of effect other than to waste more bandwidth. I hate spam. I loathe spammers. I keep score on how many spammers I succeed in getting disconnected by their ISP, and I've even been known to call the 1-800 numbers some of them send and fill their voicemail with the most noxious heavy metal music I can find. But bitching about it ON THE LIST does nothing but multiply the inconvenience and decrease the signal-to-noise ratio even further. - -David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 17:35:07 -0500 (CDT) From: Shadowcat Subject: IN> Shattered Dreams Greetings. I should note that to find this, you usually have to look two "Received" headers back from the last one that mentions "io.com", pick out the IP address (usually 4 numbers separated by periods, in []), and look that network up at ARIN to get the ISP who was the actual input location of the spam. It will usually turn out to be a dialup port. (This assumes your mailreader can be coaxed into showing you the Received header lines - -- most don't by default.) All this is necessary because most spammers use bulk email programs that carefully obscure the origin of the spam. you can figure it out, but it takes effort. When you complain to an ISP, try "abuse@" first, then "postmaster@" if the abuse address bounces. Most ISPs prefer spam complaints at "abuse". (UUNet wants them sent to "fraud", however.) If the spam gives a URL, you also want to do a "traceroute" on it to figure out who is giving it service, and copy them on the complaint. I also complain to "upstream" providers, if the ISP isn't one I recognize - -- if the endpoint service provider *is* the spammer (which isn't all that uncommon), complaining to his abuse address isn't going to do any good. Note that the From: and Reply-to: header fields are almost universally forged in spams these days -- only the most clueless spammers will put useful addresses there. >If it makes you feel better, you can also send a nastygram to the spammer >himself (though usually the return address will bounce). This is generally a *bad* idea -- it gives the spammer another "known good" email address to sell to other spammers. Nearly any spam that tells you to get off the list by replying to the message is fishing for additional addresses (or the reply address will bounce, as invalid, and the removal instructions are just a "feel good" thing for the clueless). There are a number of web sites that give detailed information about how to deal with spamming. One of these that I can remember off the top of my head is www.stopspam.org. - ---Walter ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 13:58:15 -0400 From: John Karakash - LUCENT ASCC Subject: Re: IN> Errata Needed? The third book "Liquid Dreams" is very good, though you wil have to be very mature to use it without the game falling apart. It concerns sex in the dream scape.
