Or, to be a bit more helpful, there's no current answer. There are two options for "corporeal" objects in the celestial realms: the first is that they are "relicized" much as Mammonite contracts are (see S4), and the second is that there exists a skill or Song that makes what I usually think of as "Essence constructs." An "Essence construct" is Essence bound into a form considered useful. Such as a chair, a wall, drapes, or food. One does not necessarily get the Essence back by consuming the item. However, the hopes of getting a scrap of extra Essence somehow probably makes demonlings of Gluttony hang around underfoot hoping for scraps as much as the urge for the taste and feel of the food. Maybe the series is his engagement gift to her: she will always power up to *just* the point she needs to messily dispatch whatever horror she runs into. :) I just reread the series and watching a heroic monster hunter slowly turn herself into a sociopathic murderer is not as much fun the second time around.[*] I mean, as of _Obsidian Butterfly_ we discover that she's now more of a hard-ass than *Edward*. I'd personally make Anita an unknowing soldier of either Baal or Malphas myself. Her sense of honor argues for Baal, but her ability to turn merely tense situations into brutal spasms of graphic violence argues for Malphas. I was hoping Richard would turn her around, but at this point I don't think anyone short of Novalis can fix her head. > Ah! Well, we know demons exist in Laurell K. Anita (who has obviously become one of the most powerful supernatural entities in North America) describes entering the mere presence of a demon as an exercise in sheer terror. Maybe that was a Demon Prince though. There's a bit in Nancy Collins' _Sunglasses After Dark_ in which Sonja Blue meets a minor demon (which has inexplicably adopted a skate-punk style) who fills her in on current goings-on in the Descending Hierarchy. There are demons powerful enough to go head-to-head with God, but the ones she talks to weren't in that class. This seems like a reasonable way of interpolating IN into the Anitaverse, since the archangels and demon princes fit the latter role and the So angels and demons would remain at In Nomine power levels, but they should be fairly familiar with all the major supernaturals, since one of the cool bits of IN is that you get to play the people behind the scenes. This means that while a physical supernatural like a vampire or werewolf might be able to take down an angel or demon, but they shouldn't have many tricks not known to Heaven or Hell. The big types of Anita monsters are various varieties of zombie, vampire and lyncanthrope -- the others mostly occur off-screen and don't play a major role in her novels. So you can warp them as needed for your campaign. (Except that the Greater Mountain Troll is now extinct. :) Zombies & Animators: Anitaverse zombies are modelled perfectly well by IN zombies. Just remember that they can be raised by animators, who must make a blood sacrifice to raise them. Chicken or goat blood usually works, but a very old corpse will require a human sacrifice. Saminga's attunement works well to model the animator gift, if you add the blood sacrifice requirement. Just pretend the power doesn't come from Hell. (Or if you are feeling mean, then it does -- after all, the Pope is down on animating the dead.) Lycanthropes: They can shapeshift. They are as strong as vampires, they really are as fast as they seem, and only silver hurts them. However, most werewolves shift with the moon and have no power to change voluntarily. So far we have seen wolves, rats, and leopards as weres. It makes sense that most other predatory mammals have lyncanthrope forms, too. Mechanics: Just make a regular human who turns fuzzy on a lunar basis. Then add two Corporeal Forces, and note that they regenerate their Corporeal Forces from all non-silver sources of damage. An alpha can change at will, though they quickly become exhausted. Vampires: Vampires in the Anitaverse seem to have, at a minimum, the following powers: o Mesmerism o Super-strength o Regeneration, except against silver, fire and blessed weapons Their weaknesses: o Blessed objects, fire and silver all do extra damage to them, though a cross or the like will only work for the faithful. o They burn up in daylight o They cannot enter a place uninvited o Their animating spirit departs during the day o They must drink human blood to survive Many people think they have super-speed, but that's really just vampires mesmerizing their prey. This is pretty much it for lesser vampires, but an unspecified combination of age and brass stones lets a vampire become a greater vampire, at which point they can get many other types of powers. There doesn't seem to be any real limit to the types of powers a master vampire will exhibit, beyond the fact that any given master will have only a few (and the more powerful the master the more powers it has). Mechanics: o Strength: While the novels suggest that even the weakest vampire is vastly stronger than the strongest human, the IN rule system would break if we tried to shove in super-high attribute levels. So we'll just make them strong: when a human vampirizes, they get an extra Corporeal Force, which can only be added to Strength. o Vampiric mesmerism: Vampiric mesmerism basically functions as the Impudite charm, with the limit that a vampire must first catch its victim's eye. If the victim is actively trying to avoid a gaze, the vampire must win an opposed Precision contest. Unlike Impudites, their mesmerism doesn't convince o Modelling vampiric regeneration: Recover your corporeal Forces in body hits each turn automatically. A master vampire might recover faster, or might even be immune to certain categories of wound. So, a typical lesser vampire in IN terms might look like: Corporeal Forces 3: Strength 8 Agility 4 Ethereal Forces 2: Intelligence 4 Precision 4 Celestial Forces 2: Perception 4 Will 4 Powers: Vampiric mesmerism, regeneration Discords: 3-6 levels of Vulnerability(Sunlight, Silver, Holy Objects) A master vampire might have more Forces (sometimes *many* more), and will have more powers. It might lose one or more of its vulnerabilities (silver is most common, and it never loses its vulnerability to holy things), and it will frequently have the ability to command Angels and Demons; As in IN. Note that an angel counts as a holy object versus vampires. Pissing off a Malakite is a real lose, isn't it? Given that PCs have 9 Forces, they -should- be able to boss around lesser weres and vampires, and will have to tread more warily around master vampires and alpha werewolves. How common angels and demons are depends on whether you want to add an Anita Blake flavor to IN or add a few IN critters to the Anitaverse. [*] At first, Anita Blake would kill monsters, but had an absolute rule against killing people. Then, she discovered that monsters were people too. So she dropped her rule about killing people. This was not the conclusion I hoped she would draw. :) - -- Neel Krishnaswami neelk@cswcasa.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Nov 2000 22:24:16 GMT From: "Jo Hart" Subject: Re: IN> Evil Thought #4534/b4 (vii.) >From: Maurice Lane >Reply-To: in_nomine-l@lists.io.com >To: in_nomine-l@lists.io.com >Subject: IN> Evil Thought #4534/b4 (vii.) >Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 12:52:48 -0800 (PST) > >Vapula. > >Saminga. > >Eli. > >Steampunk. > You missed out Marc, for the Victoriana. Have i ever let you down Kenny?" replied the Malakite as he plunged the dagger in to his vessels heart, sending himself back to his real _heart_ in the Groves. Kenny stood there, in awe as the vessel disapeared in a flash of dimmed light, no matter how many times he worked with Arakel , no matter how many times they had saved each others lives, Kenny still had doubts, but those doubts never got in the way of his duty. Kenny took stock of the situation, trying to remember how it came to pass that he killed a Daughter, and found the proverbial pot of gold that the hordes of Baal, failed so miserably to protect as he simple walked in the old submarine base, but they picked up on things when what must have been a Balseraph, found out that he was lying about his forged base pass, he recalled how he managed to call out to Arakel how he had been shown, and they managed to dispatch half the navel base and find what shelter they coud for the past three days whilst halve the states demons hunted them down, trying to get back the blue prints that Dread Techno Lord Vapula had given to Baal for the submarina secret base. ================ Arakel was by his heart in moments, the icey chill of Trauma fleeing his celestial body, with his wings out stretched he launched him self skywards to find a Wheel, barely a moment had passed when one all but crashed in to him, with lightening fast reaction he grabbed one of the Wheels rings, pulling him closer, calling out in heavenly tongue for the location of his lord, the Battle Master Michael, the Wheel spun in agitation at being held and tore away from Arakel calling out for him to follow, and that His lordship lay not too far from where they were in the air. The Wheel sped in to the distance leaving a firey trail for the Malakite to follow at his own breakneck speed. ================ "Trexia, you thrice damned fool, you said you could locate them, you and your partner are worthless. You are nothing but feaces in a maggots brain, do you understand?" the Calabite prodded one of the twins infront of him, he was ordered by none less than his Dark Prince himself to find the documents, and not only that but The Lord of the Game had given over two of his pets as aides in the task. One of the twins turned to the hulking brute of a vessel, the one not being poked, and spoke in a sibilent hiss. "Barcley, we are finding them, you have no appretiation for the finer points of the hunt, you wish only to rend and destroy, but you can not do that unless you wait for us to do our task, and talking to a waitress who, when paid enough, is more than willing to tell us which train they took, and even what they were wearing for clothes and what that poxed Malakite was wearing for a vessel, seeing as we're unable to locate one of his vessels we will assume that the other is in use and we are indeed correct. Now that we know this we are able to locate them much more adequately. Never hunt on false or bad infomation, it will lead you to your heart, whch will probably be in your Lords grasp to smash shoud you fail." With that said the Kata'im turned back to his 'brother' who nodded in silent agreement and the pair walked off leaving a confused Calabite and a very confused waitress in the train station coffee house. With a growl the Calabite stormed off after them muttering to himself. "huh, they think its their show, i'll get them before the credits..." ================= The ginger haired kid with big glasses watched the screen, his slaves and servents attending him, feeding him popcorn and soda, his eyes never leaving the screen. "Dang i sure am glad i had them there Necklaces of Video Capability made for these guys, har har they'se so darned funny, gimmee more popcorn NOW" A Daughter fed him and smiled as a small black silver ring appeared through her navel, thinking it's so easy getting geases from Nybbas. ================= Michael stood there, a stave in hand as several attackers came at once for him, one fell over his own stave, another tripped over him, leaving only six to think about, with a few deft spins and lunges each of the celestials fell to Michaels counter attack. Then from out of now where a Wheel rushed past him, he spun, throwing his stave, catching the Wheel a glancing blow that spun him off in to a group practicing in the far corner of the groves before he came to a slight stop then sped off again, following the Wheel was another celestial, Arakel LongWinged, one of his corporeal specialists. Michael stood there as Arakel came to a rushed yet graceful landing, both bowed from the waist only slightly before embracing. "My Lord, we have trouble, one of my human freinds and i managed to find the plans as requested by yourself and Lord Jean, but they are some how anchored to the corporeal realm, i was unable to bring them with me. But Kenny is in trouble, there was many after us, many were dispatched, but some still hunt us, i have never seen their like before, they hunt in a pair, with a Calabite handler, they had all but found us a number of times and we are no where near any freindly units or Tethers." Michael stood there, a slight smile on his face, looking at Arakel knowing that he spoke Truely, and waited until his servitor grew silent, awaiting orders. "So, Arakel, are you formally requesting aid? If so then i am sorry, no one here is able to help you, there are those who would love to, but they would find the Trauma to condemning should they fail. No, Arakel, my LongWinged one all that i can offer you is praise should you suceed. If you fail then be sure to bring back some knowlede of these demons that you have ne'er seen the likes of before, there are only three of them and two of you, that is more than ample an amount for a fitting victory. I do not expect failure in this matter my freind, you rarely fail me, and at those times it was never your fault. And to be sure that you do not fail me i ask that you swear an Oath to me, one that you find fitting, so as to prove your love and sword to the lord our God." The crowd of celestials that had gathered stood in silence apon hearing Michael ask for an Oath from one of his most valourous and honourable angels. Arakel kneeled before Michael, hands clasped before him, his wings stretched as high and far as they possibly could, then he looked at Michael, in to Michaels eyes and spoke for all to hear. "I, Arakel, the LongWinged, doth hereby swear that i will never ask for assistance even when the odds over whelm me, for if i am to die then that is my destiny, for i shall sit in the gaze of our God, and that shoud i live, then that shall be my Destiny as well for the lord doth see that his Sword shines and it shall never be dull against those that oppose him" Arakel stood, as he did so he felt chains about him, new bright silver chains, they did not impede him, but the gave him strength, he turned and jumped high in to the air, streaking towards a way down to earth, to be with his freind once more, righteous fury alight in his body. =================== Kenny looked about from the window of the appartment he had found empty of life other than rats and cockroaches, he wished dearly that Arakel was with him, it had been a little over a day and he had not returned, perhaps the Host had forgotton about him he thought, perhaps he was alone, with the hordes of hell chasing him. He took a look around the apartment, looking for anything at all usefull and was pleasently surprised when he found a number of matchboxes, and a number of cleaning fluids that if he could remember rightly from college, would make a fair explosion if mixed and agitated enough. he looked about some more and could have sworn that plastic piping wasn't in the bedroom the first time he looked in there, he set to work with the fine blade that Arakel had given to him the day he 'signed up', he started to ponder the fact that if he was going to die, then so was whoever got near him. ================= pt 2 in about 8 hours, i hope you like it. and there is a soppy twist in it that in no way reflects how i run my games. *g* Nick *walks away knowing that little of all that is said will ever be taken notice of* _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. The series is about Anita, whose job is to raise the dead as zombies for the purpose of settling will disputes and the like. She is a necromancer, meaning she has an incredible link with the dead. The way vampirism, magic and lycanthropy are presented in the books is very interesting. - -- Timothy, Angel of Rambling Ofanite of Creation ArchRival of Mathus If you have time to kill, why not kill it at http://ucsub.Colorado.edu/~grothtp/In.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 00:08:34 -0000 From: "Genevieve Cogman" Subject: Re: IN> Anita Blake (was Saminga in Love) - -----Original Message----- From: Whistling in the Dark To: in_nomine-l@lists.io.com Cc: ebergese@haywire.csuhayward.edu Date: 02 November 2000 00:13 Subject: Re: IN> Anita Blake (was Saminga in Love) >Right. I'll ask, if no one else does? >Just who *is* Anita Blake? A character in a series of books by Laurell K Hamilton, in an alternate modern-day-Earth universe where the supernatural exists, where vampires are legal citizens, zombie animators do it as a business, Faerie Lore (and the like) are possible college courses, and lycanthropes who get "outed" can count on being ostracized much like AIDS sufferers if in any occupation which might get close to accidental blood transfer -- or anything else sensitive. (One major werewolf NPC would probably lose his job as a teacher if word about his nature got out.) Anita starts off as a talented animator, with a spare line in police consultant on the supernatural, and as a known vampire executioner (it can be done legally if the vampire starts murdering), known to vampires as The Executioner. The first book ends with a line of "I'm the Executioner. I don't date monsters. I kill them." As the story continues through the books, her abilities develop into fullscale necromancy (which seems to involve powers over practically any sort of undead) and she gets psychically bonded to a werewolf and a vampire. I'll leave a discourse on the merits of the books to others, but that's basically what she _is_, and her moral development (or degeneration) is much as Neel described. You know, one could cast her as a Soldier of Purity (or the Sword) who's gone totally over the edge, developed an innate talent for necromancy, and now leagues herself with those monsters that she approves of/trusts/loves/whatever in order to destroy those who she defines as "worse"... I picked up Suppressed Transmissions II this afternoon, and I can already feel my mental outlook warping under the strain. Based on previous evidence, I should be in an Altered State for the next few days, so the stuff I post might be a little odd. I can't recommend Ken Hite's Pyramid columns (of the same name) enough, BTW, especially if you're in or running a campaign with conspiracies and Secret Histories.* Glorious stuff there... and it'll be completely, utterly expected by your players. Morgan (SAW) Kyriotate of Destiny Petitioner for the Word of This is even better than IN Steampunk. My brain might actually explode. *Which IN is. By the Sacred Records of Gloriana, why has no one sat Mr. Hite down and shown him the whole new range of High Weirdness available through an In Nomine lens? I mean, the note on William Blake alone indicates that he has not been exposed to IN: he manages to describe the perfect Soldier of Divine Fire, _and_ _he_ _doesn't_ _even_ _know_ _it._ Zounds. :) ===== In Nomine stuff: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Everything else (not that there is, right now): http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/main.html Last updated 9/5/00 (this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thanks for bringing this up Charles. Now this makes an interesting question that no doubt will perplex many in heaven. Is their an Angel (Archangel) of peace and if so is she/was she a servant of Michaels? Honestly it might make very odd sense for Michael of all the angels to have Mercurian/Seraph/Malakim (whose foresworn violence)/Elohim/or whatever serving the word. While Blandine and Novalis are also possibilities...it makes a odd certain sense....oh and of course Uriel. In my opinion Michael's word means Struggle, Taking the fight to the Enemy, Methos for doing war, Protection from Evil, Vigilance, Defense, Gaurdianship...and most of all is the Word of "Questing for Truth". By the time that word is over then Michael will be at the time when no need of Revelation etc is required and hopefully can go to the Higher Heavens with Yves and Litheroy and the rest of the Archangels. Unless he requests God make a new world so he can lead a whole NEW crop of folks to do so :-) Michael's status as the strongest Archangel may be belayed by the fact no one understands his word quite as well as people think they do. Also Asmodeus and Baal share the same word like the Angels of final Judgement, they just don't realize it and thus why neither of them can ascend to Michael's power level (and thus oppose Lucifer). Well, the whole point of being an Impudite is that you have Essence to burn... but yes, I agree. IMC Impudites have made better NPCs than PCs, for exactly this reason. I've posted two to this list (Marco the Faction-Imp and Rahul the Lustie from the frat house tether) who were recurring opponents for my PCs. Alarming NPCs, but, yeah, they can be difficult to role-play in a fun manner. And Neal added: >What makes Impudites fun is that they are Instant Love Machines -- >they can treat all the people around them in the most appalling fashion >imaginable and everyone will still love them. Think of the Sex Pistols >systematically wrecking every hotel they stayed in. Think of the prima >donna who refused to perform because her dressing room was painted >forest green when she asked for teal. Well, they *can* do this. They just need to be dealing with humans that they've repeatedly charmed before. The IPG lets you gradually, with repeated uses of resonance, turn a human into your love-toy. But, once again, this is better for NPCs, as role-playing it with PCs can be a bit tedious. >A Will 12 Impudite should be able to pick up a cute chick with a sock >puppet and a smirk. Well, if he could manage to touch her, he'd have about a 75% chance of doing just that. But yeah, point taken. >If they can't do that, then what's the point? And in the end that's the important >thing. :) Heh. So, for PCs it's a so-so resonance. But it's possible to design some killer NPCs around it. Fair assessment?
