Re: IN> I'm bored... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 18:19:45 -0700 From: James Walker Subject: IN> Michael's Trials - Freedom (Part 1) Lilith flounced into the Church of the Sword. "Pax Dei, Sanctuary and all that - I have a challenge for Michael!" Laurence made a curt nod; Michael sat back and started wondering why Lilith was flouncing. She hadn't acted like this in centuries; very young, happy and bright - oh yes, Bright. Of course. He sent a swift mental message out to a subordinate before concentrating again on Lilith. Who was complimenting Laurence on his hair, armor, the inside if the Cathedral. Laurence grew stiffer and stiffer - surely she had detected his Need to Soul-kill her? What game was she playing? Finally he replied:" Yes, Novalis has said much the same. No doubt she will be pleased to know that you agree with her. Would you care to explain the Challenge?" 'Of course!' And then the bright cheery vacous expression drained from her face. The cool, calculating self-centred Princess turned her gaze to Michael. 'A test of leadership and of diplomacy. The current chaos in Indonesia has been entertaining me greatly. A number of the islands are being fought over by local groups. They are being assisted by mercenaries. Victory goes to whoever can gain control of these five islands." A map appeared before her: five islands south-east of Borneo glowed lightly. Laurence spoke. "The moment this occurs the Indonesian military will intervene and crush these...locals." Lilith smiled, an unpleasant smile. 'You found it difficult to think of a name other than bandits, didn't you. But yes, the winning side will be destroyed. Did you really think I would set up a new government?" Michael answered her: "But you are, aren't you? The entire object of this exercise is to force the Indonesians to move troops out of Papua to deal with this chaos." Lilith shrugged. "And Heaven objects to this?" "I object to you slaughtering innocents to play your foolish game" snapped Laurence. " This will not 'free' Papua; that will be achieved by diplomacy not anarchy!" Lilith gazed at him coolly. "You forget yourself, Angel. I do not seek to replace one ruler with another, or to fool people into believing that they are not slaves just because their owner was born on the same landmass as themselves. Independence activists are useful tools, but they are still the slaves of their nations. I seek freedom from all powers, not just foreign ones." Her gaze returned to Michael. "Do you accept my challenge?" Michael smiled. "If I do not, you've wasted your time here." "You might be surprised." "I doubt it. When you arrived I sent out a message concerning Laurence's 'date', pointing out that asking you for advice would be dishonorable and would disqualify the asker. No Geases from your Bright daughters this time." Lilith's eyes flashed angrily. "Do you accept my challenge!". Michael considered. He wanted to. But could he afford to? If Lilith had detected a Need to accept the challenge... "I am offering a boon to anyone who can defeat me. What do you offer in return?" "I will create a Bright Lilim; who she serves, if anyone, will be her choice; however if you provide the Forces then she will have an affinity for your Word.." Michael closed his eyes. "I accept your challenge." ************************************************ I'll send part II within a couple of days. I stared into the Abyss, and the Abyss blinked first......... Let me put it this way -- I want to discourage postings to the list which will degenerate into off-topic rants and ramblings and flames. The thing most likely to that is cheap-shot "X is a demon!" post-and- runs. If someone has to _work_ to do up the "X is a demon!" character sheet, in a format that is not second nature to them (well, unless they're IN authors), it's one more hurdle to jump, which will, hopefully, cause the resulting post to be well-thought-out -- as well as making people have to go away and research the codes (which are at the SJGames writer's guidelines site, BTW). And after that, only the most hardcore, best ideas are going to be on the list. Which might produce something with nice, satirical commentary, which would be _good_ on the list. (Why would anyone be upset about that? Unless they _want_ to post political flamebait? ) I hardly said anything _else_ had to be a Perfect Posting, now did I? - --Beth, who went and voted already, and did not vote for the lesser of of two weevils. No more support of environmental causes. Nosireebob, this is a changed Archangel. He's even getting into all sorts of technological stuff now, especially biotech and genetech big guns. He's even cheerful, which is scaring the living life out of just about everybody else. What, you think that he's gonna try to set up a superplague and wipe out all of humanity? Please. He's an Archangel. No flouting of God's plan for this dude. Humanity's doing it for him. Jordi's seen a really secret corporeal report, and it's wonderful news. At present trends, humanity will be wiped out in thirty years. That's not a long time, really. It's just enough time to get gene samples for all the wildlife still out there, just in case his cleanup crews don't have much to work with. It's perfect: humanity kills itself off, Jordi puts the biosphere back together, the Fallen have an excuse to repent without losing too much face... and I suppose that we can reintroduce _some_ humans, after it's all over. Maybe twenty thousand or so. In the meantime, why be rude? The other AA's will all be admitting their mistake soon enough. No need to be petty. Let them have some meaningless concessions. And, meanwhile, there's a Balseraph of Dark Humor out there, idly wondering exactly what kind of Word to ask for as a reward for Pranking a Archangel.
