Okay, Moe, I'll answer that challenge, with this... (Anyone who thinks there's a hint of canon sniffing around here needs to have their eyes checked. Special Rite: Fire's "Kill a demon with fire." * Needless to say, these aren't standard skills, even for Lightning. Okay, so it's a little odd to have one of Janus' merry hooligans working for Mr. Orderly himself, and attuned to one of his Servitors, and sporting his Cherub attunement. But to all other appearances, Sippai is a perfectly normal Cherub, in a perfectly normal job. So why are no less than five Cherubim of Judgment attuned to her as a subject of investigation? Why has Vapula put out word that bringing him Sippai and her attuned (an Elohite, as it happens) will get Distinctions and project funding? Why does the mere mention of her name make Jean reach for ibuprofen, Janus giggle with a faint hysterical edge, and Gabriel spout off prophecies in languages that sound suspiciously like English and Japanese conflated? Well, part of the reason might be that there are two of them. Sippai, that is. And another part might be that one's a Malakite. Of Fire. And the kicker is that the second one, the Cherub, arrived unexpectedly at the top of a Jeanite Tether when she hadn't entered from the bottom. One of those little things. Makes folk twitchy. You know how it is. You'd think that you could ask Sippai herself (the Cherub one, not the Malakite) where she came from, except that she doesn't remember. Well, not exactly. According to her, her first memories start when she woke up in Hell, in some restraints that didn't fit very well, and a couple of demons were walking out of the room. One of them was saying, "She's no longer dangerous," and the other commented, "We must inform the Prince." Mind, even without her memories, Sippai didn't think that this was a place she wanted to hang around. You don't need _memories_ to know that Hell is bad, when you're an angel. Besides, that comment that she was no longer dangerous rankled. So she wriggled out of the restraints (which, really, weren't meant to hold a ferret-Cherub), helped herself to a number of the relics which were lying around the place, and scrammed. After fleeing through various techno-looking corridors, she came to the celestial locus of a Tether, and headed up. Except instead of winding up on Earth, as expected, she wound up in Heaven. Maybe the demons shooting at her with weird guns had something to do with it -- the Tether's end-point was certainly sparking and crackling like crazy as she went through, and the ride up it wasn't anything _like_ pleasant. Of course, that's not all -- that's just the stuff that you can get access to if you can demonstrate a need to know, or get Cherub-Sippai slightly tipsy. The stuff that you only hear about if your _Archangel_ thinks you need to know is that some of those relics register as being crafted by Lightning himself, only Jean doesn't remember making them. And they're too high-tech anyway, to have been given corporeal manifestations. And he'd really like to know _why_ he'd have password-protected a bunch of Memory Pearls, and how they got so baroque-looking, and what the heck the password _is_, and if finding out is important enough to the Symphony for him to spend a few years cracking the password. He'd also like to know why Cherub-Sippai was wearing a locket that happened to be a celestial relic showing (in corporeal form) the corporeal vessel of one of his younger Servitors, and (in celestial form), that Elohite's _celestial_ appearance. Since it was Sippai's artifact, the Cherub decided to attune to the angel in question when they first met by happenstance. Well, mostly happenstance. Sippai was being debriefed at the top of the Tether by Jean when the young Servitor came up it to report that a rather large (and somewhat smoking) Impudite in a lab coat, with several strange relics on him, had just _descended_ the Tether, taken corporeal form, and used a Song of Motion to vanish. While it reported, Sippai looked in her locket, looked at the Elohite, and snuck over to attune herself. And then there's the Fire connection. Now, Sippai-Cherub is definitely a Windy -- she _acts_ like one, and she's got the Swipe and Passage attunements. On the other hand, she has the _Malakite_ Choir Attunement (for explosives) and not the Cherub one. She didn't have a Heart, either, when she arrived. (Unfortunately, no one thought to expose her to the Malakite Sippai's Heart before Janus made the Cherub a new one; neither Jean nor Janus were aware that there was someone else with essentially the same true name...) She's got Gabriel's "Kill a demon with fire" Rite, but no other attunements from Fire. As it happens, Sippai the Malakite doesn't _like_ her "alter-ego." It would take an Elohite to explain why -- Malakite-Sippai certainly doesn't bother to do so -- but it's essentially because the general consensus (among those who know) is that Cherub-Sippai is from the future. This implies two things to Malakite-Sippai. First, that the future-her left her beloved Mistress' service (something unthinkable to most Gabrielites), and second, that the future-her somehow _failed_ and was _captured by demons._ And then turned into a Cherub, a creature capable of _Falling_, which unspeakably unthinkable, disgusting, and horrifying. No one's sure how Vapula got wind of this -- some loose-tongued Servitor of Revelation, maybe, or a demon of Secrets who smelled profit. From his reactions, and questioning one would-be kidnapper, it would _seem_ that he's as baffled as Jean. (Unless that's just what he _wants_ everyone to think -- Vapula's a mad scientist, not a stupid one.) Which leaves everyone in a quandary about how all this happened, with those password-protected Memory Pearls the only useful clue. Well, that Impudite might be a clue as well, if he turns up again. He might. Judgment's been investigating some rumors of a neurosciences research lab that's been sheltering Outcasts. Unfortunately, the triad they sent there has vanished without a trace, their Hearts cracked... - --Beth, typing w/a uncoopertive baby (iolanthe) causing typos. I *know* what you've just done to the servitors of Fate (and Technology, and Dark Humor...). It's almost as bad as Oops.... [snip] for Kyriotates, i use 'it' or 'they', depending on whether the Kyriotate in question is in one host or several. for superiors, no one gets a capital pronoun, not even Lucifer (though i enjoy the way Piers Anthony capitalizes "My" and "Mine" in reference to the devil when he's speaking of himself and his things--it gives a sense of his pride). -=|horsefly|=- "It was a different time: a time of blood and guns and killings.... You get three guesses to determine if that's his True reason, and the first two don't count. Every so often, Baal likes to sponsor a demon for a SPECIAL Word. He's always supported in this by Saminga, Belial (and lately, Nybbas and Furfur), for reasons that will shortly become obvious. The demon's never from the same Band twice, and has never been more than 12 Forces. Other than that, they've run the gamut in skills, Songs, Attunements: the oddest types, really. The new Word-Bound is feted, made much of by the Media and the War, and is generally treated quite well... just before they get assigned to Corporeal Duty. That's when the problems start. The Word, you see, is Invulnerability. There isn't a self-respecting Servitor of the War Faction, or _any_ Malakite, that can resist taking a crack at this one. As many cracks as it takes. The careers of every Demon of Invulnerability have been very dramatic, very bloody... and very, very short. Needless to say, the cameras are taking it all in: it's amazing what a motivated demon will do to stay alive, and often their tricks will get posthumously enshrined in the Book. It's also primo entertainment (Nybbas doesn't even have to worry about royalties!). No demon has lasted more than three months, but their collective sacrifices for Hell has paid great dividends. Heaven enjoys the experience too, actually: Mike and Larry get to periodically try out wacky new strategies, and the lessons they learn end up in _their_ Book. Plus, it's yet another way to handle various angelic pecking orders: some groups don't consider you seriously badass until you've taken down a demon of Invulnerability. Really, everybody's happy, except for the Word-bound, of course... and any poor schmucks caught up for the ride (Baal will _not_ look benignly on anyone caught refusing his test subject aid. A Word-bound is a Word-bound. Just because _he_ gets to screw someone over doesn't mean that anyone else can, too). Gee, I really hope that doesn't happen to anyone you know... ;) Moe ===== In Nomine stuff: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Everything else (not that there is, right now): http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/main.html Last updated 9/5/00 (this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
