Why is that last any different from the normal case? (For a normal resonance roll, the Lilim's CD = level-of-Geas = , in the regular Lilim mechanics. So the level of Geas is normally a Will-roll penalty. The only difference is that no resonance roll is needed to find the Geas. Or did you intend to penalize the subject *more* than usual? If so, I'd suggest a bonus of the Lilim's Corporeal Forces (mostly because that's the usual Lilim's weak suit, but one can tack on some doubletalk justification related to this being Corporeal-related due to the corporeal speech being the link). - ---Walter ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 23:46:53 -0500 From: Walter Milliken Subject: Re: IN> Impudites of Lust At 16:50 -0800 11/22/00, Kish wrote: >The corebook states that Impudites of Lust add their Corporeal Forces >to any attempt to use their resonance on someone they've had sex with. > >The Infernal Player's Guide, on page 121, states that Impudites of >Lust add their Corporeal Forces to any attempt to use their resonance >on someone they touch. > >Neither book's errata clarifies this, so I wondered, which is >intended? I designed Sorantine so that even before the Fall she didn't spend a lot of time around Heaven proper, and once she fell in love with Calis, her attention span was nil. That's why the Fall caught her by surprise and even now, 22,000 years later and in the Upper Heavens, she still has no clear idea of just who's who and what's what. I was trying to show that even now Sorantine still believes that Andrealphus and Kobal and all the others are still around as they were. She's not sure *what* happened during the Fall really, and she only dimly understands that Lucifer had some role to play in it all, though what that role was she doesn't know. Yes, you've seen these before. I'm posting them for the benefit of the newbies who haven't seen them yet and/or know nothing about the Minor Choir/Band contest. Shinanim "The Sparks" Senator Reyes looked tired. Not the tiredness of someone who is exhausted from honest work; this was the worn-out look of a man who is tired of fighting the good fight. The limp grasp in which he held his notes was symbolic of his weakening hold on his faith. "Almost ready, sir?" I said as I walked over to him. "As ready as I'll ever be," he answered. "I don't know why I bother, Melinda. This bill is a political hot potato. The liberals don't support it, the conservatives don't want to pay for it. If it lasts long enough to be killed in committee, I'll be surprised." "Don't give up yet, sir," I said as I laid a hand on his arm and called upon my Resonance, "This bill will do a lot of good for a lot of people. I believe in it -- and I know that you still do, despite what you say." My effort was immediately rewarded as a light that was too long absent returned to Reyes' eyes. He straightened up and began to exude the charisma that had gotten him elected. "You're right, Melinda," he said, "I do believe in this. But it's nice to hear it from you, too." He squeezed my shoulder and turned to go. "Every politician should have a press secretary like you." I let Senator Reyes walk out to the podium - where I knew that he would give a brilliant speech -- before I whispered my answer. "I wish they did, sir. There just aren't enough of us." Shinanim are living embodiments of the spark of divine inspiration. While most of Gabriel's angels are assigned to punish the cruel, Shinanim have the task of motivating the faithful. The gentler aspects of Fire - warmth as opposed to heat - come to life in the form of Shinanim. Other Servitors of Fire smolder with the flames of vengeance, but Shinanim burn with the fires of love. They wear their love of God and Humanity on their celestial sleeves and make no secret of their passionate devotion to the Archangel of Fire. Shinanim are often loaned to other Archangels (Blandine, Khalid and Litheroy find them especially useful), but none would even dream of permanently leaving Gabriel's service. The Sparks are potent tools for helping humanity. Unfortunately, their numbers are dwindling. As Gabriel has descended into her madness, she has neglected to make more Shinanim to replace those who Fall or are lost to soul-death. Every Shin'an fears that she will someday be the last one in Heaven. Resonance The Sparks resonate to inspiration. If the spark of the divine exists within any being, a Shin'an can fan it to a roaring flame. The cliché of a light bulb appearing over the head of someone who's just had an idea appeals to Shinanim - for they are the light bulb. The Sparks delight in renewing faith, passion and dedication in the hearts of those who need it. A Shin'an can intensify the divine spark in anyone they touch by making a Resonance roll. The subject is filled with renewed passion for a cause, a creed, an idea, a relationship, etc. This state lasts for a number of hours equal to the angel's Celestial Forces times the Check Digit. What the subject of the Shin'an Resonance does with the inspiration is entirely up to him or her. When used on demons, the Shin'an Resonance only effects those who have at least three notes of Dissonance. Even then, it can only inspire repentance in those who are already inclined to Redeem. Dissonance Shinanim are made up of the light of inspiration and the warmth of affection and encouragement. It is Dissonant for them to shoot down any idea or - through malice or carelessness - dampen another being's spirits. A Shin'an may offer constructive criticism if it's carefully worded, but cannot insult anyone... including a demon. Manner and Appearance Shinanim wear Vessels that radiate health and the energy of youth. They tend to prefer female Vessels and are more likely to appear as children than any other Choir. Their style of dress is both uninhibited and innocent. The most striking feature of a Shin'an is her eyes; the angel's gaze looks as if she has seen the deepest mysteries of the Symphony and laughed at all of God's jokes. In celestial form, a Shin'an appears as a globe of pure golden light. It should come as no surprise that a Choir devoted solely to the service of Gabriel identifies themselves musically as trumpets. Choir Attunement Gabriel grants her Shinanim the ability to see the divine spark when it shines with particular brightness in a mortal. The mortal in question may have the potential for extra Forces, possess the "Blessed" Advantage, be a prophet, have an especially powerful Destiny, etc. The Shin'an never knows why such people are special, only that they are. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "Laugh and the world laughs with you. By now you may be forming the opinion that I've been rather busy lately. This is the last one this week, I promise -- but I make no guarantees for next week. Irin ("The Lawgivers") The three of us approached the lecture hall -- myself, my Soldier Brom and the Irin called Vigilance. Senator Reyes' speech didn't require our presence, but I had gotten a call from his angelic press secretary Mirabile. She had spotted a demon in the audience and called for backup. We were here to stop an assassination. Brom and I readied our gear as we neared the door. Before I could open it, Vigilance whispered, "Watch it. There are guards." I flashed a hand signal to Brom and charged through the door. As I was picking myself up, a gaggle of teenagers dressed as congressional pages leapt at me from out of the shadows. Brom arrived next to me before they did and went to work with his machete. Before I could jump in and help Brom, my head rang with Mirabile's projected voice. "There's a man with a gun! Hurry!" I kicked in my Ofanite Resonance and headed for the stage. I reached the podium and knocked Reyes to the floor a fraction of a second before the gun went off. An hour later, I was backstage with Mirabile and Vigilance. Brom was being taken to jail and charged with murder. I'd have to fix that later, but right now I needed to know who had done this. I turned to Mirabile. "See any more demons?" I whispered. "No," she replied, "Only the one in the balcony. But I didn't get a chance to check the man with the gun." "Probably Hellsworn like the others," I said as that very gun passed by us in the arms of a police officer. Vigilance stared hard at the weapon, then suddenly gasped. "What?" I said. The Irin's eyes, so recently wide with shock, narrowed in anger as she turned to me. "That rifle," she said, "Was fired by an angel." Judgement's primary duty is to monitor the integrity of the Heavenly Host, but Dominic also hates earthly crime. The Irin are Dominic's foremost detectives in the Corporeal realm. Lawgivers are charged with solving unsolved crimes and seeing that justice is done. They rarely serve as judge or jury and almost never as executioner -- Irin prefer to uncover evidence that allows mortal authorities to administer justice. There aren't many Lawgivers for the simple reason that few are needed. Dominic's other angels are more than adequate for most jobs. It's only when the evidence of a crime has been covered up by supernatural interference or by very clever Humans that an Irin is sent in. Dominic has a complete monopoly on Irin. This isn't because he forbids them to leave his service; it's just that, in all the millenia of their existence, no Lawgiver has ever wanted to leave. The Irin mindset meshes so well with the Word of Judgement that none of these angels can imagine ever wanting to serve another Archangel. Resonance While Seraphim resonate with truth, Irin resonate with facts. They can focus on an object or an area and gather evidence about a specific occurrence. The player must specify what event the angel is examining before making the Resonance roll. The largest area that an Irin can Resonate has a radius in feet equal to the angel's total Forces. Irin Check Digit Results (each result includes the information from lesser results) 1: You instantly perceive all evidence that could be found in more time by mundane methods but cannot find anything that has been deliberately hidden. 2: You perceive evidence that has been hidden by mundane means. 3: You see a replay of the event from the viewpoint of an invisible observer but cannot see through or detect supernatural interference. 4: You know if the evidence has been supernaturally tampered with. 5: You can see through supernatural tampering. 6: You know what sort of being tampered with the evidence (angel, demon, spirit, Soldier, Sorcerer, Undead or Crossbreed) and have a general idea of how the tampering was done (Song, Attunement, Resonance or Sorcery). More Sophisticated Uses of Resonance An Irin normally has to handle an object or be standing in an area in order to use her Resonance. If she takes a -2 penalty to the TN, she may Resonate any object or area that she can see with her unaided eyes (the Songs of Sight count as unaided for this purpose). This penalty is cumulative with the penalty for Resonating a photograph. She may also Resonate on something that she perceives with only her sense of hearing or smell at a -4 penalty. Dissonance Irin are investigators rather than enforcers. Their function is to find infractions and report them; others must punish. A Lawgiver accrues a note of Dissonance for offering any correction that she has not been specifically authorized to administer (scolding other people's children, vigilantism, admonishing another angel's Servitors, etc.). This restriction doesn't apply to demons who are caught in the act of abusing mortals. Irin also get Dissonance for destroying, altering or covering up evidence -- they rely on others for that. Lawgivers who make a habit of taking the law into their own hands or manipulating the appearance of guilt or innocence quickly find themselves turned into Mastinim. Manner and Appearance Irin always wear lean Vessels with long-fingered hands and high, domed foreheads. Their eyes, ears and noses are unusually large, but not unattractively so. They always wear their hair short - many of those who use male Vessels are bald - and keep their Vessels well groomed and their clothes meticulously cleaned and pressed. Lawgivers have a detached intellectual manner that many Humans find off-putting. Needless to say, they get along quite well with Elohim. Irin have no gender preference for their Vessels. What they do have is low tolerance for surprises and a profound distaste for fiction. In celestial form, an Irin looks like a winged crystal sphere with a transparent image of the angel's corporeal face inside. Those with multiple Vessels will display an equal number of faces. Their musical affinity is the most static of any in Heaven - they see themselves as the sheet music by which other musicians know that they're playing correctly. Choir Attunement (Restricted) When using her Resonance, an Irin may add a bonus to the TN if she has a skill that is appropriate to the situation. Examining a body to determine the cause of death allows the angel to add her Medicine skill, analyzing a footprint allows her to add Tracking, determining whether or not a fire was arson would allow the use of Chemistry, etc. The bonus is equal to the angel's skill level divided by two (round down). ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "Laugh and the world laughs with you. First, the person's reflection disappears, replaced with Mary's face, hideous and terrible, then, the mirror explodes in a spray of glass, doing d6-1 damage, and then Mary is there. Special Rites: Kill a child in a terrible manner (1 essence) She was an angel, to begin with. Once, she was beloved by all for her playful parlor tricks and little illusions with mirrors. However, she had a deep longing, she needed something else. She just didn't know what. And then, Lucifer came along. As soon as she knew of his cause, she knew it was what she was looking for. She joined him without having to be convinced by him at all. She willingly sold her soul. The Fall happened, and she was kicked out of Heaven, like the rest. At first, she was a relatively sane demon, for a servant of Fear. When humanity looked in the mirror, late at night, she was on the other side, showing them what they didn't want to see, showing them how others saw them. Relatively weak, she was none-the-less a favored servant of Beleth. She fell in love with a demon of the Game, and they petitioned to their superiors to create a child. They did so. Why she did what she did, well, is anyone's guess. She became queen of England. In spirit, anyway. She used the Song of Possession to occasionally take over Mary the First's body in the time when she was a queen. She began raking up discord left and right, as a result, because of Beleth's policy. Beleth talked to her, told her that she was not to possess Queen Mary anymore. The demon Mary agreed, but then went out and possessed her again. So, an angry Beleth locked her in a terrible nightmare, a nightmare in which Mary's own child attacked her, tore her apart, nearly soul-killed her. She escaped the nightmare and returned to Hell, where she slew her lover and her child, driven by an insane hatred. After that, she possessed Mary once more, only to find the queen sick and dying. It was quite unfortunate, really, that the queen herself was, though bitter, a fairly nice woman. However, she would later be seen as a nearly evil woman, simply because of routine possessions. The now-insane demon took over Mary's body in its death-throws and stumbled down to the dungeons beneath the castle, something many historians do not know, or do not talk about. There, she began by slaying the guard, and then killed every single prisoner in the dungeons. She then retreated once more to her tower and asked another guard to call ten of the city's children to the tower with her. They dragged ten children from their homes and brought her to her palace. What she did exactly to them, is unknown, but she threw herself from the highest point on the tower. When they managed to get the door open, all the mirrors in the room had been smashed, and all then children had had their faces torn off and their spines broken. Mary the First was no more. The demon Mary was pulled back to Hell, and torn with dissonance, driven completely mad. Beleth hid the incident from the general public and trapped Mary in Hell, giving a servant the responsibility of torturing her until the end of days. However, recently, the servant went Renegade and Mary escaped. At first, she was going to go Renegade herself, too insane to realize she would be killed quickly. Then she felt a strange pull. Following it, she learned of a new myth-that of Bloody Mary. Oddly, children had started to believe that calling her name ten times in a mirror in a darkened room would summon her. Well, she wasn't going to tell them otherwise. She let it work. However, when she appeared, she killed the child. As the myth began to spread, death didn't seem to worry children. They didn't believe it would actually happen. They just did it to test their own courage. Beleth was still terribly upset with her, and spoke with her. Mary, however, proved how much fear her legend caused in children, and she promised that she would travel from town to town, randomly, and only appear to children there. Everywhere else, her calls would go unanswered. So Beleth allowed this, and, as in Hell, rumors spread like wildfire, rumor has it that the real reason is because Beleth was too afraid to try and destroy her, because she is too powerful. This is, of course just a rumor, and she does her job regardless of this. She shows no mercy, no prejudice. Call her, and she will kill you. Painfully. If she's in your city, that is. And if she's not, well, sometimes she cheats. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 17:16:00 -0500 From: damienw@juno.com Subject: Re: IN> Magic On Thu, 23 Nov 2000 07:46:37 -0600 "Cthulhu" writes: > >> > >> Bah. Actually, given that Superiors are supposed to have a Kyroiate-like ability to multitask, you could see a couple of Superiors (or at least, regular Word-bound who you're directly reporting to) maybe doing it. For some reason, I could see Dominic doing it every once in a great while as a prevention measure. - --- damienw[et]juno.com "SOY! Soy makes you strong! Strength crushes enemies! In the crossover rules that I toy with every so often (long way from completion, but that's what tinker rules are for, right?), mages have a connection to the Symphony similar, but not identical to, that of the celestials. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 12:32:19 +1300 From: "Alex Liddell" Subject: Re: IN> Magic > > The main problem I see is in IN, the angels claim to know how things > > REALLY work. I think that you could have a great deal of fun as an Elohite in that sort of crossover. The main problem I have, is that the angels take a very grim view of people who mess with things that shouldn't be messed with. Like Sorcerors. Then the Angels go and kill whoever is involved, or at least make it really hard for them to proceed. When I thought about the whole WOD/IN cross, I couldn't get past the fact that Angels and Demons are so powerful compared to Vampires and the like. Dominate? Nice, but here are my Ethereal Shields, or my monster Will. Majesty? Again nice try. Eat my amazing True Faith, which as an Angel I have by default.... perhaps. That is the way I saw it anyway. When I think about human/vampire/changeling society and Demons in the same light. I can see the Demons getting really annoyed at the arrogance of these creatures. Demon Princes, can probably see the worth of these individual clans and so on, but again, in a crossover situation combat is probably going to break the whole thing. The Demon walks in with his NumCorp Claws or the Malakite of Gabriel decides to mix it up. Then there is the vessel thing. When an Angel or Demon dies it can come back and finish what it started..... a WOD character doesn't quite have that luxury. Any thoughts here? _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. My first thoughts upon an IN/WOD crossover were "Malakite with flaming sword! VAMPIRE ROAST! WOOOOO-HOO!" Of course, upon thinking about it a second time, I realized my error. Now it's "Ofanite of Fire -- with *napalm*! VAMPIRE ROAST! WOOOOO-HOOOO!" [1] (You're immortal agents of the Lord, living weapons (well, at least the War faction types are) for God. You're *supposed* to be going through the corrupt degenerate bloodsucking spawn of a cursed human like a bulldozer through cobwebs. IMO.) And I tell you -- if by some weird cosmic shift I ever end up DM'ing a Vampire campaign, I *will* send in the Malakim if it starts getting out of hand... - -- Chuckg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 18:38:54 -0800 From: "Kish" Subject: Re: IN> Magic From: Alex Liddell <> Whyso? I mean, obviously angels and demons are very powerful compared to IN vampires and sorcerers--but that doesn't matter in a crossover. Or do you mean that, conceptually, angels and demons should be far more powerful than mages and vampires? <> Why a monster Will? And how many celestials can afford to use a Song, and spend Essence, anywhere near as many times as a vampire can use Dominate?
