You know: the one with the Scott Joplin music? :) Moe Once upon a time, there were a bunch of PCs. They were either very nice people, or very, very bad people, but their morals aren't important right now. What is important is that they got their hands on a standard MacGuffin: the usual choice is an old book or map, but really it could be anything. A mosaic would be nice, but then the PCs would have to be in Europe. Well, they'll be going there, anyway, so let's call it a mosaic. Said mosaic was just uncovered in ... well, Pompeii is mysterious enough, and your players will know enough about it to nod their heads wisely, at least. This mosaic shows a Roman holiday scene, complete with a priest and a ram, apparently sacrificing to the Roman god Janus (oh, no, not _that_ base canard again)... and what very much looks like writing in Angelic, worked into the background. How odd. Now, it's best if the writing isn't part of the news story, so have a Soldier of (insert friendly Superior Word here) on the case: he can't actually read Angelic, but he can recognize it. Of course, he makes darn sure that the photos of the background don't become part of the official record. Using Standard Stock Method for Getting to the Point #5, the photos end up in the PC's possession, and the Soldier is _nowhere_ in sight. Suspiciously nowhere. Assuming that even demons can read Angelic (and why not?), the PCs have got an eyeful. It would seem that Janus was a bad boy after all before the Purity Crusade: why, he _was_ siphoning off the Essence, according to the inscriptions, which seem to detail a series of prayers apparently used to summon him. Well, it's all very coy, talking about "sweet Wind of Change basking in our love" and so forth, but we know what's _really_ going on, right? There's also a bit of Latin graffiti included in the photos: apparently, the local services seemed to take place in a cavern not yet dug out by the archeologists. The words "gold", "silver" and "god-weapons" are prominent. Now, any smart angel would take all of this to the nearest Tether and send it up to the Inquisition, _not_ grab some shovels and go look for old artifacts (and other useful blackmail material). Perceptive angels would stop and wonder why anyone could write this down in Angelic if they couldn't read it, or why the Soldier disappeared. Experienced angels would realize that the digs at Pompeii were finished quite a while back. Still, when the PCs get to the cave, you should at least give them the chance to try to explain why they haven't _really_ failed the test of subordination so carefully set up and administered to them by the Inquisition. Having Dominic himself there looking annoyed is cruel, but understandable. And, oh, yes, Asmodeus knows about this little trick, too. He just doesn't care: any demons this impetuous _deserve_ to be shown the error of their ways by the Host... ===== In Nomine stuff: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 11/25/00 (this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Saminga was long enamoured of the power of Death. He had witnessed the destruction of the Dinosaurs and realized at that momment what sort of power must have emerged from suddenly billions of beings dying out with all their essence having to "somewhere". Unfortunately ambition to control and grow in power was an inherently selfish aim and he knew as long as he harbored it he would never have the purity that he needed to recieve a word from the Metatron that would allow him to be the Archangel of Death. As a relatively weak Kyriorite he knew that also he did not have enough power to seize such a mantle forcibly so he decided to bide him time and see what emerged... Lucifer did. Saminga knew from the momment the battle begun that they were doomed, one did not study death for sixty five odd million years and not develop a understanding of the concept of numerical superiority and that the Archangel of Valor was a poor substitute for the Archangels of War, Purity, Fire, Stone, Oceans, and Wind. The majority of Heaven's rebels were lazy good for nothings who were either disenchanted with their Superiors and lured by the promise of greater power or holders of contempteously estoreic and less than primal words words like Love, Fear (which was rather useless in Heaven), and Humor. However Saminga joined in because he knew that with such concentrated power Lucifer would discover a way to bestow what he wanted. and he did. Sorcery interested Saminga a great deal from the earliest time that it had emerged and with the combined knowledge of the then great (and almost Archangelic) Egyptian Pantheon Saminga advanced his knowledge about Death and how to control it by leaps and bounds. With the word of death every being which perished violently or went to Hell gave tithe to him of their essence and he had the knowledge about how to put such power to great use. Unfortunately Lucifer knew about his power though he did not understand it and Saminga had made no friends who could stand against the combined might of Hell so he performed a risky plan. He played it stupid. Walking up to Lucifer and pretending to be a mad ranting evil who openly acknowledged his superiority to all living beings and that Death was the ultimate evil and had no need for other beings in the cosmos his every other sentence was laden with bizzarity that he had learned from Kobal. Lucifer quickly divorced any ideas of eliminating this amusing fool and was pleased to discover him pathetically easy to manipulate. What no one seemed to understand was that no angel could exist as many millions of years as Saminga and not be a genius, let alone master the arts of the occult with precision that no other Prince could hope to imagine. For a few thousand years which were only a drop in the hat of his millions of lonely years of life Saminga acted like a complete Buffoon as he slowly made preparations.... Stripping the forces of all of his souls so they only had enough to produce the daily requirement of essence Saminga needed, his made him more powerful than any other prince quickly and with no cost yet seemed to be titanic waste. Making a quiet alliance with Kobal and Haagenti as he made note of Kobal's dissastifaction and that Haagenti had slain two princes....yet was still fumming from being looked down upon...much like they thought Saminga was. It also gaurenteed Kobal's sense of humor wouldn't pick up the innate ridiculousness of Saminga's story. He made an alliance with Baal who as the Lord of the War was a powerful ally and could easily throw suspicion off Saminga if he believed he was manipulating "The Poor Mad Prince of Death" into serving his more powerful (HA!) and honorable word. Finally he openly revealed and ranted about his plan to turn the world into a world of the dead where only the dead would reign. IT DIDN'T OCCUR TO ANYONE that a world of the Dead would still have access to essence that they so required and that demons could still create new beings at a whim (should they need to) while depriving Heaven entirely of it's own resources. The plan worked so well no one really (even his servitors and allies) understood what the Hell happened when Saminga walked up to the Prince of Hell and killed him. *** Hell has become a warzone and a graveyard...quite literally. Saminga upon killing Lucifer declared himself the new ruler of Hell and invited his fellow Demon princes to bow down and pay homage to him as he shed any pretext of insanity. Saminga predicted that demons being a rather selfish lot that he would not have the support of a number of them and he was right about it indeed. His former ally Baal upon realizing how thoughly he had been manipulated became the vangaurd for challenging Saminga and attempted to destroy him upon the spot where he stood....and was defeated despite Saminga being weakened from his "battle" with Lucifer. Baal managed to survive however and with his group's confidence shaken has retreated to the realms of his allies in an attempt to regain command the Hosts of Hell but already his defeat has lost him the confidence of those Princes who might normally have trusted him to be a worthy sucessor to Lucifer. Saminga has since allied with those Princes who did support him for his rulership of Hell and destroyed those Princes who who remained "on the Fence" as an act of recourse. Strip mining them of their power as he had done so with so many times he has managed to make a speedy recovery from his great expenditure of power that he had spent fighting Lucifer and Baal. Apparently now possessing the same power as Lucifer to grant words, or he always had, Saminga has also appointed new Princes from his servitors and those who remained with him to fill the gapeing hole in the Hellish heirachy as he wages his slow and inevitable conquest of Hell and hopefully soon...the World. Abadon has become the most complex and beutiful of Principalities with an endless graveyard of slain demons, angels, and souls filling the endless wastes along with palaces of bone, blood, and skulls. The other principalities under Saminga's dominion are following suit slowly as the renegade princes's fight to keep their lands from falling to destruction. Heaven remains completely taken aback by this turn of events in Hell as they too believed the stories that Saminga was nothing more than a buffoon living at the sufferance of Lucifer and have taken serious hits as Saminga's soldiers begin to flood the Earth with occult secrets, undead, and a concentrated assault of Ethereal darkness. Laurence personally advocates destroying Saminga now but Michael restrains the commander of the Host as the Archangel of War's own confidence has been severely shaken by the destruction of the man he had only defeated. The Ethereal Marches have of course fallen as Saminga knew from day one that Blandine and Beleth's battle was the key to winning humanity over to the cold embrace of death. Arming her with an army of undead, nightmarish creatures, and Set's new status as a Prince Saminga was able to aid Beleth in destroying Blandine's tower and driving her servitors from the Marches which now remain solely the province of Beleth and the Warbringer Set. Earth has only begun to feel the effects of Saminga's rise to power as everyone fails to sleep right. Good dreams are still possible but they are always darker than one normally should have as dreams of love, promotion, and glory are tainted with the message of Beleth, Set, and Saminga and the undead have become almost completely commonplace in dreams that television is becomming a swift reflection of horror. Missing person's cases are of course much much higher and there has been a revival of the occult in today's world with a reflection on more lovecraftian and satanic themes than the uplifting message of Wicca and other New age revivals. - -Charlemagne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 22:12:01 -0800 From: "Amanda Bowyer" Subject: Re: IN> New In Nomine PBEM - -- On Tue, 09 Jan 2001 22:07:49 Tyto Alba wrote: >Greetings. > >I am looking for players for my new In Nomine >PBEM. Saminga has made himself a great deal of Princes in a very short period of time as well to replace the ones that Baal's faction has managed to win over from actively serving his cause which keeps the Prince of Hell as weak as he was before he assumed the throne though one might argue that he wasn't nearly as weak as everyone gave him credit for... Saminga has proven himself a very good organizer nontheless and his choices have firm places in the new "Court of the Dead" which he has set up and he is organized well in keeping them close knit for his intended transformation of the Earth into a world of which he will have sole dominion over. Alaemon: The demon prince of secrets upon seeing Saminga manipulate his word so well to conquering Lucifer promptly swore his allegiance to his King and has since been entrusted by Saminga to help mortals along with Haphitas to spread the secrets of the dead while heightening paranoia. Alaemon does not mind this as the appeal of sorcery is that it is forbidden and that it's true damning nature and how BAD damnation is, is what he must hide. Thus his word grows more powerful with each secret he "shares". Alaemon: Saminga is the true leader of Hell and he is the night everlasting, all hail him and his occult mastery! Saminga: He must think I'm a fool to not see that he intends to do exactly what I've done under a veil of fanaticism before he replaces me. We will see about that. Beleth, Demon Princess of the Night Saminga upon helping Beleth drive Blandine out of the Marches has since made her his consort and as close to co-ruler of Hell as anyone is ever going to come to be in the infernal lands. He has also subtly altered her word so that she is no longer just the Demon princess of unpleasant dreams but also the Demon Princess of pleasant dreams of evil. Thus Beleth has taken over a large ammount of Nybbas's servitors and discovered new joy in inspiring mortals to great acts of depravity. Beleth on Saminga: "How I misjudged Saminga. The Demon Prince of Death I thought was letting mortals escape their pain by killing them but in truth they'res is just beggining as even the dead feel pain. Now that my jealous foolish lover has gone from this place I begin to see how much more enjoyable painful humans can make the world dark as well as be pained." Saminga on Beleth: "Long I watched her and my heart ached with lust to have her and her delicious darkness. Through her and Luthiene make the world embrace the desire to join my universe as undead....and I will then at last be all powerful. Until then I slake my passion for terror with her." Fufur, the Demon Prince of Destruction Fufur has shed his Rocker image since his "talk" with Saminga and now looks like a more traditional demon in that he is a bloated reptilian tailed engine of death that destroys everything in it's path. Fufur's servitors now armed with servants of Belial, Baal, and the very few remaining of Magog are cutting a bloody swath through the streets of the Earth, Heaven's forces, and Baal's forces. While nowhere near the tactician that Baal is, his servitors (including a treacherous Ophis) manage well enough and the General of Saminga's force's unpredictability has proven a powerful asset against Laurence and Michael both. Fufur on Saminga: GIVE ME MORE BODIES MASTER! GROWLLLLL! HISSS! Saminga on Fufur: There is far too much dead weight in the world and Baal was too slow..thus my solution. Haagenti, Demon Prince of Gluttony Haagenti hasn't changed much since Saminga came to power if only to grow more power obsessed, a little more "refined", and alittle more dangerous. Always believing Saminga was stronger than he let on Haagenti trusted Kobal when he said to kill Malphas and Haagenti did so, swallowing the Prince of Factions in two bites. Haagenti was also the man who brought Nybbas's wailing body before Saminga to be stripped force by force for the Prince's desires. Since then Haagenti has shown precacious little desire to kill further himself as he rules Shal-Mari in a bizzare manner with carnal appetites and power now as important to Haagenti as food. Haagenti has also gained and surounded himself a number of remarkably intelligent servitors who have made sure that since Lust and Power seeking are to be under Haagenti when Baal's faction are undone... Haagenti will be there to pick up the pieces. Haagenti on Saminga: Sex, Drugs, Money, Power, and of course Food have always been part of my word...I just never released it. While Sloth, Oblivion, and Factions were good meals I think I'll take a slower approach to killing Andrephalus and Mammon and yes Fleurity will eventually have to submit or die. My dear my nails look awful *CHOMP*. Ah yes what was I saying? Who knows in a few thousand years...maybe Gluttony will want to eat Death. Saminga on Haagenti: I should have had him eat Nybbas. Gluttony has a place in the new structure; Zombis eat the fallen, Vampires drink blood, Mummies seek power and wealth and sexuality as long as it is purely a erotic sport I have nothing against....however he better not get airs about himself. Hapithas, Demon Princess of the Occult When Saminga made the offer to the Demon of sorcery to make her a Demon Princess she did not hesitate longer than to look to her Prince to give an approving eyebrow and now she has found herself in a favored position as Saminga's right hand in spreading the powers of Necromancy (Songs of Death, Sorcery of course, and attunements of Saminga) she also serves as Saminga's occasional consort which has created a bit of a rivalry with Beleth. Her job along with Alaemon is replenishing Hell's servitors rapidly as the rites, attunements, and the like of Hell send many to Hell automatically...and since Saminga destroyed the Angels of Final Judgement, no one is able to make sure they do not burn with the rest. Hapithas on Saminga: Fate never changed but Death has proven it's superiority with the times and an entire world awaits my lore and loving touch. Saminga on Hapithas: If only I had a million more like her, this age would be great indeed. Kobal, Demon Prince of Dark Humor Kobal never forgave Lucifer for replacing him with Kronos and the joke was on the former Archangel of Light when Saminga killed him. Restored to his rightful place as advisor and speaker of puns to the King of Hell Kobal is currently enjoying the graveyard that mankind is swiftly becomming and is too wrapped up in himself to notice that the only reason Saminga prefers him over to Kronos is that the latter is still uncertain in his loyalties. Kobal on Saminga: Haahahaha...ohhh... Hehehe ohhhhh boy hahahaha Saminga on Kobal: If nothing else he serves as a fitting example of what place the other princes will have if they abandon Baal or their "neutrality" and join me. However I am tiring of his jests, perhaps I will feed him to Haagenti and see if it doesn't balance that prince back to normal. Luthienne, The Demon princess of Seduction In the words of Andrephalus "Da**!", Luthienne is Saminga's sole servitor that he has (thus far) promoted to the rank of Superior. A carnal being with her pale skin, white hair, and deep red eyes most of Hell wishes to be her lover and she is happy to oblige for a price. Devoted to the cause of getting mortals to embrace undeath and/or darkness for carnal or power reasons she is Saminga's foil to Andrephalus and a rival to both Beleth and Haphitas out of jealousy. Luthienne despises Haagenti but is smart enough to know that he is too powerful to challenge directly...others for her however... She is also curiously devoted to the impossible goal of corrupting a Malakite but since surrendering to Hell is a violation of their dissonance AND suffering an evil to live she figures getting one to love her and fall won't be that difficult. Luthienne on Saminga: My father wishes me to corrupt mortality, angels, and my fellow demons so he can destroy all life on Earth. Who am I to disobey? Especially when it's so much fun! Saminga on Luthinne: My perfect weapon for the modern nights. Set, Demon Prince of Lies It was Saminga's ultimate slap in the face of Lucifer and his brood that the Demon prince of Lies would not be a Balseraph or even a demon but an Ethereal who had long devoted himself to the very concept. Set the Prince of Lower Egypt now a Superior has since revived the Egyptian pantheon in a hideous mockery of it's previou self with such beings as Apep and Apophis now serving as his most powerful servitors. The Demon Prince covets Fufur's place as leader of the Hellish hosts and is maneuvering himself for the position even as he incrases his earthly power and makes inroads to pantheons Beleth was unable to touch. Set on Saminga: This is fine repayment for his debt...for now. Saminga on Set: He alone among my servants I respect. He saw through my facade and joined with my star...I will haveto destroy him soon. Kronos The Demon Prince of Fate remains uninvolved with Saminga and Baal's factions save for the traditional curtesies he extended them before. Kronos is a completely apolitical being and both factions do not want to tempt his ire as to upset him and perhaps sway the power balance in Hell. However given Hapithas is firmly in Saminga's camp it leads one to wonder exactly where the Prince of Fate is swinging..... Kronos on Saminga: He is beggining to reach his fate.... Saminga on Kronos: I half suspect we will merge into one entity as Death becomes the Fate of all. Vapula Saminga has not given up hope for Vapula to yet throw his lot in with his camp but currently Vapula remains apolitical as he defends his borders mercilessly and pounds any forces which try to come in from either camp with his soul-reaving engines of death. A number of the more scientiffic minded members of Baal's and Saminga's servitors (fearing now they were the target of faaaarrrr too much scrutiny) have joined with Vapula and the oppurtunity for experiments with the soul have never been better. He has even expanded his borders into the pounded wastes of Perdition. Vapula on Saminga: STUPID FOOL! He interrupts CENTURIES of research with his annoying civil war! *Sigh* get me undead! Lots of undead! As many as you can find and any demons from either side which come by...we have much work to do and very little time to do it. Saminga on Vapula: I am not a creature of the modern world...his "technology" will be of use however in the new order. - -Charlemagne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 15:53:41 +0800 From: Manny Nepomuceno Subject: IN> "Toughness"? And THUS it was that Beleth, Demon Princess of Nightmares, did awaken screaming for blood. The Fragments ("Fraggies, Fraggim") The Habbalite's whip lashed again against the struggling old man's back. "Obey me," the faux angel hissed. "Obey me, Vophsi." Sobbing, the old man slumped. "I am Vophsi," he whispered, defeated. The Habbalite smiled. "And now you are Shara March. You are a reporter. You are beautiful." Without a ripple in the Symphony, the old man's body flowed into a new shape: unwounded, beautiful, female... Fragments -- called "Fraggim" ("Fraggite" singular) by many -- are a minor Band, found almost exclusively in the service of Malphas, Prince of Factions. In the nastier rumors, they're what happens when you turn a Balseraph inside out -- instead of making other people believe _their_ truths, as the Liars do, Fragments fall under the sway of those who know their true names, believing, and making _real_ whatever they are told about themselves... Manner and Appearance A Fragment fledges -- or can be forced to fledge -- at a mere 5 Forces, instead of 7 (the limit for other Bands). Few of them ever get above 7 or 8 Forces, for various reasons. They're very gullible, no matter how many Ethereal Forces they have, and generally cowardly. (Unless told they are brave...) Celestially, Fraggim do lend credence to the "inside out Balseraph" theory - -- they are vaguely ameboid, blind, pallid worms. They have a mouth to speak with, and apparently hear just fine, but that's it. If you tell one that it's a member of another Band, it starts to adopt vague, pathetic elements of that Band. (Some say -- accurately, as it happens -- that a Fragment who spends too long pretending to be another Band will _turn into_ that Band. It's been known to happen, though most cases are suspected Interventions.) Corporeally, a Fraggite is whatever it's told to be. WHATEVER. Resonance Like the Serpents, a Fragment has a resonance for lies -- the lies told to _it_. It can't activate its resonance itself, though. That requires someone else, who knows its true name and can drag it back to some semblance of objective reality before plunging it into a delusion again. Game Mechanics First, you take your Fragment, and discover its true name. This usually requires being _told_ it -- either by the Fragment itself while its in Hell and before it's been used, or by the Friendly Prince, Malphas. Then you win a Contest of Wills with it. Torturing the Fragment subtracts from its Will -- the penalties are up to the GM. Finally, once it's admitted what it is, summoned to reality for a moment by its true name, you tell it what it's going to become. A Fragment is the only being who can effectively "create" a long-term Role. The Symphony treats it as having a Role of a level of the "handler's" successful Will roll, for purposes of disturbance. While paperwork is not affected, everyone who comes into contact with the en-Roled Fragment feels that they should treat it as what it is pretending to be. A Fragment who is a teacher can walk into the school it "teaches at," "remind" the (real) teacher that _this_ is _its_ class, and take over. (The Knowledge skill for the subject is even provided with the Role!) However, a Fragment in a Role is nearly as unaware of its true nature as a Remnant. When in the presence of celestials, it has appropriate instincts, and generally recognizes the being who gave it its last identity. But Songs and other supernatural abilities are usually out of the question unless the attunement works automatically (as the Factions Band Attunement for them does) or they're told they can use that ability as part of their identity briefing. Fraggies who are told that they are members of a Band do _not_ get that Band's resonance, unfortunately. Strikingly, Fragments do not appear to have a dissonance condition. It's not that it breaks them to "break Role," or not obey someone who has their true name, it's that they _can't_. To this extent, they lack free will. A Fragment _can_ be redeemed, though. Strangely, none have ever had more than 8 Forces afterward, and they redeem into... relievers. If left to fledge on their own, they often turn into Kyriotates; if given some guidance or fledged by the Archangel, they can be _anything_. Even Malakim. Factions' Band Attunement To better help Fragments in their work, Malphas grants them split personalities! When faced with a situation that the Role can't handle, the Fragment will switch to a personality which seems able to cope. They get three of them, with the Forces _moved around_ to emphasize that personality! For example, a 2/2/1 Fraggie, in its Role as Shara March, is confronted with a Malakite of Creation who takes exception to some of the stains upon "Shara's" honor. The Fragment shifts into its "corporeal combat" personality, and its very Forces shift to 3/1/1 to emphasize Strength and Agility. (The player decides how the moved Force will distribute itself between the characteristics.) When Shara's vessel is beaten to nigh-death, the "celestial combat" personality takes over, and the Fragment goes celestial, its Forces shifting to 1/1/3. (Having become highly damaged celestially, it then flees to its Heart...) (To be clear: each Fragment of Malphas has, potentially, 4 personalities. The main one is the Role one, and the other 3 are for combat, or other high-stress situations. It switches to one of the 3 sub-personalities when the player and/or GM think it appropriate.) - --emccoy@nh.ultranet.com // arcangel@io.com In Nomine Line Editor RPG links; Random name list, Art: http://www.io.com/~arcangel/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 10:59:07 -0500 From: Whistling in the Dark Subject: Re: IN> Another Insomnia Special...
