So the War kept grinding on, long after it *should* have ended. In an effort to break the stalemate, President Grant decided that the North *had* to gain control of the ghost rock which had been discovered in California after the Great Earthquake which turned California into the Maze. At his request, Congress passed the Transcontinental Railway Act, which granted a 10 year monopoly on government ghost rock shipments to the first company that could establish a continuous railway link across the continent from the Union to California. This monopoly would be worth billions. The Confederacy quickly reacted, by passing a similar law, and the race for California's riches was on, much to Mammon's delight! By 1870, there were only six companies still in the race. All the other competitors had been defeated or destroyed, sometimes by extreme violence. Bayou Vermilion was a New Orleans company owned by a somewhat mysterious Haitian named Baron Simon LaCroix. In fact, LaCroix was actually the Role of Nurbis, Habbalite Marquis of the Tuaut, The Demon of Mummification. Bayou Vermilion was able to compete in the race to California because of Saminga's support, and its extensive use of Zombie labor. The Black River Railway was owned by a extremely smart and ruthless woman named Mina Devlin. There were rumors that Devlin was a very powerful witch. Actually, Mina was the Role of Hatiphas, Demon of Sorcery, and Black River had the full backing of Kronos. Many of the Fate Demons in service to Hatiphas prefer female vessels, which was why Black River soon acquired a reputation for having the meanest women in the world working for it. Wasatch Railway was a fully owed subsidiary of Hellestromme Industries, which was owned by the famous mad scientist, Dr. Darius Hellestromme. Hellestromme was, of course, actually Vapula, so Wasatch was the most technologically advanced of the railways. It's rail lines were guarded by automatons, which were robot bodies with the brains of dead humans inside. The brains were reanimated by Vapula's Reanimation attunement. Iron Dragon was run by a Chinese warlord named Kang. Kang was actually a powerful Pagan Soldier and Sorcerer working for a group of Ethereals from China, Japan, and other Asian cultures. Kang had come to America with a dream...a dream of creating a criminal empire the likes of which the world had never seen before. Being a criminal genius, he managed to get some support from Valefor. Dixie Rails was partly owned by the Confederate government. General Robert E. Lee was its Chairman. It was able to survive in part because of the backing of the Confederacy, and in part because Heaven was trying hard to put the four railways already mentioned out of business. At first, Heaven didn't really object to Dixie Rails...until 1871, when a powerful Balseraph of Baal murdered President Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy, and successfully assumed his identity as President Davis of the Confederacy. Union Blue was run by Joshua Laurence Chamberlin, the hero of Gettysburg. Unfortunately, a few months after Gettysburg, Chamberlin slipped in the bathtub, and broke his skull. Chamberlin was replaced by a Kyriotate of Laurence who had formerly served Marc, and still had many of Marc's attunements. He was assisted in running the company by Vevaliah, who was Michael's Ofanite Angel of Supply Lines. Unlike the other companies involved in the Rail Wars, Union Blue was operated according to the highest ethical standards. In order to win the Rail War, one of these companies had to get a railroad to the Independant City of Lost Angels. Unfortunately, Los Angeles was a cannibalistic theocracy which was totally under the control of Reverend Grimme, the founder of the Church of Lost Angels. And Reverend Grimme was actually the Role of Beleth, who was determined that *nobody* should win the Rail Wars. The Rail Wars were a turning point in human history. Thousands of people died in them, and the conflict powerfully advanced Hell's agenda, by making it impossible for either the North or South to win the Civil War. So it is a painful irony that centuries later, in the period known as Deadland: Hell on Earth, after a nuclear war between the North and the South has destroyed most of the world, human historians won't even know which of the above companies actually won the Rail Wars. It seems that the surviving history books give conflicting answers, which is perhaps not surprising, considering how many Balseraphs are currently stationed on Earth. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 00:41:22 -0500 From: "Rolland Therrien" Subject: IN> IN Tarot Just an idea I had after checking out Pyramid Magazine's "Gurps Dramatic Card Play" article, and thought about Ken Hite's "Supressed Transmission" Tarot series, and I started to wonder: Wouldn't it be cool if there was an In Nomine Tarot? Here are some of the card ideas I had: 0-The Fool: Eli, in hobo's clothing, wandering around and looking up to Heaven, not noticing the dog-like Djinn pacing behind him, nor the ravine leading into a firepit opening in front of him. 1-The Magician: Yves sitting at his desk, holding up a wand-like paintbrush, which he just dipped into an ink-filled cup (Strangely resembling the Holy Grail), and preparing to write into an open book with a right-side up Pentacle on the cover, a sword-shaped letter opener laying in front of the book on the desk. 2-The High Priestess: Novalis, sitting in the middle of her beloved Garden, on what looks like a throne of living wood and vines, smiling warmly to the watcher as her Angels laugh and sing around her. 3-The Emperess: Blandine, standing on her balcony, the bright scene of Heaven seen from one side of the tower, the mist-filled valley of the Marches on the other. 4-The Emperor: Laurence in full military regalia, standing in attention in front of the Halls of Worship, his sword in hand, ready to defend Heaven. Two Wolf-like Cherubs kneel at his feet, looking west and east. 6-The Lovers: Andrealphus laying on a bed of fine silk cushions, watching a man and two women writhing in an embrace of pleasure and debauchery. 7-The Chariot: Janus, flying about on a whirlwind-shaped cloud, holding up a flaming sword, a wide grin on his face. 8-Strength: Michael, wrestling a large Djinn, holding open it's gaping maw and raising his other hand, holding a dagger in it as he intends to empale the demon on it. 9-The Hermit: Kronos, walking through his darkened archives, holding a red lantern in one hand and a black leathery book in the other. 10-The Wheel of Fortune: Nybbas, standing in front of a dark looking wheel, titled "Wheel of Agony", with a wide variety of tortures described on it. He holds a Damned Soul in front of it, and holds his arm up to the wheel, ready to make him spin for the audiance watching at home, as we see the whole scene through a television screen. 11-Justice: Dominic, standing in front of his Cathedral, holding different books and scrolls of law in one hand, and a scale in the other, holding the image of Angels on one plate, and Demons on the other. You can see him frown as he looks at the Balance, which seems to lean more towards the Demonic side. 12-The Hanged Man: Valefor, smiling even as he's being hung upside down over a vat of molten lava by a troop of Demons of The Game. He's already undone the chains binding his arms and freed his left leg, crossing it in a reversed 4 behind his four leg, a blade stricking out from the toe. His wild grin seems to resemble Janus' own. 13-Death: Saminga as a towering lich, dressed in long black robes, holding up a dark scythe with a silver blade, his eyes glowing with a dark green glow. He walks through Sheol, amongst the forests of empaled victims and fields of half-buried dead. These were the only ones I could think of so far. I had thought of Gabriel for the Hierophant, but she works equally well for the Sun. Any ideas for the rest of the major Arcana? - -Exit the LoneWolf ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 22:04:42 -0800 (PST) From: Maurice Lane Subject: IN> March 9, 2001 (ML) Some people get to use their weekends to catch up. I don't. :) Moe Mom has a little job for you. Andrealphus can be a bit of a pain, sometimes. Sad to say it, but it's true. He also can be very, very tiresome, what with not getting the point, trying to corrupt humanity, and not respecting one's personal space (of course, the Prince of Lust would reply that he respects personal space very much, indeed). Case in point: it would seem that he's told his Servitors to meddle with that fun Hindu holiday of Holi. It's supposed to be a chance for everybody to run around, have fun, and let go of some of their inhibitions in a safe manner, but Andre wants to push that last bit until he's got mass orgies going off in the streets. Not that there's anything wrong with that sort of thing, in moderation, but the humans involved won’t exactly be doing it in their right minds, won't they? Why, yes, this _would_ be normally an issue for the Hindu pantheon. Kind of rude to hide behind a technicality, though: Heaven is supposed to be opposing all evil, after all, not just the evil that sprouts up in areas that are unambiguously the responsibility of the Host. Besides, she's sure that the Hindu gods won't mind: she’ll drop them a note and let them know that the angels are coming to help out. Never you mind how. Archangels have their ways, dear. So, once the Servitors of Flowers (and anyone else in the area when Novalis dropped by, of course) get to where they go, of course they'll be expected to keep a lid on the problem. For the most part, it'll involve running around, trying to sniff out demonic interference, then putting the kibosh on it. Of course, they might have problems with some of the Hindu ethereal spirits, but Novalis is sure that the PCs won't do anything to embarrass either her or Heaven. What? Will this be a cause for necessary violence? Surely such desperate measures aren't really called for in this case? After all, the Servitors of Lust are merely trying to get a lot of unplanned (and unwelcome) sexual activity going. Stopping that sort of thing doesn't require flaming swords: just water balloons. Properly timed, it's an effective deterrent. In fact, Novalis is going to have to insist that the PCs (yes, even the ones that don't serve her) not use anything else, unless it's a matter of life and soul-death. The PCs, if smart, won't argue: those serving Archangels friendly to Flowers will find that their Superiors are humoring Novalis, and those who aren't are better off not reminding their bosses about the PCs unfortunate taste in friends. Oh, yes: even if they have to defend themselves, the PCs should really avoid soul-killing the poor unfortunate demons. Try talking to them, instead. It's good practice. Never you mind why. Mom has her reasons, dear. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 03/04/01(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Odd, that. Moe Lake of the Forty Martyrs (Stone) In the fourth century AD, a group of Christian soldiers were ordered to repudiate their faith as part of the political maneuverings going on at the time. When they refused, they were stripped of their clothes and forced to stand in the middle of a frozen lake (near Sivas, in Turkey). Despite threats and temptations, thirty-nine of the forty soldiers stood firm: when the fortieth recanted, one of the guards took his place, in order to show his respect for the Christians' piety and determination. Heaven gained forty martyrs - and a Tether to Stone. The Tether still exists (in the middle of the lake, which makes it a little hard to access in the summertime): possibly because it isn't used too often, it remains fairly quiet to use. The Seneschal of the Tether is Quintus, a Saint of David (and the guard who joined the Christians waiting for their death): he took over the position after a few centuries (the old Seneschal simply wasn't working out). Celestials seeking to lose dissonance can usually work it off by maintaining the modest shrine found there. Quintus, Saint of David My, was Quintus surprised when he ended up in Heaven: it seemed that those Christians were right, all along - - or at least closer to right than he was. Still, David was very happy to see him, and after a few centuries looking around bemusedly, the blessed soul was ready to serve David in the corporeal world again. The Saint is, oddly enough, still half-pagan: he spends his free time going through history texts to determine which Archangel was behind which Greek or Roman myth (he's pretty sure that Novalis was Ceres: David, of course, was behind the legend of Atlas). He also sometimes forgets and swears by Zeus. As a human, Quintus is merely Attuned to the Tether, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. The site is pretty much out of the way, from the War's point of view. Lake of the Forty Martyrs' Tether: Average (9 Word-Forces, standard Flow, Celestial Harbor, Quiet). ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 03/04/01(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Of course, that would > mean recognizability problems, since, tmk, there's never been a picture > of Michelle. Well, reversing it (the lion being a lioness, with Michael as described) has some appeal. On the other hand, it wouldn't be that difficult to make a recognizable Michelle - Michael is portrayed in the IN core book as a grey-haired, pony-tailed Old Soldier type wielding a bloody battle-axe - - surely doing a feminine version of Michael that would be recognizable wouldn't be that difficult. David wouldn't be a bad pick for Strength either. Perhaps a picture stone lion and Michelle would make for a nicely skewed take on things. As for the rest... hmm... no idea on Temperance. The Devil is one of those obvious ones, although Kronos is possible if we want to get all subtle. The Tower... I would have a split-image, with Blandine and Beleth's Towers as each half, forming one "tower". The only other one I have an idea for off-hand is Jordi for The World; four heads of different animals (an ape or monkey replacing the human head) and the Kyrioate "blob" as the central figure. - --- damienw[et]juno.com "To kill a man between panels is to condemn him to a thousand deaths." - Scott McCloud ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
