Angel of Troubadours: By spending 2 Essence, Carlos
can inspire anyone in love with another to reveal that
in song (if the GM must roll, treat the target as
suddenly having a Singing skill of 4). Carlos gains 2
Essence whenever someone sings a genuinely felt love
song without his interference.
Don't let the current translation of his Word fool
you. Carlos is quite busy in the modern era. His
Word covers every single person who ever sang of the
love of another, whether it was accompanied by a lute
or a steel guitar. Carlos got his Word from watching
over the court of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine,
fostering the musicians - and the ideals of courtly
love - there. Since then, he's watched over some of
the greatest singers in history.
It's almost as if there are two Carlos living in the
same body. One is legendary in Heaven for his love
affairs: like his earthly counterparts, Carlos adores
chastely from afar (often for decades), pouring out
his soul and talent to praise and exalt his
inspiration. Those so chosen for this honor - and a
deeply sought-for honor it was - were often those
whose worth and merit were overlooked, until Carlos'
music instructed the less discerning to see what was
there all along.
He has chosen not to reveal the name of his latest
love (he only calls her the Discerning Lady, which
sounds better in Angelic and at least confirms the
gender), which has led to lively speculation. It is
said that, when in the throes of his perfect passion,
he can make Elohim weep and Ofanim stand still without
dissonance.
This makes the other Carlos so confusing. When on
earth, sooner or later Carlos becomes somewhat more
exuberant. This means that he drinks like a fish,
starts parties, revels and brawls for fun, fornicates
in numbers noted for both quality and quantity, and
generally acts in a manner guaranteed to make the
Inquisition foam at the mouth. His corporeal music is
rowdy, rude, boisterous ... and literally Divine. All
in all, he was the sort of angel that the Archangel of
Creation felt great glee in protecting.
How he ended up in service to the Sword is thus a bit
of a mystery. Eli had barely left the Cathedral
before Laurence immediately swooped down and snapped
him up for his organization. In marked contrast to
most Creationers, Carlos has been since rewarded well
for his talents: he's become the unofficial bard for
Laurence's organization, commemorating their victories
and most outstanding Servitors. His less than pure
antics are amazingly well tolerated - even condoned.
Paladins do appreciate the bards that sing of them ...
and realize that they are not subject to quite the
same strictures.
Still, the fact that the Inquisition has ignored all
but his most outrageous stunts (which, admittedly,
have toned down, slightly, over the last few years) is
amazing. It is suggested that Laurence's patronage
shields him, which answers one question but raises
another. Laurence not only tolerates his antics, but
also has recently included him in the highest of his
councils. This obvious sign of trust confuses many:
what could persuade Heaven's Most Perfect Knight to
listen with such friendly attentiveness to such a
rakish, worldly angel?
Possibly Carlos' hidden love has pleaded for his
protection. If so, she must be judged powerful
indeed, to be able to sway an Archangel.
