Among other things, the Tree of Life and Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil are neither one mentioned in the APG, where Lilith, Adam, and Eve's creation are mentioned. The "snake in the garden" was Ophis, who told Adam and Eve about the world of Nasty, Brutish, and Short humans outside the garden -- thus tainting the experiment. Were the pair getting along because they were capable of getting along and not being selfish twits, or were they getting along so that they wouldn't be kicked out or punished? (Though perhaps Ophis (well, it's presumed to be Ophis, anyway) went and told Eve, who didn't hold her hands over her ears and go LA LA LA LA loudly enough, and then, instead of keeping it to herself (which might have had interesting things to say about her, in complex ways), went and told Adam what she'd heard...) Mind, the Flood hasn't appeared in IN canon, so it's really going to depend on whether it comes in useful (in which case it's likely to be tied to some historical flood, or so I think at this time, or else a flood which would be historical in the IN universe) or not (in which case, it won't appear)... It's not really CDaU, but it is a bit of DaU at this time. - --emccoy@nh.ultranet.com // arcangel@io.com In Nomine Line Editor RPG links; Random name list, Art: http://www.io.com/~arcangel/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 10:36:48 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Lilith's Body At 10:56 AM +1000 6/26/02, james walker wrote: >Or - and this is an option I've been mulling over for sometime - she's >actually possessed by a very unhappy WordBound Shedite. > >[...] It can't leave, either, as leaving a host is a resonance >roll, so it's penalised by the dissonance and any Bound Discord it's picked >up. Maybe the Shedite can use them up by binding human-Forces into Lilim along with one of its Word-Forces, and _that's_ why no one else manages to make them. The only problem shows up when you postulate that this hybrid creature would have to be Superior-level (for the shielding, so that the Archangels don't find out and start denouncing it for whatever tactical advantage they might get), and then one wonders how a Prince-level Shedite gets stuck doing this. Or, rather, Princess-level -- undoubtedly it would have wanted to get the Ethereal Forces of its first ride added to it, for better impersonation. Though, if it's riding a human of its choosing whenever it wants, that works out... (Clearly the Lilim repugnance towards Shedim would be a racial "subconscious memory," a glimpse of something icky, drippy, and cruel, just before their creation... This would likely result in a lot of them trying to defect or run, if the truth were revealed. Subject: Re: IN> Lilith's Body >> And let's not forget the Lilim Band resonance. The >> Shedite can't provide >> it, he's not a Lilim. And if Lilith is just a >> 15-Force human... humans >> don't *have* Band resonances. Okay, yet another of my ideas on Lilith. First and most important note...Lilim *don't have Band dissonance*. Really, look at them. They get dissonant if they fail to serve an active Geas (but so does everyone else), or if their invocation of a Geas fails (but since they're the only ones who *can* invoke Geases - and fail - we don't know what'd happen if someone *else* tried and failed.) So these are part of the mechanics of Geases, we'll assume. Now, Geases are usually magic bonds, in non-IN settings. I'm thinking especially of WoD here - Mage and Changeling both make mention of Geases, either self-inflicted or outside-inflicted. (Mage also has an interesting idea about how a reincarnation is responsible for fulfilling Geases from his *previous* incarnation... but I digress.) We know Lilith can inflict Geases. We know there's something *different* about Lilim, if only because they don't change much when Redeeming and don't have Band/Choir dissonance. (Which means, of course, that Geas-free Bright Lilim of Creation are *scary*.) And we also know that Lilith is a Sorceress. In a nutshell, the whole Need-read/Geas thing is a Sorcerer's trick. A very *difficult* one that almost no Sorcerer knows (because Lilith makes *sure* they don't), but a Sorcerous ability nonetheless, that can also be 'projected' - with effort. Which explains why she can do it and no other Superior (not even Kronos and his Bal Attunement; we'll ignore Yves and his Master Distinction for the moment) can. And also why she takes so *many* Geases on Frees - it's a *lot* of effort to bind the ability in permanantly. Which raises the question, could Lilith give the ability to a member of another Band (or Choir)? Well, probably, if she wanted to... and it'd be *neat* to see the look on Dominic's face if a Malakite turned up with the Lilim 'resonance'... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 11:12:06 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> [ADMIN] Klez Commentary... What if, in times long past, the Archangels and Demon Princes were not only known to humanity at large, but were actively worshipped (by some), as Gods? They hand out spells to their chosen mortal servants, but only a special few get to become soldiers, and therefore have access to songs. Angels and Demons still walk the earth, helping or hindering the mortal works, for inscrutable purposes (or in the case of Seraphim of Jordi, inscrutable porpoises). Okay, so my challenge here (self imposed) is to design a cosmology which is consistent with both the rules of D&D 3e, and In Nomine Canon, with as little hand waving as possible. Yes, i know, Magic, as such, does not work in In Nomine, and a world without both 'divine' (clerical) and 'arcane' (wizards) magic is no fun at all in D&D. So? How about making the arbitrary statement that just because magic does not work in the modern world does not intrinsically mean it never did. Whose to say that the great crusade of Uriel not only destroyed the creatures of myth from the earth, but he destroyed the source of magic was a source of power as well? Basically, he did something that caused Magic to stop functioning (and, just for the plot seed value, maybe it is something that can be undone, causing the return of Magic to this world... D20 IN / Technomancer crossover, anyone? Another project, for another day, perhaps). That does not fly in the face of established canon, does it? So. You have Angels, in Heaven. You have Demons, in Hell. You have an abundance of servitors, in heaven, hell and on earth. You have mortals, fighters and rouges and clerics and wizards, wandering around, slaying the occasional dragon (or feeding it, as the case may be). What we need here, are Pagan Gods, and pantheons, actively working from the Ethereal realm. Since this is set before the Crusade or Uriel (and I would really love to find a way to have that coincide with a huge invasion of Mongols, just because I find that cool. But unless i am mistaken, that is historically off by several hundred years). Oh, and let us take note of one thing... Since the mechanics use a d20 rather than d666, Interventions will be less common... figure a Divine intervention occurs on a natural 20, and and Infernal intervention occurs on a natural 1, there is only a 1/20 chance to get an intervention. With d666, the chances are significantly lower, being 1/216. This implies a much more active role of God and Lucifer in the daily lives of mortals. Considering the presence of Magic, monsters, and other seriously fantastic elements in daily life, this is not, intrinsically an unreasonable thing. So. This is my project of the moment. True enough. But they might not be able to stop it, especially if it goes down as quickly as Nybbas hopes. (They couldn't stop TV when it first came out, probably because humans latched onto it so fiercely. Seriously, if you could buy something that let you dream whatever you wanted all the time, wouldn't you want it?) Nybbas can muster quite a bit of support for something like this. For starters, all he has to do is mention the possibilities of Dreamatic PsychoMentalist Control Devices to Vapula and he'll get the Genius Prince onboard. Andre will come along quickly enough, as Beth pointed out. Mammon might be convinced to join up to promote the sale of Dream TV. And, for big time support, Kronos could probably be convinced that robbing humans of their imagination while they're asleep is likely to draw more humans toward their Fate than nightly terror (terror often tends to make humans want to fight back; TV makes them complacent). As for the other Princes, no one is going to help Beleth. She might scream at Asmodeus, but he is unlikely to act if Kronos is behind the project. Malphas might do something, but it's unlikely that it would benefit Beleth in the long run. Kobal might do something as well, but he's an Impudite like Nybbas, and Beleth has no sense of humor. The other Princes could be encouraged to do nothing if Nybbas implies that _his_ Marches would be more accessible to the rest of Hell. Heck, he could set up Dream channels expressly devoted to promoting the Words of each Demon Prince if he needed to bribe them further (although I'm not sure a lot of people would watch Saminga's ZombiVision...) And let's not forget how much Lucifer liked the first TV Nybbas came up with... The reality is: Beleth has been standing alone for a long time. She's survived because she had monopolies on half the Marches and the ethereals, but once Nybbas breaks those monopolies, she's going to look more and more like she's on the way down. For irony, you could have her have to reach out to Blandine if she wants to hold on to her power base (Redemption possibilities?) All in all, I'm not sure Jean's people (by themselves) will have the resources to stop Dream TV once the avalanche is in motion. Their dissonace conditions just say they have to try; if they fail to stop it it's not dissonant, just upseting. Blandine, however, will be gunning for Nybbas like nobody's business; Dream TV steals people's ability to Dream, and thus attacks her Word directly. If Nybbas succeeds on the scale that he hopes to, Blandine (and Beleth) is going to be hurting bad. As a plot for a campaign, you can insert your PC's in the time frame where Nybbas is gathering his ethereal contingent, getting the Media to hype up a 'revolutionary entertainment experience about to be released' and still conducting tests in the Far Marches. This gets them time to find out what's going on and decide what to do about it. If they act quickly, they might be able to organize an effort to shut the project down (or get in on Nybbas's good side and ride the wave). Ryan R. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 02:41:56 +0800 From: Manny Nepomuceno Subject: IN> Demon Hunting II and III: Demon Hunters and the Convention Hey, Here's the second of five parts (four of which have already been written): ;) Manny Neps http://www.geocities.com/angeloffools II: Demon Hunters The traditional image of the demon hunter is that of a lone wolf, moving from hamlet to hamlet in search of evil to slay. Most modern-day hunters follow this trend, preferring to take on the risks of demon-hunting alone. Yet others prefer to bring along friends on their expeditions, and still others band together with fellow hunters to bring down their prey. These "packs", as they have come to be known, are rarely formal affiliations (with a few exceptions) but are fairly common among the lesser-known demon hunters serving Heaven. While hunters come from diverse backgrounds, the average hunter tends to be Caucasian, male, of above-average intelligence, and with some military training. Most veteran hunters are overachievers, obsessive-compulsive, and paranoid -- survival traits which serve them well on the front lines of the War. While many Soldiers of God carry Demon Hunter Licenses, few of them actually work as solos or even pack hunters, having more to do with the angelic bureaucracy and organization. As a result, the average hunter tends to have only five Forces -- a shortcoming compensated for in good measure by a decent sniper rifle and a healthy dose of booby traps. Almost all demon hunters operate in their country of origin, are single (or divorced, or widowed, as the case may be) and are between the ages of twenty to forty. Still, there are exceptions. While no demon hunter has yet lived beyond the age of forty, a few have come close. A fair number of hunters are women, not a few of whom have managed to distinguish themselves in hunter lore. Trinity Investigations, a small private-investigation company with headquarters in Utah, is made up of three female hunters who are well-known in celestial circles. A few even use their real names while hunting -- Caleb Baker, known as 'The Preacher Man', was a well-known televangelist before he turned to demon hunting. Many have criminal records as well. In a very few cases, hunters are even Hellsworn turning against their former masters. The famed Chinese hunter, Mei Li, is known to be a mummy who rebelled against Saminga. Such hunters are rarely trusted; other hunters may even take it upon themselves to rid the world of such creatures. Seniority among hunters is determined by two things -- kills and 'renews'. Most hunters keep a record of their kills, and not a few are compulsive diarists. Renews, on the other hand, refers to the number of times that the Demon Hunter's License has been renewed -- the current record is three renews, although four hunters are currently in the second year of their third renew. Officially, emphasis is placed on renews, since they symbolize a willingness on the hunter's part to maintain contact with Heaven; unofficially, especially among hunters, kills are given more emphasis. Visits to angelic Tethers by hunters are infrequent at best, but are amply rewarded by the Tethers' Seneschals. In an effort to keep these hunters in line, Archangels Laurence and Michael have issued standing orders to provide preferential treatment to these mortal ronin. Hunters visiting Tethers are often given briefings of infernal activities in the area, access to the Tether's armory (mundane weapons only), and offers of training, food and shelter. The hunter is not, however, briefed about angelic forces in the area, or may even be misled about Heaven's projects - -- all it would take, after all, is possession by a Shedite for the hunter to give up this information. In exchange, an accounting of his activities is requested, with copies made for Heaven's files. III.The Convention In an effort to entice and keep hunters in the program, the Archangel of Trade proposed a yearly convention, similar in nature to the 8th Virtue of the Malakim. Held in the same convention hall every year, the World-Wide Warrior's Convention, as it has come to be known, is staffed almost exclusively by Malakim of Trade, the Sword, and War, and is often referred to as "The 9th Virtue" in angelic circles. Every demon hunter worth his salt makes an effort to be there for the convention, although hunters who operate in foreign climes often rely on angelic resources to attend. Defense contractors and weapon manufacturers are often invited to present their latest products at the convention. Many do, attracting more than just demon hunters. As a result, the first two days of the convention are open to all comers -- the better to turn a profit, as Marc likes to say. The third and fourth days, however, are by invitation only. On the third day of the Convention, the mundane presenters are quietly ushered out, and the angels of Lightning are brought in to show off their latest projects. While the average demon hunter will not be able to take advantage of a Holy Hand Grenade (such things needing at least a sixth Force), he will certainly be able to appreciate the next generation of plastic explosive. Michael's and Laurence's best teachers are also on hand to provide training for hunters seeking to hone their skills, while panel discussions provide new insights into the best way to kill infernals. These discussions continue into the fourth day, at the end of which everyone returns to work. (Some time ago, some angels of Flowers and Creation tried to set up a post-Convention celebration. Few hunters showed up, and subsequent parties were similarly ill-attended.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 15:43:45 -0400 From: EDG Subject: IN> Oannes's Attunements (Revised) Revised to reflect commentary. - -EDG CHOIR ATTUNEMENTS Seraphim: Seraphim of the Waters understand that the truth can be fluid, and have learned to adapt to it: they add their Celestial Forces to the check digit of a successful resonance roll, and *subtract* them from the CD of a failed roll (minimum 1). (This would not change in a modern game.) Cherubim (partially restricted): Cherubim of the Waters embody the yielding nature of water, flowing around anything that tries to displace them. The Power of any attack against one of these Cherubim or anybody to whom they are attuned is reduced by the Cherub's Celestial Forces, regardless of whether the target of the attack knows that he is being attacked. (This would not change in a modern game.) Ofanim (restricted): An Ofanite serving Oannes can channel the power of flash-floods. He can use the third facet of his resonance (that of exceptional speed) without actually moving for up to a number of rounds equal to his total Forces. Each round that he does this adds the check digit of the successful roll; the round after he stops, he can move up to the accumulated check digit in miles in the span of a single minute (without having to roll his resonance again), so long as he is in celestial form. (An unsuccessful resonance roll anywhere in the process stops it dead; the Ofanite must start over.) Every minute that he wishes to continue at this speed, he must roll his resonance per usual, subtracting (7 - the check digit) from his speed every round until the speed falls below his normal maximum. (This would not change in a modern game.) Elohim (partially restricted): Elohim of the Waters are attuned to water in all its forms. They always know the distance and location of any bodies of water within (Perception) miles - including non-liquid forms - and add their Celestial Forces to any resonance roll targeting someone who is touching water in any way (again, including non-liquid forms). (Someone drinking water is a valid target for this attunement; once the water leaves the mouth, however, that water ceases to grant any bonus.) (In a modern game, an Elohite of the Waters would also know the location of the nearest vacuum, and would have the bonus for anyone surrounded by vacuum - as in a space suit.) Malakim (restricted): Malakim are Oannes's riptides, dragging under the wicked and evil. A Malakite of the Waters can tell at a glance whether a person is more vicious than virtuous - although he will not know the exact circumstances - and how far to either side that person is, relative to the person's own moral standards. After the Malakite successfully resonates upon a vicious person (as detected above), he may add the check digit of the resonance roll to either the Power or the Accuracy of any melee attack he makes against the target. (This would not change in a modern game.) Kyriotates (restricted): A Kyriotate serving Oannes can create liquid vessels of their own. This requires a number of Forces equal to the amount the Kyriotate would normally have to spend in order to possess a creature of equivalent size, and must be done within (Celestial Forces) yards of an existing body of water, but the Kyriotate does not need to roll to create the vessel. The watery vessel can be dismissed at any time; doing so causes it to turn to steam, and then dissipate over the next few rounds. (This would not change in a modern game.) Mercurians: Mercurians of the Waters are charged with helping the sailors of the world. They get 12 extra character points to spend on a Role (or skills for that Role), which must be associated with sailing in some way (Sailing, Artistry: Cartography, et cetera). The Role may be enhanced by the angel's own character points, as normal. If the Role is ever lost for any reason, this attunement is lost as well. This attunement may be bought more than once, although the points must go toward a new Role. (In a modern game, this would be amended so that the Role could involve helping astronauts/spacers as well.) SERVITOR ATTUNEMENTS Amphibian: An angel with this attunement becomes amphibious. He can breathe water as though it were air, and suffers no movement penalties underwater. Effectively, the angel behaves as though the water were not even there, although sound and electricity still affect him normally, and the pressure of the deep is not alleviated. This also grants the Amphibian the ability to breathe in a vacuum, as though the angel had a normal air supply, although it does not grant protection from any other aspect of the vacuum (cold, pressure, etc.). Current: This attunement allows exceptionally fast movement underwater: multiply the angel's standard movement rate by his Celestial Forces while fully submerged. This bonus is negated if any part of the angel's body leaves the water. Conductor: Angels with this attunement do not take damage from electricity; rather, they conduct it. These angels can absorb any amount of electrical charge from any source and redirect it to another target, which he must touch in order to discharge the electricity. He must spend 1 Essence for every round after the first that he wants to keep the charge; if the charge is still around when he runs out of Essence or stops spending, it dissipates harmlessly into the environment. A Kyriotate of the Waters in his liquid vessel has twice as long to discharge any electricity he absorbs. Airless: This attunement allows an angel to create a vacuum in a sphere with a radius of (Total Forces) yards. The vacuum is created in an instant, and is not maintained: any surrounding air will immediately push back into the space, creating a sonic boom and dealing 1d damage to anyone within the radius except the angel using the attunement. In addition, everyone within (2 * total Forces) yards must make a Strength check or be deafened for a number of rounds equal to the check digit of the failed roll. (This also does not include the angel using the attunement.) DISTINCTIONS Vassal of the Waters: These angels are unaffected by environmental pressure (such as the deep oceans or the vacuum of space). They act in such environments as though the pressure were 1 standard atmosphere, and as though the surroundings were room temperature, although the Distinction does not grant immunity to asphyxiation or drowning. Friend of Fluids: A Friend of Fluids may command liquids and semi-liquids; by spending 1 Essence per round, he can get a number of gallons of fluid equal to his total Forces to follow his instructions to the letter. It is possible for a Friend of Fluids to get a gallon of water to flow uphill, or to float in midair, although lifting an object requires the Friend to roll Strength. Master of the Ocean Deep: Water is everywhere, whether in particles or oceans, and Masters of the Ocean Deep use this to their advantage. They *triple* their Perception when listening for Disturbances, thanks to the sound-conducting water in the atmosphere, and they do not need to touch their target when using the Conductor attunement, as long as that target is within their line of sight. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 13:04:41 -0700 From: Cameron McCurry Subject: Re: IN> A plot seed offering On Wed, 26 Jun 2002 14:36:02 -0400 (EDT) Ryan M Roth said unto us: >>All in all, I'm not sure Jean's people (by themselves) will have the resources to stop Dream TV once the avalanche is in motion. It's more than Beth allows, and I'm only about halfway through the AAs. Course it could be cut down a lot because I really don't need all the back ground info that IN people know but the local D20 group needed explained to them. The ability to create in that manner is a little gift one gets from being created in the image of God. Yves is aware of this, of course, and so probably is Eli. The revelation shattered Gabriel's mind, poor thing. But in Hell, nobody knows this great secret except Lilith and maybe Lucifer. The real threat is Litheroy; he doesn't know yet, but when he finds out, he's going to tell humanity sooner or later. That's when things will really get interesting. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Be aware that most people are operating on a highly condensed version of the 10 Commandments... the part about murder." -- Mark Bricklin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Both myself and my players found that they certainly served to speed up combat, but still left them feeling that combat was still long enough to allow them time to consider escape and doing daringly stupid things. Anyway, I invite other to playtest the rules mods I've posted and I'm open to scathing criticism as well as glowing praise. Here's the webpage: http://www.geocities.com/perrylloyd/tabletop/ideal.html the specific changes to vessels and hit points is under Mechanics http://www.geocities.com/perrylloyd/tabletop/ideal.html#mechanics I haven't yet playtested the rules for using Essence as character points, so if anyone feels like doing that and telling us about it, that'd be super. - -Perry perrylloyd@hotmail.com pl312993@oak.cats.ohiou.edu http://www.geocities.com/perrylloyd/ "And that's the hardest thing for a human being to do - be wrong. I can see this one turning around and biting the Ethereals -- unless the shows that they mimic are close to the Ethereals' original concept, they still face identity death. BTW, one group of Ethereals -- the August Prosperity Collective -- already has a canonical arrangement with Nybbas (at least, they do if the EPG didn't torpedo it). That's the IN explanation for why there are so many anime and sentai shows on American TV. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Be aware that most people are operating on a highly condensed version of the 10 Commandments... the part about murder." -- Mark Bricklin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
